Default automated features that annoy you?

My pet hate is the windscreen wiper/washer setup that manufacturers including Holden have given us.

If you want to put water on the screen the wipers are enacted too, seems good in theory, but when the screen has dirt/dust all over it, the wipers drag across it before most of it has had a chance to get wet......great way to scratch the screen.

Result, i drive around with a dirty screen until i can get to a servo and wash it off there manually.
What do I want: just isolate the washer fuction from the wipers.....not too hard!
What does the automation achieve here? saves us from the onerous task of switching on the wipers or squirting the screen and then crashing because we were too stupid to clear the screen so we could see.

its not that hard. hook up a direct button to the washer motor. and mount the button in easy reach. spray for as long as you hold the button on.

and then turn on your wipers.

some things manufactures just dont think about.

    hence why we modify cars

Thanks Hadyn, I wasnt asking for a fix(if there is someway of fooling the current control, yes Id like to hear about it), but no Id rather not go adding more controls to the car.....just venting about the problem of manufacturers automating things and making life more difficult.....and hoping that perhaps through this forum that people will whinge and the problem gets back to the manufacturer.

I think it was the HX range where they decided to cam the wiper switch so that activating the squirter would also put the wipers on, before that it was just a simple button! This was an easy one to beat, just remove the knob and cut the cam off, but on a current commodore, fooling the ecu is a bit beyond me.

I'd never thought about that before but I can see what you mean about scratching the glass. I don't mind the wiper coming on. I think its great but maybe if there was half a second longer delay to get more water on the windscreen that would be handy.

I hate telephone automation. I do not appreciate talking to computers. So now I just swear at them until they go to an operator. Seriously, the idiots who thought of this were just that...idiots.

There is a cost argument in it, and that the overall level of service becomes more equal.

Who gives a **** about cost? The level of service is non existant. I do not call talking to a computer a service.

Well whoever you're calling, they aren't going to absorb the cost, they're going to pass it back to you through their product/service, so in the end you will care about it.

As for the service, you can mince words but it's still providing you with a service. It might mean that for the cost of a call centre with 10 people in, who can take maybe 200 calls an hour, with average satisfaction of 7/10 (guess?) they can buy a computer which can handle 2000 calls with a average satisfaction of 2/10. Overall though computer wins 4000 satisfaction points vs 1400 for real people. That's how these things often get costed

Just keep mashing the hash button. Unless of course you want the added stress relief of the abuse.

LMAO, mrs and I deliberately do NOT walk up them just to **** people off who are rushing about. Its hilarious hearing people mutter under their breath all sorts of things. Even funnier when you get to the end they storm through so you stick your foot out.

Not so. The HD had a button in the centre of the wiper switch. When you pressed the button, an internal mechanism turned the wiper switch to low speed. In those days, the washer was a pump and cam setup, with the pump shooting about 12 separate shots of water on the screen, but the wiper was activated as soon as the washers were.

There would be people layed at the steps to the 3rd floor crying all over the city :P my wife and I nnnever walk on escalators like Minux, you need two people to block them off properly but it's nice to teach people how to relax and slow down a bit

I don't like electric windows. It's a waste of materials, money and effort, it ruins the planet more for no reason at all and makes people fatter which give me less fine butts to look at. So yes the two major problems with the Earth right now are caused by electric windows
