Triplets conceived on different days:
A woman has been told she's pregnant with triplets who were conceived on different days.
Joanne Allen and Justin Brown from Geelong discovered they were expected the three babies when they went for the 15 week scan.
Joanne told Channel 7's Sunrise, "The doctor said there was something there. Then said 'There's two in there'. Then she said 'Yes there's three'."
"I thought if she was going say four, I'd walk out of there."
Justin added, "I had a feeling of two. I didn't know whether to run out the door... I didn't know what to do, it was too much of a shock."
The couple were told that Joanne was carrying twins and another baby. There are two boys of the same age, and another baby, a girl who is four days younger. The younger baby is known as a singleton.
Medical editor for Sunrise, Dr John D'Arcy, explained, "What's happened here is the flow of hormones at the time has caused two eggs to be produced by the ovary. The first egg was fertilised, and the second at a later stage was fertilised as well."
"It could be the same flow or sperm, or a different flow."
He added, "It can happen but it's pretty rare. It's an uncommon phenomenon."
