    Default Laser eye procedure...

The time has come to set the gears in motion to get my eyes done. I have a mild prescription and while i've had success with contacts I'm pretty well sick of dealing with them and paying for them.

Has anyone here had the procedure done? More interested in people close to you rather than your cousin's mate's ex girlfriend who got an infection and died from the procedure.....

    Anyone....

Isnt this procedure only good for a certain amount of time then you are back where you started?I may be thinking of something else though.

your eyes deteriorate anywhere between 40 and death naturally because of age - usually lose your near vision. I'll be getting my distance back which may go again with age but may also be permanent. At least i'll score a good 20 years out of it.
The procedure itself usually does not send your eyes back to where they were so i'm not sure what you are talking about.

Both my parents have had it done after wearing glasses for about 40 years .They both had the left eye done first then the right eyes later as recomended .
The procedure is not painful just a bit uncomfortable . I was thinking about getting it done but was told it wouldn't work because i am long sighted.

i somewhat looked into this around 10 years ago.
sounds good till you get to the part where they cut the lense off your eye while your awake and seeing it happen.
i think they glue it back on now instead of stitches.

This may have all changed but it was enough to put me off and just be happy with glasses for the rest of my life.

from what i have read it is still done that way in some cases. the eye is numbed and held open. there's little to no pain during the procedure and really only discomfort for a while after depending in what's been done.
I can't stand glasses and they get in the way of nearly everything i do that i enjoy and i'm sick of contacts.
No way i could live my life out with glasses - miss out on too much fun stuff!

    hey vlv8vic.

my mum had it done a few years ago at a guess at vista eye clinic. apparantely they were the best, and had the best technology machines and equipment at the time, i dont know if this is the case now? i know they were the dearest at the time, but in this type of thing, you need a quality job and cost cutting is not an option.

she no longer has glasses, or contact lenses, or anything at all! only thing she finds is she does need sunglasses every time she drives anywhere for the glare, her eye's are now a lot more sceptable to any sunlight.

but she's very happy with the whole procedure, and has the video showing it done and everything. she's recommended a lot of people they're since, and they'll all been more than happy too

anyway, you know of me and my family, and i only live bout 20km from you, so you could always come and have a chat to her in person about it, and get the details and discount card for vista if you were keen.

pm me if you need more details.

i wear contacts. they are better than glasses, but i find them annoying sometimes especially when theres an irritant under the lens (working with dust doesnt help this cause).

id seriously consider laser eye surgery.. what sorta cost is involved in it? i presume a fair bit?

Have heard one of the things to take into consideration is your age, the earlier in if you have it the less chance of having it successfully re-done in the future should your vision get any worse. As they are cutting and removing tissue that can't be done over and over. It may have changed since I heard that, but a mate same age as me had it done years ago and never looked back. I have never tried contacts, but should really get off my ass one of these days and give them a go.

I looked into it just over a year ago. I've had bad eyes since I was born, but got burnt, and managed to burn my eyes (not to bad) but my eye sight got worse.
I went and got all the tests done, and they said it was up to me. They explained that it would most likely need redoing every 10 years, and they dont recommend it for young people (I was 16 or 17 at the time). I added up the costs, the benefits and risks and decided against it. At the epworth it was something 10 grand an eye from memory, which is not an expense I want every 10 years lol.
I've always refused to wear glasses, never liked them, I got those day and night contacts and never looked back. They stay in for a month at a time, using drops every day, or every few day makes them more comfortable. Ive managed two infections since having them which is painful, but if your careful you wont get them, I take mine out every two weeks, and wash them, still changed once a month though. And since have contacts I know how good it is to see properly so now wear glasses on the times Im not wearing contacts. Ive certainly never looked back, but at 60 bux a month its still costly.

Thanks for that, i missed your reply first look through. Your story is what i am generally hearing and i can handle being uncomfortable for a bit.

Yeah you are wide awake. I downloaded a vid and they pretty much tape your eye open, wack a little device in to keep it open then give it a bit of laser. only seems to take a couple of mins per eye. I wish i knew where i got the vid now. I'll grab a link when i'm on the other computer.

Thanks mate i'll cruise out sometime if i get cold feet about the whole thing.

Between 2-3k per eye. But i've read of it costing up to 10k to have done. Mine isn't the most serious degree of loss so hope it's the lower end of the cost scale.

Yeah i wear the same ones at the moment but i take them out daily. 3 years without infection but there have been times i've had to take them out because i just couldn't seem to beat the dust or whatever i had in there, maybe just irritation and slight swelling as i tend to get hayfever pretty bad too.
Glasses probably annoy me most because i'm not used to wearing them now. I have presription sunnies which helps with the glare issues but when i swim or kayak or the odd surf i always worry that I'll lose a lense and not be able to drive home. Not the sort of thing you keep spare in the car!
While my sight is only -1.25 or so i'm still not comfortable driving without something to help me, just habit now that without contacts i don't seem to be able to judge distances or drive defensively without concern.

Anyway I have booked into Medownick a bit after Easter - being a fair way from Melb I thought i'd wait to do it when i had other reasons to head up that way. I'll most likely check out one or two other places as well, it can't hurt to get more than one test session/opinion.

My father had it done maybe 5 years ago - he used to wear glasses all the time and after that he hasn't had to wear them at all. He was about 44 when it was done. They said it'll eventually go back to how it was though.

Naturally with his age his eyes will deteriorate. The procedure doesn't reverse itself though.

AIES Lasik Video i think is the vid link.

i have lots of problems with my eyes, vision isn't too bad but i do have glasses that clear everything up when i wear them. i've got severe dry eye problems like you wouldn't believe, and while researching lasik i found out that you should never undergo this type of procedure if you regularly get dry eyes. it will most likely amplify your problem. sometimes even if you've never had dry eyes, laser eye surgery can induce a very bad dose of dry eye syndrome that sometimes never goes away. having dry eyes is the worst thing that's ever happened to me in my life so i will never ever get laser eye surgery, no matter how much my vision deteriorates.
