    variable power steering??

the key to keeping it from frying is to make sure you keep the power steering fluid clean and flush it every other year as when it gets dirty, it overheats causing the soleniod to sieze in place from heat or from catching pieces of gaskets which makes the rack break up internally and then its...

    statesman climate control to vn

Good luck hope your real handy with electronics otherwise you'll get nothing but errors. You'll need to install three new sensors which will need to be calibrated properly to work. Don't forget that sun sensor otherwise you'll have very weak A/C.

    variable power steering??

jeez this site is full of so much mis information these days. Variable power steering was only ever on VP Calais and VQ2 Statesman and Caprices. V6s AND V8s. And was discontinued on VY. Never on the VN, and not only on V8s (thow they're all different racks) and u can tell if ur car has one...

    VQ staty and SV93

SV93 is based on VQ! It's longbase, don't know where you got your info from. Differences off the top of my head. 180kw motor, different wheels, 16" wheels minor bodykit based on caprice and ss (has caprice lip and boot spoiler, but bigger side skirts from the ss) different suspension...

    Rear electric windows?

All VN Calais have four power windows from factory. Only berlinas and optioned SS have front only. You must either have a rebadged Berlina or the previous onwer removed them himself as the motors are usually only good for 10 or so years of use. It's not an easy job, probably not worth...

    VQ stato cluster

Same looking clusters, just a few new warning lights on VQS2 - but you need a VQ Series 1 VN Calais = VQS1 VP Calais = VQS2 VP Calais / VQ have ABS, rear light bulb failure light, audiable alarms etc... so direct swap between series will cause problems as no BCM.

    bridgestone potenza gIII tyres

I've had some experience with them. They are good in wet and dry and look great from behind (treat pattern) and they're sticky as and have lips to protect your rims for guttering BUT they don't last as long as some of the harder compound ones. For 18s they are good if your gonna be driving...

Does the SPD light up ?

It should, possibly a dodgy loom was malfunctioning so the previous owner removed the globe so that it wouldn't play up on the new owner... Stuff like that is done all the time where I used to work :)

    Calais Subs

For rock sorta music/metal etc, i would say go for one 12" sub and a set of 6x9 in parcel shelf. Bass will kick nice with kickdrums and bass lines. Or 6inch splits for the fronts with sub and don't worry about new rear speakers.. What ever suits your setup.
  11. M

    Calais Subs

Yeh the stock 8s can't handle low frequencies too well. Two 8s would suit some music style better than a 10 or a 12. do you want loud bass with low frequency response, or do you want more refined bass with less low frequency response. The standard ones in Vy calais are pretty...

    The 3800...

Yep and also the later the VN the better as it runs smoother & cooler and less vibrations cause less problems at high RPM. They are cheap swapovers, most wreckers will do a swapover for 800 or so with a second hand one. I wouldn't get too worried about it - it has a rev limiter :)

BTW 8,6 for a mint condition VP SS is cheap, some Ive seen here are still going for 10 grand and most need a respray.

    vp ss questions

Garth aren't u getting a bit old for burnout comps :) Seriously the front end damage sounds about standard for a VP of that age, don't let that get you down. I went through all the same ****, just ripped it all out and swapped. Prett cheap if you can do it yourself. The cheap **** they use...

    WTF is Happening with JC?

This IMMATURITY on your behalf Juzza is an embarassment to the MOD team and JC. Some of the posts I've seen mods make really make me embarassed to be one. I am very sorry to hear what happened to Ratt, I think we lost a good MATURE MOD member, I know I haven't been that active on this site...

Vn or Vp? That is the question

Owning a VN Calais 5.0 i thought you'd have a bit more sense than that! :D Mmany VN V8s (and VNSSs) were written off due to the live axel and high output of the new V8. IRS stops you doing those 180s in the wet when you give a bit too much throttle, I must admit that when I upgraded to...

Workshop manual - Gregorys or Max Ellery?

Max has more information on engine fault codes and diagnostics. Max is also more vague, trying to cover a few models in the range. Gregorys is laid out in a more clear format, easier to follow and has better quality pictures. That's my 2 cents. Both are good, but i tend to use the...

Is my Head Gasket Gone????? Please HELP

And chaing the piston rings or valve seats is probably not worth it just for a bit of smoke. Use a thicker grade magnetic oil and if you must thrash it hard, then check and top up the oil level often.

Is my Head Gasket Gone????? Please HELP

O2 sensor O2 sensor Its probably blowing smoke because it was an old man vehicle, never taken beyond 2500 rpm, now is being thrashed and therefore the piston rings have shat themselves letting oil through. Capish??

    Dissapearing Water/Coolant...

Sounds like a headgasket issue. Do a compression test and/or watch for steam in the exahust pipe once the car has warmed up. Heater core is a big job and I'm wondering how poorly the cars been maintainted if at 120,000ks its blown the heater core & headgasket?!?

    VS Commodore about to R.I.P.

I just wanna stress that you take it to an auto elec.. Mechanics are like doctors, they know a bit about everything, but when there's something specialised involved, you have to see the specialist. Get what I mean, i bet for an autoelec this would be an easy fix. G'luck let us know...

    VS Commodore about to R.I.P.

Sounds definately like a bad earth maybe from the ECU to a sensor such as the manifold absolute sensor. Take it to a qualified auto electrician, if all the mechanic was doing was plugging in a tech 2 then a qualified electrician is the way to go. Remember these cars are very common so any...

    Loose crankshaft pulley?

THis is by all means NOT an easy job so if you haven't had much experience with car mechanics I would get some professional help. Getting the pulley off requires two irrating jobs - removing the bolt, and removing the actual pulley... if your car still has the original one on it, it will need...

What would happen to Holden without GM?

I'm pretty sure that successful GM branches such as Saab(?) and Opel would buy Holden Australia out, as its successful Australia and also respected in many middle eastern countries. The new Alloytec engine is a big investment they plan to use world wide. GM is in finacial woes, so they are...

From A VN Calais Cluser to a SS Cluster

The amount of work it would take to swap clusters would be about the same amount of work it would take to change the globes in the back. They are only worth about 50 cents each, and there's four of them.. I'll let you do the math. PLUS, swapping the dash will stop your torque convertor...

anyone had this problem with a calais dash?

No warning lights would _not_ indicate it's wired up incorrectly (as in the level 3 connector) as if its not, you get the non BCM warning lights (oil, ECM check etc), but in your case your getting none, so go back a step. The easiest way to tell if you have a VP dash is to look carefully at...

    Vp blows smoke

Nah, no engine light, listen to sosage, it won't throw an error, just tell the computer to dump lots and lots of petrol, and hence blows smoke. When you put the new sensor in, you should notice your fuel consumption will drop by quite a bit, and i would also reccomend a basic tune up at the...

    God I Love It....

:yeah: Wouldn't say its weird at all. Most people who could be bothered polishing their car do it because they appreciate it. I know when i had my old car i would never find the time or effort to wash it let alone polish it

    1996 Calais.. Good buy?

Yep sounds like a decent price, probably worth about 9-10 normally, maybe a grand more at a dealership. Guessing its a V6, if it's a Series 2 its worth even more.

    Dash questions

Globes are the easiest part - they are called 'dash' globes, and if you goto repco they'll be able to give you the right ones. They are small and they pull out - no screwing required :) Anyway, its not too hard to do, just make sure you check the circuit board is okay before assuming its the...
