How to spot a fake $50 bill
Police say counterfeiters are targeting the busy pre-Christmas shopping period with a flood of fake $50 bills - here's how to spot one.
Police today warned people to watch for the fake paper bills during the Christmas shopping rush.
Acting Sergeant Joe Logan said the notes were high-quality counterfeits and 10 had been used at the South Melbourne Market and local supermarkets since July.
Acting Sergeant Logan told Radio 3AW the forgeries had also been found in Richmond and Frankston.
"They're spreading them around all over the place," he said.
The notes are made from paper and are believed to be double-sided photocopies.
"It's pretty good. The colour is good, the printing definition is quite good, it's not as accurate as a real note but just to the naked eye and a quick glance it's pretty good," Acting Sergeant Logan said.
Scrunching or tearing the notes will quickly reveal if they are made of paper unlike Australia's genuine currency.
"It's not really very, very difficult but the problem is that ... when you take one over the counter in a hurry and you don't look at it, except maybe to recognise it by colour, then it goes straight into the till so you don't really handle it properly and you don't get a chance to examine it," he said.
Acting Sergeant Logan warned shoppers and retail staff to be vigilant over the Christmas shopping period when handling notes.
If given a fake note, the forgery should be handed it to the local police station along with a description of the person who had used the note, he said.
The person would lose the money but if they passed on a counterfeit note they would be committing a crime.
Another way to spot a fake note, if you have possession of a UV/black light, shine it onto the note and the numbers on the bottom should turn white like in the picture bellow
OR, if you don't have a UV/black light then place the note up to some light (sun, light globe, torch etc etc) and you should see the Australian emblem.
be careful people, hope you don't come into any of these notes
So to sum it up (These tests work for any note denomination):
- The fakes are made of paper, and scrunch up, where as real ones are made of paper and keep their original form if scrunched.
- The fakes tear where as the the real ones don't
- Shining a UV/black light onto the real notes will turn the numbers on the bottom white.
- Putting a real note unto the light will reveal the Australian emblem

Nice post: ) In most countries everytime you hand a note over it will be inspected by the person in the shop. It was nice to not have the problem here, but the dodgies allways take over in the end![]()
If you realise it's fake, spend it quickly, or ask a service station attendant if you can swap it for two $20 dollar notes and a $10 dollar note
If you get paid via work with a fake $50 note, accuse your boss of ripping you off and paying you for your hard work with fake notes and demand he pay 50% interest on that fake $50.
I read in the paper that the real ones can be scrunched up and will go back into shape, but the fakies tend to stay deformed.
A few years ago when I worked in a supermarket we had a bunch of fakes come through town. We had to rub somewhere (i forget where) on every $50 that came in and see if we could make the ink fade
Apparently australian currency is one of the hardest to counterfeit because it has so many security measures in it

well i have heard about fake notes being used in sawyers valley wa, problem was that the bar owner got suspisous and recorded the cars liecence plate
OK, i work in retail and never once missed a fake note. I dont check with UV or the watermark. Well, i've never had to anyways. As your counting if you count by rubbing your finger over the middle section you'll actually notice that the ink is raised off the note and provides a rougher feel. That's very hard to replicate, especially with a photocopier. If your a bit iffy look at the clear window and it should have the demonation raised on BOTH sides and not just one.
Also, dont trust the UV test, there are a lot of older notes out there that the UV ink has rubbed off and wont show the denomination (there is the denomination on $20 and up notes just above the clear window that reacts to UV) and sometimes the ink on the serial numbers rubs off too.
Another thing is the 7 pointed star, when you look through the note you should see all 7 points, but when looking just at it without a light behind it you should see 4 or 3 points (depending on which side).
If you really want to get picky also hold a magnifying glass over the ink i was talking about and it's not just ink, it's actually micro printing of the denomination in words. Eg. a whole bunch of words saying FIFTY DOLLARS and not just ink. Most devices arn't good enough to catch the microprinting and reprodice it, if they are then hell, they deserve to use that note.
LOL, i used to work in broady, then i've worked in Niddrie and Moonee Ponds, Highpoint and Altona (thats all off the top of my head). I have to be able to tell when people try to pay with fake credit cards and money! Only one fake credit card was ever processed by me, and i stalled as long as i could because i was running the shop on my own and had no one to check with.
But i can also tell customers that steal **** or are part of a team from the moment they walk inMaybe i've just been working too much LOL Mind you, i look after all the security systems in Highpoint Dick Smith unlike the other staff members who only disarm then and arm them again when they go off.
yeah we have had a couple at my work...... 1 fake credit card.... lmao the name on the card was "raisin marijuana" LOL
just try and rip it when you put it into the till, so its not so sus![]()
had fake 50's go thru a bakery i used to work at. we got them on camera... was funny, because they did it twice in one week. Police caught them and raided there house and found a truck load of them they were a young couple too.
dont worry, il start a ride thread soon.
At work i've copped a few of these. Very easy to spot. They feel like paper, they tear, lack colour and the window has white out it. By far the best fakes i have ever seen but it still amazes me how other staff collect them without noticing.
