Since we don't have a Food and Cooking forum (would be a bit weird on a Commodore message board) I figured this is the best place to post this.
I have to know, what's the deal with eggs? When they hit the supermarket they come in refrigerated, then when they go out they go on the shelf without refrigeration (except for large supermarkets with way too much room). We buy them, take them home and usually put them in the refrigerator (it even has a labelled compartment to store them).
Do they really need to be refrigerated? Do they get refrigerated at the supermarket because they're from China? Apparently in other countries they're sold on the shelf?
I've also heard about some places overseas that sell eggs hard-boiled, apparently pretty good for picnics.
I don't know why I've got eggs on my mind today...
At Safeway they come in on the dairy load, most popular is definitely Homebrand 12pk
i've never been to a shop were the eggs are kept refridgerated and i never put my eggs in the fridge always left on the bench
If its got Wheels or Boobs its gonna cost ya money
I've got another egg related question, just wtf was the first person who ate an egg thinking? I mean seriously, you see something pop out of a chickens arse and not knowing any better would you think yum I'm going to eat that?
Nah we dont store any on capping at my store. Our eggs are stored in a cold shelf much like the yoghurt. Anything that isnt on the shelf is in the fridge in the back with the milk.
i also have another egg question
what came first chicken or the egg ?
Eureka styles!
Eggs WILL last longer in the fridge. That is the difference.
In a decent shop they will only sit on the shelf 1 or 2 days, but when you get home they might sit in your fridge 3 weeks..
We don't temp check the eggs but sometimes I do include them in weight and measures book.
Julie I wonder that about nearly everything we eat but I guess it's all part of evolution, if we didn't eat and our ancient ancestors didn't eat we wouldn't be here (unless you believe in creationism - in which case God said to eat them)
Eureka they evolved from something else.

dunno man, i never seen an egg with a date on it !!!
All i know is when you buy your homebrand eggs FTW, put them in the fridge at home, that way they be tastier when you want to eat em. Did you know that when you crack an egg into the pan if the white stays in a tight circle its good and if it flows everywhere like water its old !!! ... I read an article in choice about eggs LOL. and yes , they agree home brand FTW
Another what type of eggs do people prefer. Me personally i cant stand battery laid eggs (or whatever they call them) I think free range are way too expensive but they taste better i usually choose barn laid or free range.
If people stopped buying the cheap shit ones the others would become cheaper as demend grows for them.

for the record our supermarket has them on the shelf and we put them in the fridge
wtf were you thinking when you typed this? LOL
ok i work for woolies...and them come in our fridge load..in a fridge truck then into a cool room...and then are packed into a fridge on the shop lol..we used to put them on shelves in longlife...but now we have double amount of fridges cus our store has been refitted and the eggs are now planogrammed into the fridge section next to the milk..so i dunno wat the go is..and we put eggs in the fridge at home..i guess they keep longer or fresher??
I only buy free range, from the cold section of my local s/market & i allways leave them in the fridge.

well here is an interesting fact, eggs will last longer if they are not washed before sale, they can last 3 months out of a fridge in under 20 degree heat. there is a taste difference between battery and free range. and plus whinging about red dots in the yokes? ha think of them as high protein eggs (they are better for you). nothign wrong with the dots . we have quite a few chickens producing more than 3 dozen eggs every 2 days and our egg fridge is bursting at the seems. Only in the fridge to keep the rats at bay.
A Mate refuses to eat any eggs unless its ours as he says the taste is alot better, we feed them normal pellets mixed with bird seed and about 8 crates of lettuce leaves a week. you taste of what u eat
I have argued this one with health inspectors for ages, At work (chef) we have to according to HACCAP keep them in the fridge, but coles woolies and the like can keep them on the shelf.
Best answer I have got so far is that because the shopping centrers are all maintained at a constant 21 to 24 degrees with little or no fluctuation and they rotate there eggs on a weekly basis they do not need to be refrigerated.
As for eggs in general, they should be refrigerated to keep down risk of them being contaminated, because the shell is pourus, they can be contaminated with micro bactirea and disease!
Eggs should also be stored in an area away from meats and seafood, and not near strong smelling objects as they can take on other smells through there membranes!
