Its becoming more and more common and i dont understand why!!
fair enough, there are some areas where 40 and 50 zones are appropriate but theyre everywhere now! and in the most rediculous places!!
Up the road from my house is a high school which is a 40 zone permenantly... but it goes a block further!! why!??!?
Lygon street > the majority of lygon street (appart from the cemetary) is 40 kms.... now MAYBEEE thats ok for the main part with all the restraunts, still think 50 is a good speed but anyway... the rest of the road 40 is a joke.. i think its only between 8am and 10pm, but its just st**id. All it does, especially on lygon street, ensures that everyone else just sits up your a** while youre only doing the speed limit
Kings way > used to be 70, is now 60.... far to slow for a 5 lane stretch of road... sometimes it gets pretty busy (peak hour obviously) but when its that busy you cant do 60 anyway!!its just that now when its not busy (most of the time!!) youre stuck doing 60 on such a wide straight road!
Im sure a few of you have some other roads in mind? Its just become an absolute joke... whats next? 40ks for citylink? oh wait... thats down to 70 in some parts anyway![]()
Ahh, a Victorian post and issue.
NB - The 50 thing is a national built-up area default (not NT). I expect the rural default to change too, as it should.
Purchase a hazard-warning triangle for your car to improve the warning given to approaching traffic at both crash scenes and vehicle breakdowns. Keep it in the boot. I suggest Hella Part Number 2901 - $70, OR http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/onl...215554#details. Accepted under AS3790. http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/media...eSafePart4.pdf
Theres a few areas ive been through that go from 90 to 70 back to 90 for no apparent reason, you can bet cops sit at the 70 and book people lol.
The Calder FWY:
A: Is 80KM City outbound from Melton HWY to Calder RWY
B: They have just put an extra lane inbound and outbound between Green Gully Rd and Keilor Park Dr AND lowered the speed limit to 80 along there as well, both ways
The traffic authorities have guidelines for speed limits, so those areas must have met the criteria for lower speed limits.
Might be a pain, but there will be a reason for it. Life goes on, post in the F-OFF thread if you like![]()
Takalvan St in Bundy...most of it is a 60 zone, but there's a part when it goes from 60 to 70, and then back to 60, for no real reason. Then again, I failed my driving test for that once, so I'm probably biased.![]()

80kph for the entire length of the Monash
It's still three lanes, it's still straight, and it's got concrete walls on both sides. Safe as houses.
In brisbane, there are freeways with narrower lanes, worse road quality, more turns and bends, NO stopping lanes (just concrete on each immediate shoulder) and the speed limits on those roads are 100 or 110
I know the Monash is a roadwork zone, but they're not working on the other 40km of itStick signs up where they're working, and let the rest plod along at 90 at least!

I dont have a problem in my area. (Livo, NSW) Hoxton Park Road is 70 k's which is comfy.. Cartwright Ave is 50k which is understandlable, its residential.
Sometimes I think Cowpasture Road is a bit too slow.. It all depends on the traffic flow I guess.
I never listen to the reccommended speed for going around corners and shiz in back streets, 25 is ridiculous when my car can handle it at the limit in all weather conditions.
My street is a major suburban through road servicing one suburbe, but providing a handy shortcut to avoid traffic works, lights and roundabouts. It's a 50kph road, good condition, but has a few serious bends and climbs a hill then descends. It's used by idiots who think the speed limit doesn't apply to them. I deleiberately drive in the street at the posted limit, because I live there and I'm sick of the s*** for brains who think it's their personal speedway. You can bet your bippy I will have someone up my freckle within seconds of starting down the road. Tought titties - the road is suited to the speed limit.
Having said that, I get ticked off having to crawl along the road for two k's to get to the intersection and then get moving properly!

Without knowing the road, I can't give specific criteria, but in general school zones are an obvious example. IIRC there are parts of the Pacific Hwy which go from 70 to 40 for school zones. I think housing density, presence (or not) of barriers, single/dual carriageway (and much more) determine what the posted limit will be.

School zones make sense when we are talking about kindergartens, child care centres and primary schools, but by the time kids reach high school, they should have sufficient road sense to know how to stay away from danger. Having 40 zones near high schools seems like overkill to me.
Sometimes lowering the speed limit during peak hour actually increases the traffic flow, this is part of why there are variable speed limit zones.
The only reason why it's not a shit fight anymore is because of the extra lane they've added. They could have added that lane and left the speed limit at 100km/h. Traffic flows quicker, drivers are happier, less stress on the roads and less danger.
Another one I don't understand is why the West Gate Freeway is 80km/h between the bridge and the tunnel. It's 4 lanes wide and it worked perfectly when it was 100km/h, why change it? I just don't get it.
Did you notice how that happened straight after the crash in the tunnel? I don't know if that was the same tunnel, or what happened, but basically they dropped the speed limit somewhere unrelated because they said it was dangerous in that place to be doing 100, and then the WHOLE section of the westgate between the tunnel and bridge dropped as well. Never seen a crash on that stretch. Ever. That is the most disgusting speed limit I have ever seen. Oh and the Monash as well (wtf?!), but the road is a pile of arse anyway. Grooves straight through all lanes COOL
there's a bunch of permanent 40 zones around schools/local shops in my area that **** me off. everyone probably knows my position on school zones and the benefits of parenting, instead of covering the world in cotton wool.
that aside, 40 k at say 2am through the backstreets? i guess it's cheaper than putting up timed LED signs and if you complain about speed limits you don't care about the children/safety and you're a hoon.
