Anyone here done a prevoc in electrical/refrigeration. im about to start next year at tafe for 6 months. just want to know what im in for etc cheers
Yep, wasted 6 months of my life, it in no way helped me get a job, nor did it save time in anyway at the later stage!
Im in VIC, have been qualified for 7 years now, even after doing a 6 month Pre Vocational course within Tafe it helped in no way cutting back the 4 year time frame for my apprentiship, i would have been better of just starting my apprentiship the 6months earlier!
Think my mate is doing that next year too.........he's goin to Holmesglen/moorabin tafe.

My advice is start the prevoc but apply for apprenticeships while you do it. it might make it easier to get an apprenticeship because you've shown an interest in the field but there is no real advantage in finishing the prevoc except that you spend less of your 4 years at trade school which only save your boss money.
yeah, it's a small taste of what you can expect when a apprentice, some of the subjects you will ask wtf am i doing studying this. some will plain bore you. either way, concentrate and dont be afraid to ask questions, drama with alot of the young fella's is they beleive the wrong thing, come time for trade test, you fail.
each state is different though. good luck and enjoy, you will reap the rewards when your finished.

yeah mate i done it what state are you in yeah as garth said some will bore the **** out of u but serious pay attention and it does take time off that 6 months full time is the first year apprenticeship schoolinggggg so when u start your apprentice ship u will be still a first year but second year in schooling PAY ATTENTION seriously lol dont forget the old stuff and dont skip classes they will fail u
yeah im in sa. hopefully goin to regency park to study electrical/and refigeration. 2nd prefs are just electrical pre-vocs. im so keen to get a trade.
refrigeration in 2 seconds
big pipe little pipe, one sucks the other one doesnt.
refrigeration is a good trade. but they do work hard those boys.
either way in qld both are on roughtly the same coin, if anything, us sparkies get abotu 50 cents more then they do, but they get a bigger tool alowance.
regency ohhhh dude u are gonna hate those teachers seriously dont skip a class EVEN IF YOU ARE SICK there is one dude there if ur not there automatically hell find a way of trying to fail you be careful lol
Im currently 3rd year apprentice and didnt do a pre-apprenticeship course(what they call it in VIC) SAV_117 is right it almost takes off the first year of schooling well worth it.
Also dont take 1 day off! ive learnt the hard way, ive finished for the year and im 2 subjects down... and ive gotta go back and complete them once i finish schooling.
Yeah i did one here in canberra, but it only went for about 7 weeks. I ended up getting apprenticeship out of it. After i did it, i knew a few things instead of starting an apprenticeship and knowing stuff all, Just finished my 1st year![]()
Australia. Love it or leave it
depending on which state your in depends on how much time it takes off, just remember this, it takes of theroy time, not practical time. you still need a certain amount of hour's to acheive the level of compentcy required.

how much did it cost sav
I suppose it's a good idea to do it if you have no idea how electricity works or how it can kill you if you lick it, but i'd rather do what i'm doing and have my boss pay me to do first year tafe.
If you've done year 12 general maths and physics you probably won't need it. Every formula and 80% of the electrical theory they taught us i learnt in school.
bingo!
over here in WA almost every electrical apprenticeship says pre app req'd...
i did one n i liked it. first year of my tafe for my apprenticeship done... then i started my apprenticeship and atleast i had a slight idea as to what the tradesman was talking about... im a second year now n i will be finished my tafe in the early stages of next year...
i seen it mentioned above that it didnt help them with cutting the apprenticeship short... that was the companys choice... if you finish all your modules and prove yourself compitent you can get signed off early. my lecturer told me that if everything goes smoothly i will be elligible for sign off just before i turn 4th year... i want to do atleast 3 years of my apprenticeship before i get signed off tho. so i will be pushing for sign off between 3-3.5 years.
im not sure about other states, but in qld, (im a qld and nsw electrician) you are required to reach a certain level of compentcy, this is acheived by hour's on the job, depending on how you fill in your profile sheet, will depend on which one of the licences you get. if you need to get say a minimum of 3000 hour's they wont sign you off unless you have acheived those minimum hours. so come 3rd year, and your down by a few hour's tough, they wont sign you off untill you have acheived the set level of compencty.
all the prevo does is gives you a basic knowledge of theory, the time it cuts off is some hour's at tafe, thats all it actually cuts off. actual time on the job doesnt get shortened.
just remember, keep your head down, study, the prevoc is a taste of whats to come, there are some subjects that will drive you mad, i.e. 3 phase induction motors, and phaser angles, they will drive you crazy, others will be nice and easy,
