Has anyone here traced their family tree??
My Ma's brother in law has.. turned out quite interesting.
As my Ma left my Father when I was 5, I basically know nothing about him or his side of the family. I have spoken to my Father's sister who didn't really want much to do with me, and said my Father was disowned by the family at a very young age....Haha. I know just a few names.
I started searching over the net a few years back, to find that everything cost a fortune to search. Has anyone on here found any good, free websites that let you search your family geneology??
I think I may have found a relative, with the same surname as me (Patmore) who's family also originated from Tassie, as my Father did.. His Father has researched the family tree or say he says, and will be sending it my way soon. He tells me that Patmore's were sent to Tassie from England for being PIRATES!! Arrr me matey!! no wonder i fell in love with pirates of the caribbean...![]()

My mums pretty heavy into those kinds of things, turns out her side of the family is Jewish German and packed up and headed over here back in the day. I think there is Scottish coming into that side as well as we seem to have a family crest and the pattern whatever that's called.
Old boys side on the other hand is full German as far as I can remember. I don't think mum used the net much because a lot of the results were looking shifty.
So last time she went to Brisbane she found a place that looked into it. There's probably one in most capital cities.
Okay cool.. When my Uncle did it, (Ma's brother in law) he had alot of family to help him out and give stories, names and people to see etc..
All I have is my last name, and my old man's brother's name, and of course his missus but they're separated now anyhoo and she doesn't want anything to do with us!
I was always told my Father had aboriginal in him by my Ma... But he had blue eyes and blonde hair, and ahh it's all very confusing when no one wants to help and your credit card is maxxed out!!
My family tree is a cactus, its full of little pricks.
I fell out of the sky, Mr.Bean stylez.
Ummm free sites, for your family name origins, try Coats of Arms (Family Crests) & Surname Histories
They don't tell you TOO much, but enough to give you a broad idea of where things started. Most of the time, surnames were originally derived from where someone was from, or what they did etc. etc.
As my name suggests, my predecessors were in service to royal knights around the time of The Battle of Normandy. Kinda explains/goes along with my love of all things medieval, and my axe fetish
Also, try onegreatfamilytree.com
Dunno if I got that right, I think it's a paysite though.
Happy researching mate.
i think you can search through birth certificates for free, although it gets difficult when they're stored in different cities.
Personelly what family I dont know, I dont want to know. Yeah I have cousins of cousins out there some where, but MY FAMILY are the people who have been by my side my whole life.
But if you want to, be prepared to get more then you bargain for. A couple of years ago I researched my friends "family" (she wanted to research aswell) as she knew very little and there were to many secrets from the family she lived with. I found out alot more then I ever wanted to, and left it at that, didnt even tell the friend.
Start with one person, and search along, electrol commision, internet (google, facebook, myspace etc AND Dating sites, pretty much anywhere someone has a personel profile). Registry of births deaths and marriages, you can check the War Vets list aswell if looking for an older family member. Talk to people, even if its a long shot, its worth it if you want to know more, even if they just give you one piece to your puzzle.
Good luck with it.
I know there is a program at Officeworks that is something to do with the "family tree"
I'll chase it up for you though as i'ma be there tomorrow
all english/scottish/irish convicts. noone anywhere in my family line is from anywhere else lol
I don't have to do my family history, someone has already done it and even published it into a book. It isn't my direct family, but there is a fair chuck of it.

Not much is known about my mothers family, they come from the north of Italy.
My father is German and my surname dates back to 1200, we have a family crest. His family were a big group of industrialists, mining/civil engineers, mine managers and navy personel and were a quite prominent family in west Germany.
My great grandfather was a major general for Germany in WWI, and my grandfather was a U-Boat commander in WWII. He received the First Class Iron Cross and later the Second Class Iron Cross.
One of our relatives in the USA actually comissioned a research project on my father's family about 20 years ago. I might have to dig it out again, its about 15 pages long.
I've done mine back to 1770. The best way to do it is contact your local history house like there should one run by a few oldies locally or in the area you know your family lived and go from there. At mine they even had old letters from unknown members of my family from Melbourne wanting to know the same things and we got in touch with them. Found out a good deal of family secrets toowhich is the main reason all the history was lost as the older members of my family had just gone to the grave with it
not more bloody secrets....
yeh found out through rellies a couple of years ago at a family reunion, ancestors from Cork in the south of Ireland, family name: Rooney (nannas maiden name), the tree went back a few centuary's or something like that, went a long way back i know that. to a
a couple of them came out here on there own in the middle to late 1800's.
