With the oil companies slowly and gradually putting the squeeze on the world with the demand (car numbers increasing) on diminishing oil supplies, I think its clear that our generation may be the last to enjoy big powerful cars. If it wasn’t for the Global economic crisis, look at what was happening to oil/petrol prices. A barrel of oil got up to $160.00, and was climbing EVERY day by a few dollars. Look at whats happening now, the price is very slowly creeping up to pre GEC prices again. $1.28.9 today
All this hybrid/hydrogen/electric debate started going into overdrive (excuse the pun). How many more years before the traditional big aussie family/performance car will not be sustainable? 10 years max? we can drive what we have now, big cars with big engines/grunt, for a little while now. Our grandkids will be driving prius/smart car/hydrogen eco friendly type cars. I don’t know how these eco friendly type cars will be able to tow boats or caravans (can you imagine reversing an electric car or prius into a boat ramp….)
Do you think your grandkids will be driving 1800KG cars with 4-6 litre engines….dont think so.
Enjoy your big powerful cars now while you can, we may be the last to do so.

There is a reason why Commodore is number 1 since 1979. Its the best Aussie car. I loved my VL and I love my VE. I cant help it.
i found it funny/frustrating to hear that because of the falling price of oil, they cut production to artificially create demand and increase prices. it might be a simplistic view but to me it just seems to be greed, can anyone rationally explain it economically?
I think in the coming years opec will be gone, I mean, we have enough oil to last us years, we shouldnt be pooling it.

what about the new hydrogen car honda just introduced with the same specs as a normal family saloon.[/QUOTE]
mate im not tryng to win the Purlitzer prize! When a hydrodgen car is available at a price to a person that doesnt have the surname 'GATES', then hopefully it will be a realistic alternative.
what was the price honda Quoted?

Eco friendly cars, or cars with electric motors will do very well for towing.
Trains seem to cope alright.
Not everything powerful is fuelled by petrol or diesel.
I remember back in the early 80s everone was worried because we were told that world oil supplies would dry up in about 10 years. The oil companies are telling us the same crap now and using it as an excuse to jack up the price of fuel. I believe the only reason we have stuck with petrol and diesel powered vehicles is because the rich oil companies have too much influence on our governments and wont allow us to use alternative fuels. There was a mechanical engineer down here that was running his Buick on hydrogen back in the 60s but the RTA would not allow him to drive it on the road and police threatened to jail him if he continued testing it on the road. Diesel engines were originally designed to run on vegetable oil but they were redesigned to run on diesel oil because it was a leftover product in the process of distilling petrol and the fuel companies needed to find a use for their diesel oil.
There was a company in Melbourne that was converting cars to run on steam that could out accelerate any petrol engined vehicle around at the time, and they only shut down about 25 years ago.
Earth run out of oil, yeah right. This world would run out of oxygen first, so don't worry the human race will die first.
Come on, you really think the oil was only made once.
Oil has to be made from somewhere, so there are new supplies being made somewhere underground somewhere.
The oil companies are finding better ways of detecting as the years go on.
I like to think Mad Max will become a reality, but I don't think so.
Only way we will be in trouble, if someone dominates the world and takes control over the world's oil supplies.
Yours Kindly,
Jim
+ 1 for worst thread ever.
My V8 is better than my V6/straight 6 on fuel for the same era, which filters through to late models aswell. Keep in mind the people who do this type of research have grown up with fuel sucking carbied V8s, not the fuel efficient EFI ones of the last 20 years!

Thats not a flaming! And don't take it to heart, its not the worst thread ever, we already voted on that in the polls. It was just an internet figure of speach
But a search would have shown this topic has already been covered many times!
Either way, as i said, most people who think 'big V8s' suck fuel are the ones who grew up with the likes of original monaro's and GTs, which, in todays day, do suck the fuel.

I get around 9.3 - 9.7 the majority of the time on my NA V6 ecotec, sometimes it's in the low 8's but with "spritied" acceleration its in the nines :P
thats better then my girlfriends 4 banger 96 lancer with a carby and better then her mothers getz that she bought brand new last year, well I think it's better then her mother car, it sounds better
anywho all my car has on it is pacemakers, a standard size (2 1/4) lukey performance exhaust and a high flow panel filter with a stock super charger cool air intake, along with a good old tune to suit.
In june when I supercharge the car "spirited" acceleration might just be too much for me, as the car allready has more then enough power for road use, but if you think i'm not going to charge her, you can go eat a big one :P even if it's only on for a few months I want it out of my system while i'm young, no point being 70 with a charger and hooning around mistaking brakes for accelorators and mowing people down.
Thats pretty good for a V6. Havn't seen anyone say they get under 10L/100k's with one.
I average that city driving, highway is in the 7s!

One thing is for sure, i grew up with the words GTHO/XU1/RT 6 PACK/GTS and i went to adelaide international raceway (way before clipsal 500!) to watch these cars race (my brothers took me) when i was 8 years old. Most of my uncles have been buying american cars since the 60's. My wedding car was a THUNDERBIRD 390CI V8. another uncle had a Cadillac Eldorado with a 472CI v8. another uncle had a Lincoln Continental that had well over 400CI (dont know that one eaxctly). the point i was trying to make was my whole life i been surrounded by big powerful/thirsty cars, but as you guys have pointed out, technology now is squeezing more grunt out of big cars while using less juice. the top speed of an SV6 is 230kph....let alone 6 litre v8, while getting great economy at other end of the scale.
i never had a true performance car but i will try to hang onto my traditional aussie full sized cars for as long as possible.

You basically answered our own question!
You've grown up with the oldschool carby fed cars which use alot of fuel driving normally, let alone having fun!
Times have changed, GM have Cylinder deactivation just around the corner Technologu already exists, but they havn't utilised it here, pretty sure theres a thread discussing why) which just adds to the pro's of having a powerful car!

There's tons of people on this forum running 6-7l /100 on the highway in VN/P V6s, the 5 litre can not match the v6's ecconomy all things being fair and equal it's allways about (at least) a litre behind
