Yes, it would be true that some performance marks like the hsvs and even wrx are higher targets with thieves, however, it would appear that most of the heavy cost of insurance for the typical car is related to the cost of fixing/replacing them after crashes, given the high cost of comprehensive insurance relative to just simple third party fire and theft which is not terribly different if the car is a v8 or a 6cyl.

What difference would the drive configuration make in that situation?

    very well said.

To the op - chances are you can manipulate stats to reflect whatever you want them to say - but in reality - you have a 50/50 chance of crashing regardless of what car you drive. i.e. you are either going to have a crash, or you're not. - and if you DO crash, it's going to either be your fault, or someone else's...

On the street, I don't really see a relationship between how powerful/fast a car is and how likely you are to crash it. - I do, however, see a link between how keen your right foot is, and the approach you take to driving vs how likely you are to crash.

If you're more inclined to do stupid stuff, at stupid times, in stupid places, and exceed your abilities as a driver - then you have a much higher chance of crashing a car than if you consistently drive sensibly and carefully, regardless of how many cylinders, turbos, superchargers or subs you have.

Cbf readin this whole thread but here is my view.

It's not car's that are dangerous. It's the people driving them.

I can get my 1.8L 1989 BMW to 180kmph (on a track) and it's gonna hurt just the same wrapping it around a tree as it would be in a v8...

Only difference is it would sound better in a v8

    What's that mantra...

Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the back of your car
Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of your car
Horsepower is how hard you hit the wall
Torque is how far you take the wall with you

OH EM GEE! Maybe if they build really really powerful cars with metric ****tons of torque and a really strong chassis, it will be safer hitting things at high speed because you will just take the tree with you instead!

^^^ Lol... I like that... so in my case it would be hitting the wall with the front on my car... not very hard but not taking the wall with me anywhere either.

cheers people, there was some good points on either side but i do realise that it is completely in the hands of the driver and how good a driver u are will depend on if u crash!

and if anyone cares i want a 5L because nothing can beat that delicious sexy grumble she makes

... that's right, so you need to go get a 5L and prove to your parents that you're right by not crashing. - and everyone is a winner!

Don't know about the raw numbers but I will say that things can get way out of hand much faster with a 5 litre compared to it's V6 counterpart. Things get even worse when you look at a Gen III or later. Of course you can smash anything if you try hard enough.

FWIW the VE is $861 to insure inc cover for work (raises the premium somewhat).

Get a 5L VP Calais, then compare the power to weight with a VN Exec V6, and it wouldn't be much different!

Not to mention a stock Auto 5L is pretty 'slugish' anyway.

In stock form you probably have a point. It's not hard/expensive to get the 5 litre going a whole lot better though (which is why most people buy them).

He said he just wants the sound. Which wouldn't add much power (if any if its a single 3in or something)
