Default Dirtbikes - who's into them?

Just wondering how mnay JCers are into dirtbikes? If so what bike do you have and where do you do most of your riding...also any funny stories to go along with days on the dirt :P OH and most importent are you a 2-t fan or a 4-t fan?

Well i gots me a CR 250 05' love it to bits, thing hammers through the bush, as i do most of my riding in the bush (few ppl in the family have huge properties with plenty of bush nad hills to climb).

another thing i must add is what is it with everyone going 4 stroke? even in the racing scene you hardly ever see 2 strokes above the 125 class!! i've riden quite a few differant 4 strokes and for me it just doesn't give the grin from ear to ear that a 2 stroke does...your thoughts?

More reliable, less hassle. As for racing, well the same can be said of the Moto GP. 4 strokes are just a far more predictable beast. With the reduction of weight in frame technology, dirt bikes can now afford to have bigger 4 stroke engines over 2 strokes.

I agree though, for dirt bikes, 2 strokes are far more fun.

I don't have a dirt bike, but am into quad biking. My mates got a Polaris Outlaw 500 SE, im really wanting to get one but funds are limited atm.
I usually going quad biking everytime he goes.
Theres a awesome quad bike park out at Frogmore, which is about 25km east of Boorowa in central west NSW. Its about 260 acres of all different types of tracks.

yea can see where you are coming from, was just dissapointed last time i was out at echo valley and the place was just riddled with 4 strokes... mind you it's been quite a while since i've been around a track (about 6 years :P) and was just surprised to see so many of them...

I cant get enough of it, I have been riding since about 9 doing mostly trails but biggest problem now is finding people to ride with!!

I bought a 94' KX 250 about 2 years ago, and my mate got a 00' YZ 125 last year so we try hit up some of the local riding parks whenever we can. Mainly Pacific Park, but last week we went up to Louee for the day, was awesome definitely going back!! Also very big 2 stroke fan here

    Post some pics up

I do abit of dirt riding. I ride a KTM 250 EXT 2-stroke, I dont actually own it, just the sole rider, and there anytime I want it lol. Occasionaly ride a Yamie 426 to.

I do all my riding at a mates property, hes got 400 acres down here, and 1200 acres of bush, rivers, hillclimbs and all sorts of good riding tracks. Use to go up bush but the laws are just stupid down here and there cracking down so its not worth the hassle.

I dont mind 2-strokes, I love the sound, and the power up high, but down low its just a dog. When getting tired it can get it annoying be unpredictable.
I love the 4-stroke, smooth power delivery the whole way through, just lots of balls down low, and there so simple to maintain.

But I have no personel choice on 2 vs 4 stroke, I like both, but if I was buying one, Id go a 4-stroke.

I don't ride but my brothers and a few mates do (might buy a quad when I lose my licence). We live right on the border of the salt flats, and my mate's Mum owns a huge chunk of it about 2 minutes away. So we always go there. They mainly got quads tho, a few banshee's and a few smaller quads for the kids. My bro has a quad (dunno wat sort) and my other bro has a KTM 620SC. The best bit is living only 2 minutes away from where they can be ridden legally....and by living here, my bro's just jump on them out the back and head out the salt flats, no need to trailer them around.

Just starting to get into it myself. I had never riden until last year because I was a wuss, but we bought my daughter just a cheapy 70cc atomik from ebay to see if she'd like it and she does so we're gonna buy her a real bike for her bithday so she can start motocross. Just bought our son a pw50 for xmas and he loves it, still on training wheels. So being too wussy to start on a real bike I had a go on my daughters bike and loved it, now I trash around on it for a bit every time we go riding. I nearlly shit myself the first time I got on it but now it seems too slow even for our daughter. Going to get something amore suitable size when finances permit, but just having bought a house that takes priority so might be a while Can't wait til our little man is riding properly and we can all go riding together.

Pit Bikes = AWESOME FUN! lol mate has a few of them, a thumpster 110cc and the 125cc version as well, heaps of fun to smash those lil things would love to get one of those 140cc's registered so i could use it to run up to the shops n back or to mates places

anyway just remembered my most stupidest moment on my bike...was out at the bridge and was taking my mate for a strap around the place, we come to this creek crossing and with the water being hell muddy i decided to jump off and check the depth...seemed like only a foot deep so told my mate wait here and i'll sus it out....took off, hit the creek and then massive sink only the top of the bars could be seen and i got thrown...it wasn't 1 foot deep at all :P you get some funny looks going back to your trtailer with your mate in tears and your drenched from head to toe..

lol that reminds me of a mate... He bought a brand new Yamie YZ250(?) went to go through a river crossing. Deeper then he thought, he lost the bike as it started floating down stream. He found it about 1km up the river, and he couldnt get it out, so he moved into some scrub and hid it. Rode back an hour an half with a mate to go get the ute. a nice 2 hours and 47 minute drive (they filmed it haha) back to the bike, they winched it back out. Gearbox, motor everything full of water and mud. Drained all the oil and regreased everything and she lives on.

