Does anyone have a PIT at home?
I wonder how common these are now days??
Ive come across two houses with pits in my house hunt so far, & both houses are under contract so no chance, but I wonder, anyone know how much a pit costs?
I figure because it needs to be deep, it would need to be done by a professional, is this right? Or am I just making shit up? lols?
So is it worth while putting one in do you think?
are you talking about the pits they have at truck garages?
easy to put one in but usually easier if done before the shed and if the shed is to be council approved they wont sign off on a slab with a pit in it. Unless you build the shed on footings, have it approved then dig the pit in the shed...
Someone might fill in teh blanks here but as far as i know in Vic you aren't allowed build them anymore (there must certainly be some stretch here but your typical old hollow-core or besser constructed cement pit isn't allowed - something to do with CO2 deaths).
We bought a house 6 months ago and we're building a pit although I doubt its the variety you are talking about- fire/bbq pit lol
Had a pit at my last house in a big double shed...never used it once.
Now i dont have one i need it all the time.
I'm wondering if having a pit actually makes it easier to work on your car ? It might make a few jobs easier but i reckon it would be a pain in the ass too ? you climb in start to work, need another tool ... climb out, get tool, climb back in ...
Anyone done much work in a pit before ?
As for the CO poisoning , that would be a serious problem. CO, from say a running engine, is denser than air and would sit in the pit and gas you if your head was below the surface level
one of my mates has one which we used to put a new clutch in his vehicle alot easier then pulling everything out.
but apart from that havent seen another one

yeah used to work in a half pit sometimes at my mates work shop (half deep pit & then there was small ramps/platform on top, kinda hard to explain lol) but basically ment it wasnt heaps deep, I found it great, I usually kept tools ontop of the concrete which is under the ramps & it worked well. That might be too much of a set up for home thou.
So from reading above, there is a chance they are no longer legal?
ive seen a few in my day my best mate just bought a house with a pit, and my uncle has one as well.
Ive never liked pits, maybe caus im tall (6foot 4), and I dont like feeling like im trapped in, and its inconvenient.
My mate has a hoist and full workshop on his farm, just for personel use, so that comes in handy![]()
My dads uncle was an old QLD'er. His backyard was on a hill and he built some 'ramps' from like Telegraph poles with railway sleeper 'planks' on top which he could drive his Kombi onto a stand underneath. Kind of like a pit but without the walls !! Wonder what the council would think of that these days.
i got one, bloody excellent, only 2nd to a hoist

As far as i know their still legal, but you have to provide warning signs so potential burgulars and firefighters ec know!

You can get pits made and then dropped into your floor once you have it ready to go.
i had a pit in one of my old houses and i wasnt really fond of it.
never really did make any of the undercar jobs any easier than using a jack and stands.
IMO, spend the $2500 and buy a hoist.
I haven't got one, but my cousin has one, a mate has one, and my uncle has one, and one of my other uncles has a hoist. I'm not sure how much they'd cost for a good one all installed, but I've seen 2 post hoists on ebay for around 2-3k. Obviously would more then likely have to be professionally installed and wired up so would cost a bit more in the long run, plus paying a bit extra to find a decent brand.....but I rekon it would be worth it.
My Pop made some oversized car ramps....so ya drive the whole car onto the ramps. Can't stand under them, gotta kneel down, but it's a pretty good setup.

when you can buy hoists for like 4g's... why go tot he effort to build a stupid pit
aZk.
Yer you sure can, mine is three phase but i have three phase power(sparky), i would never own a pit, my hoist is the way to go
Keep your eyes on ebay, i got my hoist for $1100 inc delivery, plus its not very hard to move if you want to take it from house to house
Even if you were to buy a three phase one i have some spare VSD's(variable speed drives) and they ollow you to run three phase motor from single phase power
Why get a pit when you can get a hoist?

there's a house on the way to the tip we go to that has a hoist in the front yard.
no shed or anything just a hoist in the driveway.
