Nope, but i just joined the CFA, start training in April alsoI'm actually really excited and looking forward to it. Dave (weedo_86) is a CFA member who was at the recent fires, i'm sure he can throw down some details on training, i'd say the CFA and SES training are pretty much the same.
Ummm i'm not sure which one it's considered as, i'd say it's the FTG one, turn left off Burwood highway where Blockbuster is across from the Honda bike dealership and follow that road up.
Yeah, SES and CFA will fight together if there is a big fire etc (like our recent ones down here in Vic, there was CFA, SES and fire fighters from interstate AND overseas).
Training for the CFA goes for 6 months before they start calling on you i was told by them. Training should be great fun! I'm really excited about it.
CFA were fighting the bushfires...... Not all of that was private property was it?
No, that's why the DSE were fighting them as well.
I don't think it's the SES' charter to fight fires.
They respond to storms/floods/etc.
Yeah but CFA didn't JUST fight the ones on private property. That's what i was referring to![]()
Dave could probably confirm.
Either way, it's not a major issue![]()
From memory the DSE has power over government land such as nature parks. BUT they work hand in had with CFA and have the right to fight along side them. The CFA cannot take over a DSE fire without permission and i believe they cannot attend a DSE fire unless called upon. Its been a couple of years since iv been with CFA but thats how i remember it.
Also, i dont think the SES do any fire fighting. Pakenham CFA and SES work together for rescue. But i think thats it.
That's great, let's not turn it into the usual JC debate on who knows more about what.
I wanna hear from Dave about the training etc they put you through in the CFA, because i cant wait to start it!
Don't get defensive all, Cobez. It wasn't a pissing contest. Classified Calais has added some good info.
It's an internet forum. We've a right to add our thoughts to the thread. The original poster asked about the contents of the training programme. Understanding what the SES actually do is probably key to answering the question.
If you don't like the discussion then vacate the thread.
ses do not fight the fires they are there for support as in lighting staging storm damage etc.
tommo was right dse take control of the fires on public land cfa is more private but they do work together (most of the time), and cfa is called in to fires on public land when the dse need a hand.
back to the original question, ses up there would most likly be the same as down here, responding to storm, flood damage. support at the fires but they also respond road accident rescue units to regional areas for the towns with out a cfa or mfb rescue. you can learn all you want from the books but the practical experiances is where it counts
good luck with it all.... good to see more volunteers
also melbourne water firefighters were there also.

So what exactly are the ropes of training Dave? What are some of the things you have to do?

Cool, a bit of physical training will be great! Does the north, south east and west of Melbourne have different training sites, or is it all done at the one place for all sides of Melbourne???
you mainly do training within your group, but they do have trianing grounds with pads for stuff like structure training (the next course after basic) has like gas tanks on fire cars on fire and houses on fire in which you don ba and go for search and rescue.... its really good and really exhausting... the cfa traing facililties are at carrum downs and fiskville(near ballan) if you get a chance to go to any of these do it
