    Default Where have they gone?

    Hi Guys.

I have something on my mind which I've finally decided to ask.

Looking through forums, you see some really good questions and good answers at the same time, debates that go with them as well.

But you also see questions like "where is my oil filter?" or "what does my alternator do?"....random stuff like that.

Question is, what did we do before forums? I know myself when I was younger, I either went ahead with what I thought was the right thing at the time or asked an uncle or neighbour. Where have these people gone? Are we too scared to socialise? or is it that we're too scared to ask someone in real life for fear of 'making a fool out of yourself' asking a question, the answer of which is possibly blatantly obvious to everyone else?

    just seems odd to me.

I wouldn't touch **** on my car without asking first... Purely because if I break it, I can't get to work. I don't have any other way to get to work, and I'm not exactly the most experienced in automotive mechanics I'd ask in person if it were faster then asking here lol.

I always ask friends etc first, rarely rely on the net unless it is a last resort.

I figure it would be better asking here as there's other people who own the same car as me. We've got a few mechanics in the family, but I'd still rather ask on here.

I guess one real benefit would be that u have a hard copy pretty much. You ring someone and they tell ya something and when ya hang up ya gotta hope u remember (unless u wrote notes). On here u can go through it, ask more questions if necessary, print out instructions. And diagrams and images can be shared to further improve the instructions.

What's the point in having a forum full of helpful people if nobody asks for help?

I used to go to the library and photocopy pages out of workshop manuals
or ask my brother/dad (I still do!)

I rarely ask on forums as you get 20 replies, 18 of which are useless/untrue - and 2 of which are spot on, but they both differ in opinion haha

But I find the internet a great resource to work out how systems work, etc etc.

for e.g. last night I learnt all about grades of bolts, the markings on their heads, tensile strength etc..... in 10 minutes - as opposed to asking someone and not getting any diagrams/pictures, tables of info etc.

If I need to ask I have a certain group of specialists on here I like to ask. Now that I have my gregories I consult that first. I don't have anyone that I know IRL that can help really. So its either the gregories or the internets.

I got the GMH VL book, it has 7 volumes. All up it's about 570mb so would take a while to upload. I got the Gregories VN book which is 75mb.

Here's a list of the Commodore manuals I have...

    VB-VK (Max Ellery)
    VC (Gregories)
    VK (Gregories)
    VL - (GMH Book)
    VN (Gregories)
    VP (Gregories)
    VR (Gregories)
    VS (Gregories)
VT (Not sure who brought this one out)
VT-VX (not sure about this book either)
VT - VY (Possibly Gregories or Max Ellery)

I have thought about sharing them on here but I don't wanna upload them to a free server, and having them on my own server might not be a wise idea. The books have had all the owners names removed from what I can see(ie, Gregories), but it's still a bit risky.

Maybe I'll just upload them in a rar file which is password protected, and just put the password on here. Maybe I could put them in a section for donating members lol. Then it would be even more safer. As most of u know I've been in a bit of trouble lately, so I'd be worried about some members maybe 'dobbing' me in to the books authors or sumfin just coz they think I'm a nob.

Or I could just upload them to a free server and not have to worry about anything.
