hi i got a vr commodore with the raptor kit . i keep getting defected for the supercharger and i want to get it engineered. but i cant get it engineered cos it needs to pass the adr 79/01 emissions compliance which costs $1500 - $4000 to get it done, then you have to pay the engineer after that. but the enginneer said if a vr commodore with the raptor kit has done it before with the results i could use that. or just advice on what i should do so get around this thanks.
I have a few thoughts on the matter
1. Is there a place where you can simply have it tested to see where its at? In NSW I have been recently informed that there is such a place in Sydney and it allows you to know where your emissions are currently at and you can then work on the situation to get clean.
2. To get past any emissions I suspect a completely stock exhaust with all heat shields and stock cat convertor in place is needed.
3. You can pinch someone elses test (the test is not a type certification, but a one car only test) but ultimately the next time you get sent for a check and they (the transport lot) find that it isn't actually yours then situation remains the same.
4. You have possibly only consulted one engineer, check there aren't others who may show more understanding what you need.
Type certification is for those companies who have around $40k to spare, there isn't anyone willing to do that for the odd kit or three that gets used.
The other thing, a car that is being constantly targetted has other reasons for first being "checked" non of which are directly due to a kit of some sort under the bonnet. A burnout, too low, too loud, etc etc all bring on the attention and THEN you get the full inspection - hence issue.
I have never ever been checked under the bonnet no matter where i have driven, my car looked stock, drove within the law and car went like stink - never a problem. I am sure with a decent burnout to my name I would have gotten checked out front bumper to bumper.

yes i have talk to number on engineers and they all said the same thing i have to get tested for adr 79/01 emissions compliance, thats not the standed test. this test is on a dyno with your exhaust contect to a computer which tells you your emmissions and it cost $1500-$4000 and thats the only way. but the engineer said if any vr commodore out there with raptor charger on it passed this test anyone with a vr can use the result. only because to prove that the supercharger meets the emissions standand for that model of car. then because every vr commy has different emmissions in some way you just need the standard emissions test done to the car which cost only $100. so if anyone has done this test can you let me know thanks.
There is a cop in the area where he searches for "hoon" cars, i got pulled over for the first time and i have now had the supercharge on for a 1 and a bit years and no probelems till now. he saw the intercooler and yer all over defect, so i take the charger off get the car back on the road put the charger back on and then he sees the number plate then the lights flash and its over again. he got me last week when i was going to work the rat.
i think i should move or spray my car i different colour lol
Hmm, the supercharger of itself produces no emissions or any increased emissions, the using of its boost with appropriate fuel enrichment possibly can. I could supply a charger with 1 psi boost, you fit your old injectors and MEMCAL together with a stock exhaust from front to back in perfect condition and thats how a pass can theoretically be achieved, all you need is a low cost testing facility to be sure. The VR kit is my lowest selling V6 kit by far, there is only a handful out there most in Qld the rest in WA, maybe 1 or 2 in VIC at most.
When you fitted the cooler what sort of retuning if any did you do?
Do you have a blacked out or Alloy coloured cooler, I am guessing alloy? Did you cut any metal to get the cooler fitted in, if so watch out for that as well if you are getting engineered.

I have some thoughts on this since it's the only reason I and most people, especially in Victoria don't run a blower. I believe the way the law works is, you can do any modification you want so long as it doesn't worsen the emmisions of the car, that's how it's writin in the EPA's guide but I think the actual law is that you just have to keep it within the ADR the car originally passed. A VR wont have to pass 79/01, that would be very tough, but you do need to pass the original less strict 37/00 that it passed when new. Most/all performance companys in the states sell parts saying smog legal in California (the most strict/least backward state, ie Victoria for the Americans). They take a stock car and add the part they want to pass and then when/if they pass with the perfomance part installed, it's then legal to have installed on your car, I guess they come with the test results in the kit. The parts in the states that are not emmisions tested allways say "For offroad use only". You have probably seen that being used in adds.
There are not many companies in Australia that go to the trouble/cost to get parts ADR approved, there are a couple turbo/supercharger kits mostly for the LS1's and Boss V8 that are ADR approved, but I don't think anyone does any for the early Holden stuff. It's probably not worth it for Raptor since they mostly sell to the wild North when no one cares about emmisions and I don't even think it's illegal up there. Also make so many kits for so many different engines it would be very costly to approve all of them since like you say its about 2-3 grand for the test and if you fail you fail, no refund.
A healthy VR V6 probably could pass 37/00 if the tune is good but might be a bit touch and go without twin cats. With twin cats mounted pretty close to the headers and header tape everywhere you would do it standing on your head, if it's going to come to that, then that's what you will need to do. I have 37/00 in a pdf somewhere if you want to read what the test is all about.
Once in a while in Melbourne they setup multiple stage road blocks with rwc tests drink/drug tests and a epa testing station all on the one road and they are very good at what they do, this is the problem![]()

Well written, couldn't have done a better job myself.
Our tuner in Melb says this also, not that big a challenge but you have to know you are good for it which is something a person can do in NSW but apparently not in VIC where you simply get the option to pay and win/lose ....... pretty stupid I thinkA healthy VR V6 probably could pass 37/00 if the tune is good but might be a bit touch and go without twin cats. I got my VP V6 turbo passed in VIC but its more the cost and effort that sucks.
Yeah in QLD all you need is a $50 mod plate and they basically just make sure its been installed correctly.
I just had an emissions test done on my car today and you should only have to pass the test for the year range of the car and ADR. Your VR should only have to pass ADR 37/00 where my VX needs to pass ADR 37/01 which is slightly more stricter. ADR 79/01 is the EURO 3 standard for cars built between 1/1/05 to 1/7/08.
Here is a link to the page that I have found with all the different emissions standards.
Emissions
Needless to say that mine failed and may be due to the exhaust I have on the car.
Note: In NSW the RTA emissions testing is done free of charge.
