We picked up a VY exec today, stock as they come with 54000 km. This car will get a gradual buildup to become an S or SS in appearance. The main aim is to get motor supercharged with Raptor Prostreet and then Intercooled Prostreet at a later date.
Will take some pics as we go, will get stock photos and start from that.
Will also attempt to get stock quartermile and dyno measurements to compare with the improved output. The parts we fit will be typical of what an owner would modify.
Will be likely fitting:
1. FIT 1.97:1 Xtreme rockers COMPLETED
2. HM headers and HSV exhaust COMPLETED
3. Raptor V ProStreet 9.5psi kit COMPLETED
4. S/SS genuine body parts to give the exec a makeover.SS WING AND GAUGE BINNACLE ADDED more to come
5.Billett servo's for auto to improve shifting
Timeframe: mostly complete by June 07
Then there is VY (and VU, VX) Prostreet intercooled
1. Fitting Cobalt Autometer real time intercooler temp gauge and boost gauge in binnacle COMPLETED
2. 75mm MAF NOT NEEDED FOR VY V6
3. 280x300x76mm intercooler and 75mm piping COMPLETED
4. Full retune to balance everything for perfect power and reliability COMPLETED
Should see some pictures attached and there is even a time slip for the STOCK VY as it came straight from ex fleet lease. Don't know if the time is representative of VY exec's generally but we are extremely pleased to see a 15.65sec 400m time. At least we got one with good standard performance

Raptor Superchargers - Boosting S1/S2 3800's, Ecotec's, Alloytec's and 304's
Just a Q, why the choice of FIT and HM?
Extractors
All test results for Raptor kits have so far been developed around both Pacemaker and Genie Extractors. However prior to the Holden kit work we used only HM, we had great service from that company and the product worked well, thought we should give em a go on the V6. The HM does seem to have a bit broader powerband than most other brands and there are a few header options from them which go well with supercharging. Will be ringing them for full and complete information and will let you all know what part number we go with and how it goes.
Rockers
We have had an association with FIT for sometime, some of our customers use YT and some use FIT, again both seem to go pretty well. So since we know Tony and he been good to us in the past we will try his 1.97:1 rockers, it is possible they may not fit due to casting changes in the VY ECOTEC, he has made us aware of this, some motors have it worse than others. If they FIT (pardon the pun) we will use them, if not then maybe we will go with YT as they have a solution to the casting issue.
We don't get too pedantic about all this as customers will want variations for whatever reason anyway, we are just going for a combo which we believe will be great for the Raptor VY![]()

Looks good mate, should make some serious power. Look foward to seeing the results.
Steve.
Today the sparkplugs have been purchased and installed
For those who have never changed their own sparkplugs before
1. For ECOTEC you need a 5/8" plug socket (long reach socket) and a rachet or T handle to turn it with
2. With motor NOT running disconnect all your ignition leads from the sparkplugs
3. Using socket and drive remove each sparkplug, turn plug in anticlockwise direction to undo
4. Then unpack your new sparkplugs and insert, when tightening them do not use all your strength, just firm is good and all that is needed.
5. Reconnect all your ignition wires making sure the correct wire for each plug is connected
6. Remove all tools, rags, mates and other crap out of engine bay and start the engine, if everything is correct it will run smooth as! The whole job is very easy in the VT - VY models since there is a lot of space along side the engine.
You will see we have chosen Iridium sparkplugs, this plug type allows us a much greater tuning range before we run into detonation issues. The old plugs are just fine for everyday use but will not cut it when the serious stuff cuts in. Most Raptor kits are supplied with Iridium sparkplugs so the owner will achieve his best performance.
Small task 1 completed

I have them in mine and they are great and supposly last up to 80,000kms with them. I think I paid $12 each with a trade discount so its not too bad.

