hey guys, just wondering how you can become one of those escort drivers for oversized trucks. always thought that would be cool to do.
My guess would be to call a trucking company, find out whether the escort drivers are hired by the trucking company or are outsourced, and send a resume to whomever hires the drivers.
A Commodore is a passion. Anything else is just a car
All the pilots I know have been in the shipping/trucking/transport industry for a long time, and are well connected.![]()

The first pre-requisite for all the ones I know is you need to be at least 150 kg and your gut has to rest comfortably on the steering wheel.

LMAO, Sounds about right.
Sure is, I've done it when family has had to move machinery, nothing like going 40km/h with everyone behind you abusing you and getting pissed off. But its quite funny listening to people on the CB bitch about you.

I'm a certified pilot vehicle driver and you have to do two courses, one is a course run by vic roads for the pilot vehicle itself which takes a good day to do.
Then you do another course for the stop/go management. Basically you can't have one without the other.
you just need one of those cars with orange lights on the top and a Wide Load sign![]()
You will get in the shit big time if you're caught.
Over dimensional loads, meaning length and/or width require pilot vehicles. Depending on the size of the load, only one vehicle may be required at the front but in some cases vehicles are required at the front and back, and in some cases a vic roads escort is also required.
Not only do you need a licence, but your vehicle must be propery fitted with a class 2 reflective oversize sign at no more than a 45% angle on the roof of the vehicle. Plus you need to carry certain items in your vehicle. Flags, strong broom, vest, stop/go just to name a few.
I couldn't believe the shit you need to do this but given that you're responsible for what you're escorting i can see why.![]()
Ahhh ok, Ill let them do it themselves or pay someone haha, never knew you had to do a course, actually i wonder if they know haha.
Car is decked out to do it, though wouldnt have a stop go sign.
Only doing it when moving the big tractors, and have been asked when moving dozer/excavators but generally they can do that themselves anyway.
If you're asked to do it quite a bit, then the course is worth the hassle. It's a common sense course really and there are courses running all the time. If you want more info contact vic roads and they will steer you in the right direction.
Just remember, you also need to complete the stop/ go management course as well to get your pilot vehicle licence.
i shift houses for a living with my parents so we deal with them all the time the going rate in qld is about $110 an hour. You may not need to do te stop go course it just means you won't be allowed to direct traffic om foot
