    Default Bottled water

A couple of comments got me thinking and i wonder what other people think/do.

There are massive amounts of bottled water sold these days. So much so that a doctor was telling me some people are drinking too much water which takes away too many nutrients.

Also, the amount of energy that goes into making the actual bottle and running the factory is pretty nasty.

I know some places have shit water, ours isn't perfect so we put in a filter and now run it through the fridge dispenser so it is always clear, always available and you can fill a flask of bottle of choice anytime. Sure i'll buy a bottle in a pinch but generally don't need to.

We had a filter at work that took water that could make you vomit and filtered it into water that was perfect so there are some good filters out there are the pretty cost effective.

Anyone got some good reasons for solely using bottled water from the shelf? i just fail to see the need for so many 'new' bottles to be bought and used these days...

My in laws have a fresh water tank, so every weekend my wife visits with our 5 litre containers and fills them up.
Yeah, our water is pretty shit but not as bad as ports water that's for sure! I'll only buy bottled water if i need to which isn't often.

I buy bottled water when im out and about, much more refreshing and healthier than a bottle coke, plus its cold, nothing worse than hot water.
Apart from that we have a sunbeam water chiller, cost s $200 but damn the water is good.

If im heading down to the nets to have a hit, il buy a 2 litre bottle of water. But i wont go out of my way to just buy the water because im thirsty.

As you have said, there is some good filters. We have one here at home, we've had it for a few years, il drink some of the filtered water from time to time.
dont worry, il start a ride thread soon.

unicorn filters under the sink pick up so much crap, i guess it mainly has to do with whats in the pipes. think about the romans using lead pipes , how tasty would that have been. when i was in the ghetto use to buy bottled water as the tap water was more than likely bore water and u could taste the ground in it.

got to the stage i was drinking that much grog i was using the bottled water for my fish tanks, those fish kept living and living, one tetra lived for like 5 to 6 years and another fish the oscar grew to 15 cms and more within a year

Id buy bottled water if i had an old rain tank, i saw a study of older tanks (not the new poly ones) that showed the average lead content was like 10x higher than approved, due to the tank material or the catchment areas poluting the water.

If you ask me, I think its the stuff you bottle yourself, from your own rain water. Mostly because it doesn't cost you a cent (apart from the purchase of the tank, and the bottle), and is better for the environment.

I only drink bottled water now.. Buy 8 slabs 24 - 350ml each. Last the month. Frantelle spring water..

Some will say water all tastes the same. But since i have had almost every water over the past 12 months. I will say they do have a slight difference in taste. And have found the Frantelle is nice to drink.
I used to suck down 2lt diet cokes daily.

I used to work at the factory.

We used to use about 1.2 litres of water to make each 600ml bottle. I found that hilarious!

And thats the bare bottle, no cap, no label, and before its sent to get filled!

I buy bottle water from time to time (only pump), but only when Im out and dont have a bottle already with me. We have a water filter at home, that also chills the water (6 degrees) so I normally drinks atleast two of them a day, but If im doing alot of riding its not uncommon for me to drink near 4 litres lol.
I just refill bottles over and over, but apparently its really bad for you, and you should never refill them, I think its a scam to make more money. My bottles will get sterilised after 2 or 3 uses but thats it.

Glad to hear you are off the coke, but you;d save a fortune (and i won't get started on environmental stuff...) if you kept a slab of those bottles and filled them from a filtered tap at home. a good filter can completely remove all 'town' taste from water.

Used to do the same, got jack of it and had the fridge plumbed in properly.
n2work mentioned the nastiness of tanks and collection in town. we worked around that when they decided to put fleuride in our mains.
Little tank (600lt) collection from our roof, filtered, then run through the dispenser on the fridge door = perfect water and ice on call. Even if it didn't rain all summer the tank should hold up as it is only used for the drinking tap and the odd fishtank cleanout.

I buy a 1.5 litre bottle of water on a monday from the servo, then when it runs out, i use it for the whole week and re fill it over and over again from the water machine at work / home. So basically i just buy it for the bottle.

In parts of Europe they have "water bars" where people come in and drink...water.

They sell "gourmet" water, some of which costs as much as $50 a bottle, to people dumb enough to buy it.

Tap water is better for you (in countries with fluoridated water) and costs about 500 times less than bottled water. The only reason I can see for bottled water is the convenience factor, like minux said if you're out and about and want a cold drink that isn't Coke etc, or if you're going somewhere tap water isn't available.

Only bottled water that has any merit in your home is carbonated water, if you're into that kind of thing.

Studies I have read have said tap water is in fact worse for you. Especially fluoridated water.

I only buy bottled water if I am out and about. If I am off to a all day event, I buy one or 1.5 or 2litre bottles from the supermarket, freeze it over night and take it with me.

At home I drink tap water.

I don't think Ive ever bought a bottle of water for myself, I'd rather spend my money on a redballs, Gatorade or icebreak. I just wait until I get to work for chilled water or home.

    I'd love to see them!

Seriously, there is a mountain of evidence showing a dramatic increase in dental health which has been attributed to the introduction of fluoride in water supplies. I've yet to hear a substantiated theory to suggest otherwise.

In fact I recall reading a report from VicHealth a couple of years ago on the topic, where they'd recorded something like 30% less dental issues in children living in areas with fluoridated water supplies, compared to those without. There are tons of others saying similar things.

There is a legitimate concern about the effects of too much fluoride (fluorosis), but the levels we have here are well below the safe limits unless you like to snack on toothpaste

I never buy bottled water. I carry a 1 litre sports water bottle in my car all the time, fill it up every time I go out - and if I need a top-up while I'm out on the road, I usually ask a gentleman at a servo if he has a drinking tap, and they're always happy to fill it up for me.

Not a huge fan of soft drink either. It's good once in a while with a meal, when I eat junk once a week - but other than that, it's just tap water all the way. I don't care what any studies say about detremental effects of tap water yada yada yada - there are people out there in countries around the world drinking some truly nasty stuff. I'm glad for what we have, and I'll keep drinking it 'till people around me start dropping like flies.

Not all of that will be going to charity though, if you drank it from the tap, then donated the difference directly to charity you'd be having a much greater effect.