Developments so far this week
Below you will see the recommendation for our VY by HM/Perry. We will be going with this recommendation from the people who know and take it from there.
Once the goods arrive and are fitted we will put some pics up
Recommended system for vehicle
HM8TCSS – Stainless Steel header with 1 5/8” primary pipes to suit twin cat setup.
HM718 – Twin high flow 2½” 1.7 litre Delphi cats with pipework and flanges to suit header and change front muffler flange to V8 position
HM8TIRS – Mild steel dual 2¼” front mufflers converting into single 2½” rear muffler and outlet complete with chrome tip.
I recommend this configuration for the described vehicle to provide good low down torque while maintaining high end performance, in our vast experience in dealing with these vehicles we have found that these pipe sizes have proved a very good package for all round performance.
The stainless steel header comes with a 10 year warranty, we do not recommend using anything but stainless steel in front of a catalytic convertor. The catalytic convertors used are the same units specified for our V8 systems therefore offering more than enough flow for this particular vehicle. And lastly the exhaust system specified merges into a single pipe as we have found that a full dual system on these vehicles will sacrifice low down torque required for a good all round performance

Today was dyno day for the completely stock VY V6 Auto. Numbers appear normal and decent enough for the supposed 152Kw that Holden quoted for this model
We printed out charts in both KW and HP so you should find something which suits your preference
You should find pictures attached.

Hey Tim, did you gap your plugs?
Tim,
It's Matt in Sydney. Good to see you bought yourself a VY! Can't wait until you get the kit sorted, so I can finally get it on my ute!!![]()
The plug gap has been left as supplied @ 1.5mm.
We did regap plugs in the past if the fire went out during dyno testing, a consequence of that is that all the spark plugs supplied in Raptor kits were between .9 and 1.1mm for absolute reliability. However, our tuner informed us very recently its best if possible to go with standard gap, so we are trying standard gap again, if it works correctly then fine if not then we will reduce gap to previous. In fact we have been supplying an Iridium that was already adjusted from the factory since regapping isn't recommended for Iridium plugs.
Matt
Yes this is underway, we are going to forget about the COSMETIC stuff until the first full stage of boosting is complete, we are here to sell POWER not pretty bitsExpecting the whole extractors exhaust system thing to be sorted in 3 weeks, then Rockers and then BOOST
It does appear we are going for a total review of our exhaust/extractors decision, stay tuned.

The exhaust system decisions are taking their time, our choice has changed for a few reasons, will inform about system after it is fitted.
Booked in Friday, will oversee the work to make sure we get what is asked for and then off to the test and tune the same night!
Should have a big slug of info and pics on Saturday afternoon all going well.![]()

Latest update, this applies especially to VY owners
It is widely reported that the differential seems to contaminate its oil very quickly, this leads to early failure of the diff bearings, the solution is to change the oil each 20 000kms of use. This advice comes from several service technicians.
So how did the Raptor car with 55 000km on it fair?
Well it appears the drain bung has never been out from what we can tell, so out with the 15mm socket for the drain and a 28mm socket for the filler bung, who thinks up these weird nut sizes at Holden??
Now we have already checked all the other oils in the car and they were spotlessly clean, so how was the diff? Check out the oil in the red container!
Stuffed and stinky describes it nicely and oil degradation usually precedes mechanical failure. The oil seemed to be free of fine metal particles which was a bonus.
We selected our favourite lube brand and ordered the correct grade of lube, we have used Amsoil Synthetic Lubes for 15 years now and find it really keeps everything running smooth when serious power is applied. Check the picture. We get it from a Queensland importer, highly recommended.
If you are changing you own diff oil you will need a pump!
So now our differential is all set for the big power upgrade coming in a few weeks.
Tomorrow the exhaust system![]()

I will be changing my diff oil ASAP!! Ive done 80,000 and I don't think mine has ever been changed!! Can't wait for the results, My money is in the Bank!! Done Plugs, Now ready for exhaust.![]()
Chris
Yep flick that old lube, a good plan and reliability into the future.
We are off the to the test and tune with our new extractors and exhaust system in place, will elaborate on the results and system setup tomorrow if we can get to it.

what does it say in the service manual of the duration for replacing the diff oil? im pretty sure it says in mine it doesn't need replacing..... as if

