i got a cheap hoist, single phase, even has a plug on it lol, 3500kg, its more the concrete work to make a hoist safe than anything else, I believe the concrete needs to be 800mm deep 400mm diameter around the mounting of the hoist, so just throwing one on normal concrete can cause it to tip with a car on it, funny sight, not so funny for the owner. But I would have to agree hoist is much better than a pit, can work on the whole car, not just the middle section lol
My house came with a pit in the gararge. I use it all the time for my oil changes and stuff.
The people who built it made a removable cover out of plywood (quite thick) so it can be safely covered when not in use.

I would trust a metal grate but not plywood, haha, imagine if you parked the car onto the plywood.
I have allready decided long, long ago, when me and the missus buy a place, we are having a medium sized shed, and a hoist, I dont car if I have to stack two sheds ontop of each other, it will friggen fit.
so is that where u store all your victims Clair? lol
Yeah, hoists are cheap as these days.
And that pit looks scary.......not only what he said ^ but it looks like you'd fall a long way if you fell in. Like...........you can't even see the bottom its so deep. But that might just be the angle.

i didnt know what you guys meant by pitt. i have never seen one of theese in my life.
one of my good mates has what is like a raised driveway in his garage. about 50cm high.
you put your car onto the driveway and the middle is still open. you can climb in and do what ever you need to.
although for some things it really is easier just using a jack and stands.
lol are there spikes at the bottom of that pit like in tekken?
I remember being in a pit at trade school when one of the other apprentices was holding a cigarette lighter above a tray of X-55 (part cleaning fluid). Of course it flamed up, he dropped the tray, it spread all over the pit floor on fire, and 4 of us all tore our shirts on the cars front number plate scrambling out of the pit. You always remember the fun times.
Pits are always a pain in the butt when they fill up with water too.
Good thick hardwood boards are the safest thing to cover them with. You know..like railway sleepers.

I used to use a pit on my mates farm to service my car. They are a little awkward to get into/out of if you park too far forward, but miles easier than working under it on ramps/stands.
Of course a hoist would be the way to go if you have one available though

We are talking about something for the home mechanic?
Would imagine setting up a hoist properly with the correct supports would be quite expensive, as would building a garage that would be high enough, the average suburban garage might be okay if all you were going to lift was an Mg, and you were only 5ft tall, but really, you'd need at least a 3.5m ceiling for the average car and person to work under it.
The pit seems like a more economical solution. Have seen a few in my time, but non filled with concrete, so they can get damp. unless one is running the motor whilst under there, Id feel a lot safer under a car in a pit, than one on a hoist.
There are some advantages to a pit too, if any of the controls are needed to be used the car is at ground level

If a hoist is installed correctly, as it should be then there isnt going to be an issue with safety of getting under it. If you dont install it correctly and it falls or causes the car to drop then it's your own fault.
OAnd you still have to climb out of the pit to reach the controls. So i dont really see where you're coming from based on a convenience issue?

Perhaps this will help: If a second person is around helping with the job,( ie may get them to turn the wheel while we see what is happening underneath), then that person doesnt have to be sitting stranded in a car 2 and a bit metres of the ground![]()
