I'm currently 16 and my parents bought me a car for my b'day. I have been wanting my bike licence too for quite a while. I can go for my bike licence in April but have started to really think about it now.
My original plan was to have the lancer for my L's then once i got my P's, I'd get the commodore. Then it changed to me buying a bike, then having the choice of either the lancer or berlina if I wanted to drive somewhere, pick up mates, whatever.
I put the idea to my mum and she went off her nut saying if I bought a bike she would sell the lancer and let me do whatever I wanted but in doing this I doubt I'd get the berlina.
Should I just buy a bike and try to get the berlina anyway (just drive it whenever I wanted), or should I keep the lancer and stick to my original plan?
If I bought the bike I spose I could try to use the berlina whenever but if that didn't work I could just sell the bike and buy myself a commodore.
A bit confusing but any suggestions would be great.

Come again? So did your parents say you can have the berlina when you get your P's or are you just assuming this? Doesnt sound like a solid plan to me. If you want a car, buy a car, if you want a bike, buy a bike. Dont always expect handouts. Mummy wont be able to support you forever.
Once again thank you for your great help.
I've been gunning for the berlina ever since we bought it (2004) and my parents keep giving me ideas that I'm gonna get it. Like when your young and really wanting some toy. Your parents never say "Yes, we're gonna buy it for you", they keep you in suspense. I'm pretty confident that I'll get the berlina when I get my p's but not 100%.
A Commodore is a passion. Anything else is just a car
Well in saying that I still wouldnt count on it 100%. If you really want a bike then go for it and keep the lancer to fall back on if you dont get the berlina. I cant see why your mum would sell the lancer, after all its yours isnt it?
sell the lancer and buy a commy![]()
work hard, buy your own car, you will appreciate it more if you work for it! trust me!
Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!
What bike are you looking at?
R1 sounds like a perfect learner bike for you. Either that or the Hayabusa.
Mate, just wait it out and see what happens man, youve got ages anyway. The best thing to do it go your own way from the parentals, don't rely on them, don't take the berlina. They have already given you a huge headstart by buying your first car, from there you should act like an adult and save up enough say until your on your opens then buy a v8 or something along the likes. Im sure the ol lancer can last that long, and by the time your on your opens you will have a nice bank balance to buy a great commodore and you can say "I did this on my own". Its called self pride.
Lol......
If I was you I'd be happy with the lancer. Most guys our age don't even have a car.
And I paid for my tonner with my own hard earned cash.
From what you say, it sounds like your parents don't want you to get a bike. And plus, it's a kick in the teeth to your parents, coz they shelled out for a car for you - that includes rego, insurance etc. only for you to go and buy a bike. Which means you or they would have to pay another rego and insurance.
And besides, you say they didn't want you to spend you cash, buying a bike will have defeat the purpose of them buying you a car in the first place.
Also, what Morton said above is true too.
in 2 years time, the vy won't be anything special, and you'll get no respect for mummy and daddy having bought you your first car, and then given you another more expensive car. People rely on handouts too much these days.
If you work hard for something, you're likely to appreciate it a lot more.
EDIT: I meant Mack, not morton.

leave him alone for **** sake i hate it when ppl do that he asked a question stop callen him spoilt this spoilt that help him or **** off. anyway mate id buy the bike if u really want it why wouldnt u be able to drive the berlina????
I'm probably just gonna hold the lancer and hope for the berlina. If that doesnt work I'm selling the lancer and getting a commy. My mum will sell it simply because she can (assuming dad lets her. Doubtful).
That was my plan but my dad thought if he'd let me buy my own car I'd spend every cent I had earnt.
That's sorta what I've decided to do. I'm not gonna buy a bike yet. I'll wait until I've got everything already sorted out. I'm not depending on them to give me the berlina but it would be great if they did. Like I was saying, I've been wanting this car for years. I am the only one who looks after it. My parents don't give a sh!t about cars. If I don't get the berlina I'm gonna buy myself a commy. Hopefully by the time I get my full licence I can afford to get myself that nice V8.

