My cousin is in the market for a Commodore and hes come across this on ebay...

i have doubts but im not really sure...has anybody else seen this on ebay does anybody know the story behind this particular car?

Yep, legit, HSV have done a few off the wall models, the HSV Jackaroo, the HSV Astra a while back and the latest Vauxhall one, the first VN HSV was actually a 6 cyl too in the SV3800, overshadowed by the various other VN models such as the SV89, the SV5000 the SV LE (which two or three of got the group a throttle bodies and all) and of course the Group A itself.

The XU6 was a VT/VX model if i recall correctly, the VX model had a unique body kit and basically a clubsport interior. You can see the HSV build plate on the passenger strut tower too in the engine bay photo of that one...

FWIW, they killed the XU6 off due to the base model BA Falcon having more power straight out of the box and for a considerable lot cheaper as well.
