Spear fishing ftw!!!!

Had my first turn at spear fishing today didnt catch anything myself few mates caught some squid and pike off St lenards near Geelong and i think it has become my new hobby

ive already bought a spear gun and i shall be going more often haha

anyone else know some good places around melbourne to go and what fish have u caught just missed a big squid and flat head saw me as i just about to shoot and dug itself away

any tips would be helpful also

spear fishing is banned around here, and now they want to ban recreational fishing in 3/4 of the local river.

I think my dad will go on a wild shooting rampage if it happens.

Take the ferry over to French Island there are a few good spots around the jetty.
Also try Stoney Point , Mornington and Philip Island

mornington is not bad around the rocks, if you have a boat there is some good spots of phillip island.

also if your up for a hike at same time wilson prom

im not to sure about spots over your side of town

Umm are you sure? Last time I check you could only use a spear for rock lobster, and the restrictions are pretty tight, like no barbs, and no more then 3 prongs. I dont do much spear fishing, but will take the spear with me when I go prawning, has to be the easiest way to get Flounder, have had a few cracks at Flathead, but cant get close enough with a sling, spear gun would be awesome, but I thought they were banned?

im not 100% sure as stated some said they r banned in NSW il have to look into it ive got a spear gun only got one arrow so im ok there haha i no u can cop it if u get caught with undersize fish or over the bag limit but il have to look into it like i said i was told u have 2 have a fishing licence

Yeah, ill be checking it out to(when sober), its been a few years since Ive bothered to check it. But even then I knew/know alot of people that do it, and as stated above, wilsons prom is a good spot.

head west along the great ocean rd. theres a bunch of good spots. phillip island is pretty good too. ive been there a few times. aparrently there are a few sharks about in phillip island. i havent seen one though. you dont need a lisence to spearfish in vico (last time i checked was june 08).

bloody good fun though.

The pier in Mornington is f'n great! but not allowed

Around Schnapper point is not bad but dangerous because of boats flying past alot... there is a little bay behind the Mornington balls club at has some pinkies and what not in there...

Further down Mt Martha way is ok here and there... just a pain to get to the water... and its very hit and miss if you get fish...

I've yet to use my Speargun will use it eventually when i head down the coast to do some snorkelling.I dont use it locally unless i plan on eating my catch.

Got told aswell the only time spearguns are illegal is if you load up the band/s with the gun out of the water.

Il prob have to get a different tip i reckon the one thats on there now is pretty fn big,dont know what the previous owner used it for,Plus it came with 2 pretty short high strength black bands so id say it would have a bit of kick.I just have to get a cable too so i dont lose my shafts.

I allways figured the smaller the actual tip the better it would be for chasing smaller fish (Upto 30cm or so) maybe not the case though as i seen your pics in the other thread & you seem to have done pretty well with it.

Yep... illegal to have them out of the water loaded... there is some other rule about not having them loaded around boats or something... I'm not sure...

I use a hawaiian sling rather than a proper gun... so far have caught more things that my mate with a proper gun :P

My 50 buck has paid itself off in fish already compared to his 250 dollar gun...

lol 2 were from about 10-15ms away from the pier other one was around the rocks lol theres no one there anyway i hope lol i cant judge when im under water

This is the model i have MAKO Attack 2000 with twin powerbands,measuers 100cm from butt of the gun to the end of the gun cylinder,shaft is probably about the same.Mines Black with green handles though.

Yeah... im normally paranoid that I will get a fish thats under size... not like I can exactly throw it back...

Though there is one snook out there swimming around with a barb through it... somehow it managed to wriggle so much a the barb it was caught on dislodged from the spear head and it swam off at a million miles an hours...

Tried to find it but... like looking for a needle in a hay stack.

Poor bugger...

So i can even strap to my leg... and hev it incase i see a fish snorkeling... rather than going out with a big out which means i want to catch fish...

That way if i return empty handed... i can say i was just going to a snorkel...

Yeah theres some nifty little units i've seen on the net,a pistol sized pneaumatic one would be ideal for snorkelling.

yeah... I've never seen anyone useing one of those...

But they are cool... little holster and all...

I'd look like Aqua Rambo with my dive knife on one left and one of those on the other...lol
