Ok guys need some help as I think I have something wired wrong. Surround sound works fine with DVD's but not when watching TV/Foxtel. I have the surround sound/dvd running with a HDMI cable and optical sound to the TV and the foxtel is running a component cable........any thoughts why surround aint working? It runs in stereo fine (front speakers working) just not surround.

so from foxtel to amp is just the red and white rca audio leads? or is the component/audio running into tv then through hdmi into amp? if its from foxtel>tv>amp change it to foxtel>amp and give it a go,
what type of audio reciever do you have, does it say anything on the screen when you press dolby digital?

hmm, im thinking maybe the tv isnt outputting in digital as such, go through the audio setting make sure output settings are set to digital or dolby etc, mpeg might only be 2ch
even if you disconnect the video as well and just run audio into the amp, it might give you an indication whether its the tv foxtel or even tv,, if the leads are hard to get to try a mp3 player if you have the 3.5mm plug into 2x rcas,
i take it you are pressing dolby digital etc on the amps remote

Like in the attached picture?
If so, this may not work. See, some TV's, although having a digital optical output, can only output 2.0 PCM sound. This is a hardware limitation; the only way to get around it is to plug the Foxtel video cables into the TV, and the Foxtel audio cables into your surround sound, assuming it has appropriate inputs.
However, if you simply connect up the standard red and white audio cables, you will never, ever get 5.1 - maybe just DD Pro Logic or Pro Logic II. Hook it up via the optical and you should get 5.1, assuming your Foxtel box can do 5.1.

Does Foxtel broadcast 5.1 channel sound? If they're only broadcasting in stereo, you'll get simulated surround at best.

It is now wired as follows:
*Foxtel is wired to the TV with component cables and optical audio to the surround sound/dvd
*DVD is wired to the TV with optical only.
Any way I can run 5.1 on both, im sure im missing something.

Can you wire the optical from the DVD to the surround sound box? Usually with those things you send all the video outputs to the TV, and the audio outputs to the surround sound receiver.
The only irritating thing with that setup is you have to switch the sound input AND the TV channel, but it's not a huge deal.
