I've always found it easier to remove the calliper, makes life easier when using a G-Clamp to wind the piston back in as well. 5 Minutes saved not removing it, will be 5 minutes spent getting the piston back in, or 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.

We use 22LR Rat Shot around sheds/barns for birds and rats, very rarely it leaves a dent/mark on the tin. Use a .177 Crossman semi auto for shooting birds around the house to not damage the eaves.