ever thought maybe they are trying to keep you safe
and dont give a shit about a bike.
thats why they bought you a car. it is alot safer and lets face it when you first get your licence. you only want to go out. your not doing it for transportation.
its more to hang out with your mates etc.
i reckon your best off sticking with your lancer. and if your parents give you the berlina be happy.
thats all i can say. they probably care more about you than to see you riding a dangerous motorbike.
Raised a fair point. Granted the VY won't be anything special but it will be to me. It has been my dream car for years. You say I haven't worked for this car. Maybe not in a financial way but I have treated this car like a show car ever since we got it and true thats not real work but it's not easy to show your parents that you care about a car so freakin much you would do anything to get it. I was willing to buy the car from my parents but they said "no, we'll see what happens in a few years". Even if I bought myself a commy exactly the same as the one my parents have, I would probably still want the berlina more simply because I've tried so hard to get it for so long.
The plan was to give her the lancer when I got my P's and I get the commy. She needs a car to get to work. If i went and bought a bike she would sell the lancer and not give me any chance to use the berlina. Normally this wouldn't matter much but transporting mates around needs a car.

Yes, you are right. My dad had a good mate that had a really nice bike back in the day. Anyway, he was in a really bad crash and became a paraplegic.
I am going to keep the lancer and prey for the berlina. Bike will come down the track probably when I move out and have a full-time job.

Your only young mate, give it time. Good things come to people who wait.
For the ones who were actually helpful thanks. I have made up my mind. This sorta turned out to be a "who bought there first car" topic but nevertheless there was some good advice given. Lets just close this thread to stop any more pointless internet bickering.

I reckon thats a good idea to hold off on the bike hey. I'm not going to give you the spoilt brat lecture, fact is if my parents were giving me a car I wouldn't say no lol. You haven't done anything wrong, we plan on buying our kids their first cars. Its a luxury my hubby and I never had and we want our kids to save up for a real investment, not a depreciating piece of crap car.
The reason I say holding off on a bike is a good idea is because they are just so dangerous to drive on the roads. I understand why your mum would go mental and not want you to have one. There are too many idiots on the road and bike riders are the most vulnerable to these idiots. Have your bike, just save it for the track, thrashing a bike around in the mud has got to be more fun than riding on the road to get from a to b.
^^^^ Don't get a bike unless you have a death wish.

Well good onya man. And I know what you mean about wanting the car. I've wanted my dad's cars ever since I was born lol. (HZ Tonner and HZ Stato).
And what I said may have been a bit harsh, VY may be nothing special, but that's down to ones personal tastes. The same could be said for a HZ or WB holden...........its all comes down to what you like.
But yeah, I kinda don't find bikes that fascinating..............don't see what the big deal is all about. But anyways.

on the topic of bikes everyone is gonna be biased some ppl who dont ride are going to say there terrible your dead. ppl who do ride (me) are gonna tell you YES it is dangerous but if u be careful you will be okay you need to watch for everything you need to position your self where the car in front of you can see you and a like in saying this i probably wouldnt use a bike as a daily thing especially going to work and back after work you might be really tired you really dont want to be in a bike if that happens
Sometimes you can do everything right, and some idiot will still crash into you. Hell, I've been rear ended when I was stopped at the lights for 5 minutes!
Fact is, everyone I've met who has ridden a bike for any reasonable length of time (and is still alive) has a VERY good reason why they don't ride anymore...
Errr if that is the case, clearly your friends did not have very good roadcraft. I honestly feel safer riding a bike (and I've been riding for a number of years), than driving a car. The reason being, I am far more confident in avoiding accidents due to the better manoeverability of a bike. Yep, if you crash, chances are you'll cop more damage, but if you're a smart rider, you can reduce your chances far more. As for getting rear ended, that can also be quite easily avoided on a bike if you're alert and keep an eye on your mirrors, being on a bike you can shoot up the middle of the traffic if some moron isn't paying attention behind you.
As for the OP, my advice to you would be to get your car, learn the basics of the roads for a number of years, wait till you're at least 20-21, grown up a little bit and know how to spot trouble and avoid it before jumping on a bike.
I don't ride anymore because I currently don't have the cash to buy outright. I was about 10 seconds away from getting an '08 Z750, it was a treat to ride.
As for riding, I've been in two bike accidents, neither of which were my fault. What I've learned is that riding like you're driving a car will see you dead. You also need to learn how to ride properly. I see too many riders wobbling around turns using their handlebars and not being able to handle anything slow speed. Not only learner riders either.
Same with riders who ride around in blindspots of cars and near trucks. It's stuff you can't get away with in a car.
