I have three dogs, all bitsers. A Corgi/Blue Healer cross, a Ridgeback/Rotwiler cross and a Labradore/Jack Russell cross.
A couple of years ago the Corgi Cross had massive problems (pancrasititis), and the vet recomended I don't use commercial food. So now I cook their food.

I use 1 KG of roo mince or steak mince (for dogs - from Aldis), six cups of rice, and about 1/2 kg of mixed vegetables or two boxes of frozen spinach. I boil the meat and rice together till the rice is almost cooked (aldente) and the meat is fully cooked. I add the veggies at the end so they are still a bit raw.

I give the dogs this in the evenings, dry dog food in the mornings and raw bones on the weekends. Just make sure you don't over-feed the dog.

    Happy doghood!

Ive got a 1 year old black lab and i make his food. rice chicken and vegetables and sometimes the dry food with it. I dont like the pal food and that stuff. too much unnatural shit in it and i beleive it was responsible for my old dogs death.

I also have 3 dogs & feed my dogs very similar to you, plus they get a tonne of left overs from the dinner table...(minus foods like onion etc)

Thats for 2 of them my 3rd dog requires a little more food prep cause she's pretty old & only has half her teeth left lol.

Before we got my dog put down about 3 months ago, she got very ill, and would not eat her usual sausage meat stuff. And she actually started eating pal for a while (even though we didn't want to give it to her and she hated it when she was younger) and she scoffed that down.

But I ended up making a batch of what you said, it ended up being rice and veges with some beef stock that I had to throw out, some meat, and I actually put some kfc bones in there while it cooked. (took the bones out before she ate it)

And she ate that food so fast, she actually came inside afterwards looking happy so I gave her some more.

So yeah, with my next dog, mince/rice and frozen veges all the way.

I cant say this is the right way 2 do things but it certainly did the trick with my dog wen she was a pup, Staffi x blue heeler. she was like ur dog ate like there was no tomorrow and ate as if she was choking while taking in more food so we decided 2 just keep feeding her food till she was sick, funny enough she ate so much she spewed up and eva since that day shes never scoffed her food or gone food crazy.

She normally gets those proto dog rolls, some tin food and bickys 2gether, every now n then id give her chicken necks 2 clean her teeth and somtimes cook up some chicken mince and rice with mixed vegies just 4 variety.

So do you give him a kg of chicken necks or you mean he could eat a kg of chicken necks? If you're giving him a kg and wants more, it's not because he's hungry. He's just a guts.

If anyone gives their dog dry food, make sure it's made from real meat. Nearly all dry dog food on the shelf is made from grain and mashed crap. Our dogs get Supa Coat dry dog food which is made from real meat. Half a cup of dry dog food and large tablespoon of boiled rice for breakfast and dinner. Yummy! Mind you they're maltese X

I got 2 HUSKIES one eats like a horse and the other is fussy, i feed them necks, lamb off cuts and dry biscuits. Tin food is no good its just full of water, too get their vitamins dry biscuits are the best and not supermarkert brand either no good full of cereal.

Also if you raise the dogs bowl up from off the ground to level with his face youll find they dont scoff up their food.

good for thier teeth are pig ears and marrow bones my vet said my dogs have excellent teeth because of the necks and bones! but remeber to worm your dog well and regulary to ensure they dont get worms from the meat!

Mines a German Shepard X Rottweiler, I feed her Science Diet Senior Large Breed, costs a mint but shes worth it. Also happy that is has glucosimine, as she has a bit of arthritis from when she fractured her leg when she was younger.

Our 7 yr old husky gets raw meaty bones usually chickenwings or necks, some times lamb, beef, roo. As for quantity she gets whatever fits into a small ziplok bag, usually 3-4wings. I'll cook up vegies and rice for her ocassionally. The only commercial food she gets is a handful of supercoat dry food and the occasional dog treat but we don't buy canned crap. Sometimes we'll crack an egg into her dry food and she loves it! Shes in great health, never had a problem with her, has a beautiful coat and the raw bones keep hr teeth nice and clean.

My dog gets 2/3 of a cup of dry food. On a special diet which helped her lose some weight. Dr. Harry something something.

We were feeding her about a quarter of a tin of pal and a quarter of a cup of dry (pal) food a night but that was just overindulging her. It's equivelent to eating a Big Mac every night for us.

These are our family dogs, both get looked after wayyy to well by my sister ( everynow and again she cooks especially for them) they get a variety of good quality dryfood, chicken necks, some table scraps. they seem to be happy, although Gus (staffy purebred) is very fussy because my sis used to spoil him as a pup and jock (jack russel cross) will eat anything lol. tonights table scraps : chicken breast fillets!
