Gun ownership is increasing because not all that many years ago, everyone had guns to shoot rabbits/foxes etc, then they all had to get rid of/stash them all. So now, foxes and rabbits have started taking over again, and everyone is figuring out that they do actually need guns for pest control, coz writing a letter just doesn't have the same effect with rabbits.

Yes, only in America. So many people get killed from guns over there and still nothing is done about it. Fking ridiculous.

I seem to recall that the American Constitution protects the right to bear arms, which is a major stumbling block for those wishing to cut back on gun numbers over there.

Our Constitution has never had any such provision, thank heavens.

US gun control is abysmal. You don't need a license, you just need to be over 18/21 (think it varies by state) and NOT have a criminal record for certain types of violent crime, and then you just walk into a store and buy one over the counter. You can even rent or borrow guns and its totally legal.

In Australia there is a licensing system, you need to pass a test, and you can't just buy one because you want it, you have to be in a shooting club, or need it for pest control etc. Even then the firearms categories are very strict, its hard to get hold of a handgun license, and next to impossible to get semi-automatic or automatic licenses.

Storage laws here mean you have to keep them locked up in a gun safe which meets certain standards so people can't steal them etc. In the US you can sleep with a gun under your pillow if you want.

When I used to shoot we kept the rifles in a 4" thick safe, inside a cage, behind a steel reinforced door, and the bolts and ammo were stored at the range in another huge safe, 10km away.

Gun culture and law between the US and Australia is just so different it's hardly worth comparing.

Yes it is impossible to compare our laws to Americas.
I supose living in America where population out numbers Australias many times over, plus having so much poverty, crime and run down ghettos with blacks roaming in numbers, it is not suprising that America has the constitution it does.
It is just dumbfounding that there are not more strict control laws for guns over there.
A kid gets bullied at school, instead of sorting it out behind the portables, he just turns up at school with daddys 9mm semi-automatic and sorts it out that way, taking a few more for good measure.
It is a sad case of affairs over there and I am extremely glad I was born here.

Well yes, the laws are technically strict, but from what I have seen the police inspections have been quite lenient. I don't own guns myself, but was at a farm that got inspected one day, and it went something like this:
- Phone call from local cop to say he was coming around
- take semi-autos out of gun cabinet and hide in cupboard
- cop arrives and looks over the gun and ammo cabinets
- leaves with a comment about the single shot .22 not really needing the 25 round mag in the cabinet, and that next time it shouldn't be in there

That said, all my experiences have been in a tiny country town, so they are probably more relaxed

It's not just blacks man, seriously you have some race issues.

As Calaber mentioned, it's hard to restrict gun ownership/usage in the States, because "the master law" (aka The Constitution) protects many "rights" regarding gun ownership.

it varies from state to state in usa but u still need to go threw checks and then have the firarms licenced to u .. u just cant rock up and say give me 10 glocks and a mac 10..

Checks sure, but there is no licensing system, in many cases its a criminal record check to see if you fit certain categories.

Put it into contrast, you'd struggle buy even 1 Glock in Australia, let alone an AR15 or M16... honestly, it's two different worlds.

I think it is more American culture and their blind belief in their constitution rather than anything to do with arming yourself for protection against another race. It wouldn't surprise me that some americans may do that though.

Its mostly due to GW bringing in lax laws that meant you could buy assualt rifles again with no cooling off period and minimum back ground checks, so many people protested it because lets face it you don`t fish or cull with an AK47 it`s designed to effiecently kill human beings, over here its a good set up after port arthur the you could only own bolt and breech loading rifles and shotguns (except for primary producers which can have some more effeicent
weapons such as pump action S/Guns) but its a good balance so if the japanese decide to invade again we sort of sufficently armed, lol

P.S the pistol laws are a bit "meh" due to most been rapid fire semi-auto combined with the fact they are easy to conseal.