Same mate, put another mates brand new bike on the trailer after taking it for his first ride, he didnt put the front tie downs on properly, thus it coming off and getting dragged behind the trailer *insert face palm*

I swear to never let this mate go near my bike haha.

    i love my bikes
just the feel of getting out and just riding, you and your bike no one else to factor
with. riding hard or just crusing its relaxing

much preffer my yz over the old wr i had, the power is more usable for the trails i ride on but the powerband was quite fun still
the yz still has enough skating action when i open it fully

anzac day last year i had a good stack and was out of work for 3 months
havnt really riden much sinze as ive knuckled down on the vl and getting it done but this weekend im thinking of heading out

bush riding is great, i mainly ride my 05 TE450, it got stump pulling torque and is really easy to ride, i mainly just ride around the south coast of nsw, i enjoy camps, day trips etc etc, longest 1 day trip was 173km's from 10am to 3pm, including, lunch, stops etc etc

i prefer slow technical stuff, rather than high speed trails, theres nothing more adrenalin pumping than technical stuff

pics of my bikes are listed in the threads below VVV

You'll love it, mate. My mates is a 4 stroke, with independant rear suspension, which helps along rough terrain.
I went out to Frogmore early last year, i forget the bike i was on but geez it hammered it was only a 220cc, had a awesome time

Since when were 2-stroke motors less reliable than 4-stoke?!? Not to mention you get ~half the power from having half the number of power strokes! Am I missing something?!

think they were more so meaning up keep/matinace not so much reliable
like anything its only as reliable as you make it, keep it serviced and clean, dont thrash it too much and it will last

4 stroke, service every 50 hours, just straight 98ron unleaded
2 stroke, mix fuel if no built in mixer, plugs every few rides or some case every ride,

4 stroke, repair bill more expensive
    2 stroke, rebuld cheap

so both have there goods and bads

i had the my wr250z for a few hours before i blew the motor, got it rebuilt and just kept having probs with the tunning and running of it.
kinda turned me off the 2 stroke but i reckon it was more so down to my bad luck with the bike, LEMON so sold it to a wreaker

got the yz250f and havnt looked back. its much nicer to ride seems as it would be on par with the wr speed wise easy and its much lighter and nimble
93kg dry weight, great fun popping it up in third over ruts along the trails

Hmmm i beg to differ. Have you read the new honda manuals for the four strokes? they reccomend a piston change at 10 hours! This is the main reason the 4 strokes are sort of keeping up with the 2 bangers (that and its 125 2t vs 250 4t...), they tuning them for peak power - not to last!
I've never quite understood the notion that 2 strokes go through plugs so easy, i'm up to my 2nd top end and i've spent maybe $50 on plugs since new.

I've been into bikes my whole life starting with a pw80, the brother's kx85, my crm250 and now the yz. I ride on the family's property (about 10,000 acres)
My YZ250WR has the best of both worlds - you can register it like a 4t AND it sounds like a strangled hair dryer!
Having said that i'll be going four stroke next - i'm getting old and boring and don't like the 2 stroke snap as much anymore..

Mehhh mx 4 strokes have more maintenence then 2 strokes! I like 2 strokes better but im a shit load faster on a 4 stroke. anyone can jump on a 4 stroke and ride fast, try do the same on a 2 stroke and you will end up wraped around a tree lol.

has anyone here that rides dirt bikes on the road, discovered the full blown bikies on their harleys get real cut up if you take off from the lights quicker than them?

2 strokes need to be serviced far more regularly to be kept in better condition. 2 strokes are cheaper to maintain, but they do require alot more maintenance, which often many people either neglect or are not willing to do for a paddock basher. Lets not go into the issues of when you get your fuel/oil mix wrong, or the oil injection packs it in.

In regards to getting more power from less strokes are you deliberately neglecting the 2nd sentence in my post for a reason? I do believe I mentioned the fact that frames are getting lighter and lighter so the bikes can afford to have heavier engines (ie 4 strokes) without any real loss in handling or power over the 2 strokes.

So in short, yes you are missing something.
