Hi in S.A they have brought in the new laws that L's have 12months not 6month and an up in p plates but cant remember with l's conditions does it count for L plates already on license? cause im 25days off my p's and this will screw me over having to get my parents or a bus to take me to work for another 6months because people are idiots and screwing it up for the rest. any information would be helpful

When they changed the power laws in vic it only affected new p platers and not those already on them as some had bought cars that were outside the new laws but with in the others so yeah.. bit confusing but thats how they did it here

Not if you already own them and already have the licence. I seriously doubt they would change the law for current provisional licence holders, they didn't when it changed in QLD.

As said, it will only effect new P platers etc.

Either way, this country has gone to ****! Next we'll see the drinking age raised to 25, and everyone owning a gun for 'protection'........

Dont see how restricting young people from driving higher powered vehicles is going to make the country go to ****, may annoy a small number of people, inconvenience them? no.
I dont see the logical consequence that this would lead to relaxation of our gun control laws.

In any regard, restricting vehicle choices for p platers hardly compares to the change to our country that would occur if we adopted US gun control laws(which we'd need to have for everyone to have a gun at hand for protection)

Science help us if we loose our gun control laws! I'm almost glad for what happened at Port Arthur given how it tightened up the country's stance on gun control.

    Taken from the article...

Mr Rann said the Government was "considering" banning P1 and P2 plated drivers from getting behind the wheel of high-powered cars.

However, there would be "a range of exemptions" to safeguard workers and rural residents who relied on powerful vehicles.
I am all for leaners and p platers to be restricted from high powered vehicles with in reason..

I don't think I would even pass my test if I had to sit it today.

Before I took my driving test (if you can call it that) I drove for a few weeks around the place in my boy friends car then decided it was time.

I presented myself to a country police station on the outskirts of Adelaide where the Officer got in the car and asked me to drive him up the main street to the Post Office. I had to pull over while he got out and retrieved the mail. Time for a U-Turn, no hard feat in a wide road. Then he had me pull off the road and reverse between 2 trees that were miles apart. Back to the station to be handed my licence.

Back then everyone I knew used this loophole to get their licence. Sure we could have gone to our local motor reg and sat a proper test, but why do that?

Anyway we all had V8's back then, the guys all had testosterone issues like they do today, resulting in drag races, burnouts, drifting etc. yet I only recall two deaths due to road fatalities. One got t-boned on his Harley, the other run over crossing the road by a drunk driver. Back then also, they didn't have the drink driving laws like today. My boy friend was pulled over for speeding one hot sunny day about 20 years ago now with a opened bottle of beer between his legs. As the cop was writing out the ticket he said 'nice day for a beer, take it easy son and keep the speed down.'

I assume theyll have an exemption System which will probably also be a failure. I had a friend get a VY SS ute and his reason for exemption was "he helps a friend move computer parts" and that was accepted.

TVR-190: That LSD service paid off. Stato just got very sideways.

what happens if you already own a high powered vehicle, are on your P2's, but lose your license, going back to your P1's, or possibly your L's?

In QLD I think if your licence is suspended then you continue on the laws you were on when you got the licence, but if it's disqualified and cancelled completely, you have to get a new one and as such, have to abide by the new laws.

I know someone who has an R33 skyline, he ran up the arse of someone, was doing 143kmh in an 80kmh zone. Narrowly avoided jailtime, but his licence has been cancelled, he's on 18 months probation, 100hr community service. He was told that when he gets another licence, he would be under the new provisional licence laws.

I'm pretty sure it says somewhere that only the L's from 6 months to 12 months will be passed within a few months....the other laws like the power restrictions will only be in around 2010 if they are passed.....so I don't think anyone on here has to worry.

    These laws are retarded.
Spend four years driving a wet paper bag around, then the moment you get your full licence your some how skilled enough to drive a rocket?

Why don't they make another licence for owning a car with a certain power to weight ratio, and have a set driving course that you must pass to prove you are capable of handling that vehicle. Just like a truck licence.

Just because you've been driving for four years, doesn't mean you have a clue.

... Just because you've been driving for four years, doesn't mean you have a clue.
Zactly. Ideally they should have a minimum requirement for cars above a certain power-weight ratio, advanced and defensive driving courses etc. Once you get that you have a P1 advanced licence or something like that.

But hey, that wouldn't seem like it was doing anything for the voting public, would it? The laws are just a bandaid measure; they do nothing, but whoever brings them in gets the votes. If you're getting your L's and P1 licence before you turn 18, you can't vote and they don't give a rat's ass what you think of them.

People die because they don't concentrate, and because they do stupid things.
You don't need a V8 to do either of those.

I doubt it. Exemptions are for people who deserve it. Losing your license proves you don't deserve it!

I don't think you'd be forced to sell the car, but you wont be legally allowed to drive it.

Exactly. You can still get an '86 model Laser to do 120km/h.

What gives me the sh*ts with these new laws is:

They claim they force young drivers to drive less powerfull cars.
The "less powerfull cars" are generally 15-20yrs old. And are far from safe in a low speed accident. Have alook at the statistics, and see how many accidents occur every year, then compare that to how many accidents are fatal.
Its more probable that you'll end up with a fractured wrist in a 60km/h crash at an intersection in a 1986 model Laser than it is in a 2005 model SS Commodore.
But because the news chooses not to report on people ending up with small injuries and dibilitating soft tissue injuries like torn muscles the dribble pot public couldnt care less.
Yet when Joe idiot the retarded 17yr old next door takes his fullysik VS executive out and wraps it around a poll trying to be D1 world champion, the flood gates of moronic reporting and equally moronic reply's from the public open.

This kind of public opinion doesn't just reflect the younger population though.
As you can clearly see the headlines have changed from "P-plate speeder" to
    "Out of control Hoons".

About the only people out of control are the doomsday current affairs programs and Politicians that base their legislation on what they reading f*cking tabloid newspapers.

A agree with Stealthy. This country is going down the tubes when one-sided public contests like this go on.
Genuine Enthusiasts need representation I think.

    Well said Soop!

Along with these stupid car laws (aswell as raising the legal age to drive) we have the stupidity that is the internet censor! I can see a government getting overthrown if that comes in.
