This arvo, I had to change my wheel due to having a flat.
About six months ago, I had my tyres fitted to new VY 2 Calais rims at the local JAX dealer.
When I went to remove the wheel nuts today, I couldn't shift any of them - they were so tight they bent my wheel brace and it's not one of the cheap ones from K-Mart - it's a tough old bird I've had for years.
I was able to loosen four of them by using a breaker bar and extension but the fifth one would not move at all. Eventually, I stripped the head of the nut and was faced with removing it by other means.
This involved drilling out the base of the nut, to break its grip on the stud. It eventually worked, but now I have a rooted stud and the wheel is damaged in the taper.
I intend to go back to Jax on Monday and ask them to undo all the other nuts and retighten them sensibly, and pay for the repairs to my wheel, which will involve drilling out the taper and pressing in a sleeve.
Anybody else ever experienced this sort of stupidity from a tyre dealer before? F*** me, I think the tension on wheel nuts is only meant to be about 60 lb/ft, but these mongrels must have been upwards of 100 or more.
you have buckleys chance of getting them to pay for it, after 6 months all they have to say is that some one else has tightened them up since then. You cant prove that no one else has touched them when it all boils down to it..
Which sucks ass..
Too many business involved with wheels and tyres and mechanics over tighten wheel nuts.. you would think they would know better.
Has the same problem.
Even the compressor couldn't undo it.
That was after I had my tyres done at Beaurepaires.
I havn't, but once when my dad went the ********s used the normal socket to put his locknuts on (without a key) and stuffed all 4 of them
(not sure what place it was)
I frikn hate that, happens all the time to me.
I swear I almost shat my pants I was trying so hard one time to get them off! lol
You're probably right, but it's worth a go. I certainly want them to release the other nuts. I haven;t tried them but I'll bet they are all the same. I suspect the business will know that they are too tight for normal use and as all four tyres are still on the wheels, they would have to come up with a plausible reason for the nuts being retightened since they did them. I have done a fair bit of business there so the reaction will be interesting.
I suspect they would know that they tighten wheels nuts up very tight - it would be the setting on their rattle guns and all cars would be getting the same treatment. I wouldn't be surprised if other owners have come back and asked them to release the nuts because they couldn't do so themselves.
Thats why i hang around when other people are changing my tyres, i make them put them on with a wheel brace, none ever argue once you've asked them, they just do it.
If they don't wanna do anything about it, blow up and cause a scene, that can sometimes help.
ive had the same problem with an XE Ghia i once bought.
bent every tyre brace i owned, not the cheap nasty ones either.
took it to my local mechanic to have a shot at it, the compressor wouldnt budge them, the breaker bar wouldnt budge them, the breaker bar with a 1m extention still wouldnt break them but a 2 meter extention with BOTH of us hanging from it finally got them loose.
good to know your rims cant get stolen though.
I had the same after i got a set of rims from the tyre factory. Nearly blew my ass out trying to get them undone with a 1m extension on the end of my brace and when i got 1 of them undone i fell over and smashed my head on the concrete. Went back to them and went off my nut. Now the store i went to is out of business lol
Chuck Norris destroyed the periodic table, because he only recognizes the element of surprise
I had them overtighten and at times 3 out of 5 are finger tight, there was even one acasion when I took my pontiac in with left hand thread they snapped my wheel studs
yep its happend to me a few times, one beaurepairs did it to my old vb even myself and a friend jumping on a breaker bar together couldnt undo them i ended up going back and asking wtf they where trying to do and they undid them and also the dumb ****s broke 6 studs grrrrrrrrrrrrrr wutch they repaiced,
Car theives should be treated just like horse theives and cattle rustlers in the days of the wild west... Hang them!
Don't be stupid. Power isn't measured by the size of your tacho
I tried changing the wheels on my trailer about a month back....was gonna chuck some 17" calais internationals on it and yeah I just about popped a poo valve trying to undo one nut. Ended up getting the breaker bar out, and used an old 3m section of steel tubing over the end.....flexed around a bit but got it pretty easy lol.....then found out the 17's wouldn't fit lol.

i wonder how many wheel studs they shear off using the rattle gun. surely that alone would make it worthwhile for them to spend the extra couple of seconds using a wheel brace to do them up in the shop.
I've had it from Jax and Beaus. I've also had the opposite from Beaus... I had to retighten about 6 nuts because I could undo them by hand.
Also, edit to thread title so people know what it is about before them come in here![]()
I had same problem when i had a barina, But it was caused by water seizing the threads up, nothing would undo them, they ended up having to break the studs to get them of, So they put a tiny bit of grease on the threads and never happened again.
I should always be told each nut should be as tight as you can do it up with a wheel brace