You are right is doesn't say to service it, but in light of people having plenty of experience with this model now its the word on making the diff last and for the price of a couple of liters of oil its perfect insurance.
We think what drained out was evidence enough it needs to be done.....
Interestingly enough the owners handbook has information on all other lubes for the car but nothing about what the differential needs or even how much it holds. Several people have said to us since purchasing the car, does your cars diff whine? They proceeded to tell lots of storys about VY diffs!
Raptor Superchargers - Boosting S1/S2 3800's, Ecotec's, Alloytec's and 304's
Where to start on this one......... we had a plan but that got shot to bits, dramas, delays and transport mixups conspired to change everything.
We were going HM, couldn't, but still will be, we have a different plan now on where they fit into the scheme of things.
We have 2 sets of extractors nowboth 1 5/8" primary's, the HM in Stainless and Pacemaker with the traditional blue paint. Both brands are going to be tested during the Supercharging phase in back to back test.
So in the end we had a set of Pacemaker extractors and a genuine VY HSV stainless steel rear system (Twin 2 1/4" and almost identical to HM8TIRS) system, from this setup we will determine what changes we are going to make next ....... if any in terms of the rear part of the system.
The results at the quartermile
A full reduction in time of approx .13 of a second to 15.52!!! That was best of 5 runs with all runs approx .15 of a second different. Very consistant and the gain is probably around 8hp or so at best, will attempt to verify this on dyno.
Conclusion (for NA) of fitting extractors and high flow exhast system to VY N/A engine, its not worth it and has no particular power benefit, even the bone stock exec exhaust system will give you within a poofteenth of the cars best power! Hope this doesn't up set anyone, apologise if it does but thats the fact as we found it so far.
Thoughts on exhaust/extractors system regarding the future
Until the supercharger system goes on we don't know the real potential in the system we have installed however we have made the following observations.
Its looks the goods, sounds good, very quiet inside car with NO droning at all and added a little bit of HP. We were more concerned about how it would effect NVH than about what power it would make at this stage, we like our car quiet inside and still want the high flow, the setup we have solidly meets the first target.
Will get photos of system and timeslips up in a couple of days

I would feel shattered to have spent $2500 on a schmick Exhaust only to find I had gained a few horsies!!![]()
Thanks a Million for the feedback. Appreciation is at the extreme for your info on saving us all money.![]()
![]()
i can get my hands on a standard VY LS1 system, Cats and all for about $300. I think I will add your charger etc first and then after a couple of power runs, exhaust. I think the gains will be more substantial this way and mind over matter, make me feel that the exhaust was a Justified addition. thanks again Raptor. Look forward to your next post.![]()
im spending a fortune on my car, just spent 10 grand on 4.2 stroker long motor running 8.2:1 comp. I would love to compare when we fit the s/c on it
I just had a dyno a few days ago with a stock ecotec that made 118 kw the only thing of changed is the exhaust. What you are saying about the exhaust could be true as I beat you by 4 kw![]()
208rwkw 13.5 @ 102MPHSTROKED AND BLOWN
Manic i hope everything else in drive train is strong cause the figures have worked out for a stroker motor with a Raptor added is seriously silly power.
Mine in N/A mod before Raptor added was pushing 119.3rwkw or just off 160rwhp with old muffler when charger added first power runs pushed 265rwhp changed muffler to race muffler and went 274rwhp so let them breath on the intake and exhaust and they come alive.
221.48rwkw Raptor Supercharged VS Ute latest dyno run as of 04/08/07
yep new trans and diff is coming before I supercharge it
im expecting around 150 rwkw with using a lower compression ratio and a s/c on top of that.
I will be chasing around 220 rwkw at least its going to be mad![]()

208rwkw 13.5 @ 102MPHSTROKED AND BLOWN
You wont ever gain much power from an exhaust on a NA V6 especially an off the shelf one, no one ever has and probably never will.
With a V8 you can make huge gains just because the way the engine fires is very inefficient and makes a double exhaust pulse down the same bank twice per cycle (that's what makes the gurgle sound). The V6 doesn't to this so there's no problem to be fixed, that's why you don't see much gains and never see a VN-VY with extractors that goes any faster than a stock one
Maniac
We will have dyno numbers buy mid dec for 1 if not 2 V6 engines with stroker kits in them. One is a 3800 the other an ECOTEC, one is 4.2 the other 4.3 liter, the 3800 being the 4.3 liter job. As Tuddles says, these larger engines should make some decent power.
Greenfoam, agree![]()
