Today I went out with the brother to the property with the yz250 and the kx85 - and they just fitted on the tray. He's hoping to get himself a kx250 soon and we've got no idea how we're going to transport them. Is it legal to drive around with the tailgate down so we've got a bit more room?
I wouldnt see why not, providing everything is secured.

You could always buy a second plate and make an attachment so it can attach to be visible when the tailgate is down?

Yeah, no legality issues at all with what you plan to do. I wouldn't recommend this, but I used to cart around massive stuff on my ute up in Queesnland, hanging up to a meter off the back. I just put lots of orange stuff on the back and made sure it was tied down nice and tight(number plate was completely invisible
)

Or you could unscrew the plate you have and hang it off the back...
That way the cops will see you are at least trying.......
Yeah number plates have to be visible, thats why they make those mini plates to go on bike racks.
Do what BOGANV8 or minux suggest.
Lol. Dirtbikes. Just chuck em sideways in the tray. They're designed for it.
Seriously though, tie up the tailgate so it's resting on the wheel. Ie. instead of being fully down, have it tilted on an angle. A good way is to strap the tailgate to the anchor closest to the cabin. It'll only be about 30 degree's down and you won't have any hassles.
I think the law was no obstructions over 90mm past the rear axle. Many people however go longer than that (considering most vehicles end about then)
If its going to be a regular occurrence, how expensive is a bike trailer?
