    Barra swap

Easier to swap an LS into it given they already came with them. Better engine with better resale in a VY.

    SS LS3 starter motor replacement?

I did mine, driver's side jacked up, wheel off, heat shield off, you can access it and remove but only just. It helps to be a contortionist. Definitely disconnect battery earth first.

VE SSV Series 1 - removing Aerpro and revert to OEM

You wont have any climate issues as the Aerpro stuff ran your SS-V dual climate system right? If you go back to a stock SS-V unit it should all keep working fine. As others have said, it's just a VIN match job -your VIN, not the seller's VIN. You can get them sent to you and just flash it...

Scratchin my head on some of these.

Nothing. VE is better than the VT-based stuff in every way except the intangible stuff like visuals appeal etc. Ive owned VZ and VE and they're black and white, and only a fool would say otherwise. But people "want what they want"...

    500HP Twin turbo LFX!

I guess my point was the Barra boys rarely see logic and would find any excuse for a turbo-anything being faster than one.
  6. Brettly-2008

    500HP Twin turbo LFX!

Nah, the Barra boys would simply say they never came from the factory with turbos so they don't count.

How to get 202 to pull 12 seconds

I find it odd that you're tossing up between a 202 and a 253. The 253 will need a lot of V8-related work if the car was originally a 6, and if a 253 is still on the table, you may as well start looking at 308 and even the stroking options of 355 and 383. That'll get you into the 12s without...

Joining the ZB crew - 2019 LT 2.0L long term review thread.

That's a bit embarrassing. Holden's greatest achievement was VE-VF's Zeta platform; a near 50-50 balanced rear-drive set-up with huge wheelbase and low overhangs capable of great handling and power-down capability. Front-drive platforms like ZB etc simply aren't in the same league, including...

Video review of my VFII SSV Redline

I watched this -it was pretty decent, but I find most of Ross' stuff annoying and contradictory, not to mention super Ford-biased. Almost every vid he compares whatever car he's testing to his turbo Barra, and they never stack up to the mighty Barra apparently. He never gets close to 0-100kmh...

    Just noticed this difference and....

Nah, screen has nothing to do with it. The swoopy base circled first was part of the luxury design of the modular interior -Berlina, Calais, Statesman, Caprice. HSV interiors were based on Calais so had the same design. Omega, SV6, SS and SS-V had the more pronounced vertical stack, circled second.

    Ve omega engine rattle

The rattle could be related to the timing chain tensioners which rely on oil to take up their slack. The have very small oil holes feeding them and can get blocked causing a slack chain (not stretch). Maybe try an oil flush or two?
  12. Brettly-2008

    The deadly rattle!

Suspension noise is generally 'clunks' 'clicks' and 'clacks'. Given how you're describing this noise; 'front and rear, trailer with empty tin cans bouncing around' I'd say it's almost definitely a catalytic convertor has dropped its lunch and is rattling internally. That's why the noise is hard...

    Experience with non-genuine parts

While the general best practice is to go genuine with replacement parts, I'm keen to hear people's experiences with non-genuine stuff like radiators, electrical stuff, water pumps, gaskets etc. My personal experience is hit and miss with non genuine stuff but a few years back I fitted a non gen...

    Repairing manual transmission at home

Thanks mate, yeah I'll keep my eye on east coast options. Got quoted $1200 (exchange!) for a used box here in WA!

    Repairing manual transmission at home

Yeah, but it's quiet and free-spinning. There's no noise whatsoever in 4th so it seems likely to be associated with the lay shaft and its bearings.

    Repairing manual transmission at home

Thanks RJK. Yeah, I've been looking at equivalent Mazda options and you're right the Bongo stuff is plentiful overseas, but I'm not keen to look that far afield for a van that cost us $700. Either way it looks like it'll end up costing me more than expected. I'll keep tackling the tear-down of...

Yep that's exactly where my research has led me to also. Hopefully that makes it an easier job! haha.

Losh's Series I SS Ute (AKA Black Thunder).

The long strip of plastic is from an Omega series 1 dash, it runs from passenger side to instrument binnacle then another piece runs to driver's door. The flat panel looks the same shape as the centre dash speaker cover but I'm not sure which didn't have a centre speaker? Omega? The black piece...

    Repairing manual transmission at home

Hi all, my partner and I have begun a camper van project with a 1996 Ford Econovan. It's a 5-speed manual with a grinding/bearing-type noise whenever the clutch is released, and in all gears except 4th. The trans works perfectly, other than the noise. I've ripped it out but cant seem to source...

Radius Arm Replacement - torque bolt in driving position?

Well to be fair, this is what you said originally: "Was advised my radius arms need replacing" The radius arm itself is a solid chunk of metal, the bushes on the other hand...

    Red Lights Near Automatic Shifter???

You sure they haven't fallen out of the traction ctrl and sport mode buttons?
  22. Brettly-2008

What next will they try to flog for stupid money ???

I saw a 2016 SSV ute (non-Redline) with 35,000kms for $66k advertised today. Nice car, low kms, but that's HSV money.

    HDT Aero motors?

Do you mean how did they manage to get 267hp out of 304cui back then? Pretty easy really.

    Turbo Buick vs 5L

140kw atw is a very healthy stock 304, they're about 140-150hp at the wheels.
  25. Brettly-2008

    Turbo Buick vs 5L

Stock 304 was 165kw and 380nm -good for 7.5secs in VN-VP, which was/is plenty quick for those old girls. Plus they sound great with a bit of an exhaust and are simple and reliable. I wouldn't ever opt for a turbo V6 over one. But that's just me.

2007 VE series 1 radio replaced question.

I'm with you, keep it stock replacement. Also helps with resale I reckon, especially as these cars are getting older and stock is king. I can live with some old-school functionality and it only costs 100-150 for a mail order VIN flash, so it's much cheaper.

2007 VE series 1 radio replaced question.

    Yep absolutely.

    Creaking/clunking possibly from sway bar?

You can get to the sway bar bushes by putting each wheel at full lock an accessing them from the wheel arch.

    Fitting HSV 195i 304 into 88 VL

I'd offer your VT engine as part swap for the VR V8, and like you say source an engine loom from this era too.

    Korean made Holdens

BMW was the first Euro brand to go Chinese for manufacturing of its road bike range (circa 2015?). I read an interview where the BMW manufacturing honcho said "the Chinese are capable of learning quality and producing quality but you have to watch them constantly or they fall back to cutting...

    LN3 or L27?

Yeah I did go and look at all this. Interesting how the L27 is listed as having a slight power increase over LN3 but Australian versions didn't see this until VP's version.
  34. Brettly-2008

    LN3 or L27?

All good, happy to help. I get knarky about the stuff that gets made more complicated than it needs to be. The other one is interiors colours... VN had 5 trim colours with easily-identifiable names but people still shout out on forums "i need a 66i door handle or a 76i glovebox lid". Maybe it's...

    LN3 or L27?

I assume L27 is the series 2 V6? Why have people all of a sudden started using obscure codes for simple things? Simple visual things to identify a series 2 (VN or VP) engine were coil packs and top heater hose placement. Coil packs were no longer flat on the top and the heater hose entered the...

    Whistling at startup?

Mine has always done this. I'm not sure of the actual reason, but i'm not worried.
  37. Brettly-2008

    Proper name please

VE Sports wagon dropped mid August 2008. Holden pretty much always released new stuff around August-October.
  38. Brettly-2008

    Proper name please

Spot on, Holden went to the 7.7mm chain specifically for VE to add 'refinement' to the new car but I'm sure some of these narrower (less durable) chains found their way into late VZ.

This is the path for the PVC hose (from rocker cover to intake) as per your pic on page 25.
