Has anyone done a full series 1 to series 2 stereo upgrade on a WM Caprice?

If you can find something that fits in a WM Caprice and still retains all of the tri zone A/C, parking sensor and rear screen DVD functionality......... For less than the cost of a WN Caprice! ;)

    AC problems

VE's have a habit of the A/C vent door control servos failing. Make sure that when you set windscreen, face and floor vents on the controls, that the air is coming out of the correct vents. The A/C can be working perfectly well, but if the vent control doesn't select the centre dash (face)...

Can’t figure out a Gearbox problem

If it's a 5L40 and it feels like it's kicking in and out of overdrive (which might also cancel the cruise control), it's a sign of terminal gearbox failure. If you catch it early enough, you might get away with a gearbox service and a new/recon torque converter. The torque converters crap...

Has anyone done a full series 1 to series 2 stereo upgrade on a WM Caprice?

I've searched and found a few similar posts, but not the information I'm after. I'm going to attempt a series 1 to series 2 upgrade of a WM Caprice stereo. I already have a series 2 stereo, and I know that I will need it reprogrammed to the VIN of the car, as well as needing an adaptor loom...

    VE 2009 SV6 M82 Trans 5-speed (5L40E) changing filter and oil (@ 52000km)

It wasn't cheap, and some would say it wasn't worth it for an older car with a lot of km, but it was just under $5k for a full rebuild. It was my daughter's WM Caprice which we have had in the family for a long time, we know its history and she loves the car. We went with Hasty Auto Trans in...

    VE 2009 SV6 M82 Trans 5-speed (5L40E) changing filter and oil (@ 52000km)

As someone who has recently had a 5L40 completely lunch itself - definitely go for the external trans cooler. I suspect that part of our problem was an internal crack in the radiator, allowing a bit of coolant to get into the transmission fluid - I thought I'd detected it early enough and gone...

Timing Chain - Series 2 VE SV6 Commodore

My son's S11 VE (LLT engine) got to 250,000 km and started to throw a timing chain code every now and then. Use the genuine AC Delco kit. It's worth the extra money for kit quality and peace of mind.

    Ve gearbox not selecting gears

If it's the 5L40 trans, a full rebuild is around the $6k mark.

New Transmission. Peter Page Holden is tied up with Lions Den genuine Holden Parts - the new trans came from their warehouse in Adelaide.

I love this car - but sometimes I think it wants me to hate it!

Heh heh. Climbing out of the rabbit hole, time for an update. The transmission was replaced with a brand new one on 25/10/23, and appears to be driving fine. The warranty ran out on 31/10/23........ PS: I am aware of my rights for statutory warranty and that high value items must be "fit for...

Adelaide based car with a dead transmission near Melbourne - Options?

Hi all. The Caprice is fixed and driven back to Adelaide. The 5L40 trans was completely rebuilt - given their unreliability, I did not want to trust a second hand unit. Not a cheap fix, but at least now it's one less component to worry about on the Daughter's car for a fair while. Thanks all...

I love this car - but sometimes I think it wants me to hate it!

Update. We picked up the car this afternoon, now fitted with a brand new auto transmission. Time to find a holiday destination for a test drive!

Adelaide based car with a dead transmission near Melbourne - Options?

Same thing. Sorry if I was being a bit sloppy in my terminology. And yes, I agree with you. Modern auto transmissions are often thought of as "sealed for life". I think a checkup and fluid change at intervals is not bad insurance.

I love this car - but sometimes I think it wants me to hate it!

We have a 2018 Calais V V6 AWD hatch in Darkmoon blue. Beautiful car to drive, optioned way above anything else in its price range, awesome colour, pampered all of its life so far, but we have a slightly fractured relationship. It has only done around 77,000 km, but in that time, it suffered the...

Adelaide based car with a dead transmission near Melbourne - Options?

Thanks all for your suggestions, comments and interest - it is appreciated. A "mid term update". I'll try to answer people's queries as I go. Luckily we had friends in Melbourne where we could get the car towed to until we could work out what to do. 50 Km of towing From Ballan to west Melbourne...

Adelaide based car with a dead transmission near Melbourne - Options?

In need of some advice. My Daughter drives a V6 2006 WM Caprice. She is currently on a holiday trip to Melbourne, and the auto trans has just died about 50 km west of Melbourne while on her way home to Adelaide. No drive in any gear. The RACV has diagnosed a dead auto trans, and asked where she...

Are all VE steering wheels interchangeable?

We have a series 2 VE Calais V with a slightly worn steering wheel, so we want to get it retrimmed. I have bough another VE Calais steering wheel so we can get it trimmed and still have the car driveable whicle the spare steering wheel is getting trimmed, and then swap them over. I thought I'd...

    The beginning of the end

We had a similar rattle in our Calais V. It sounded like it was the HUD surround, but it ended up being the top of the dash. I cut up a piece of rubber sheet and jammed it in between the top of the instrument cluster and the dash covering the cluster and it has (mostly) gone away. Not that we...

The Super Duper Timing Chain Thread!

Just wanted to add some recent personal experience. We recently bought a VE Series 2 LLT V6 for my son's first car which had timing chain codes coming up every now and then. The previous owner was honest and up front about it, and we negotiated a good deal based on the fact that the chains...

    Tyres

We have a Calais V too. It had Michelin Pilot Sport 4s on it when we bought it (245/35/ZR20s), with approx 5,000 km on them. We got around 30,000 km in total from them, so 35,000 km in total - pretty much commuting driving. They probably still had a few thousand km on them when we changed them...

Series 2 VE Calais V wheel alignment settings?

Hi, I didn't think wheel alignment setting info would be hard to find on this site or the web, but it looks like it is. My son has just bought a Series 2 VE V6 Calais V for his first car (19" rims in case that makes a difference), and I have just had the wheels balanced and a 4 wheel alignment...

Is anyone elses AC compressor noisy?

Our WM V6 has had a noisy compressor for about 180,000 km. I keep expecting it to die completely, but apart from the whirring noise when the A/C is on (goes away when the A/C is turned off), the A/C is working fine. It sounds a lot like the serpentine belt tensioner bearing failing, but in our...

Brake booster software update - recall

I've just rear through the US site description of the fault, and my take on it is; There is nothing inherently faulty with the vacuum assisted brake booster system (ie no widespread mechanical fault). There is a backup safety system that is supposed to kick in if it senses that the vacuum...

Crewman 6 stacker CD radio upgrade.

Hi, My Crewman 6 stacker CD radio has stacked it, and deserves a decent burial. I was thinking of replacing it with an Apple CarPlay compatible head unit which can use the original steering wheel controls, and also offers a rear camera - either included, or as an option. i’ve had a look at a few...

AC Condenser quote and recommended mechanics

Our 2018 ZB Calais has just had an A/C pipe and pressure switch replaced, all under warranty. The dealer picked up a minor leak in the pipe and also around the switch during a 60,000 km service. The A/C was still working fine, but when you looked closely, you could see the green dye around the...

Apple Carplay issue - resolved - I think.

Hi. Just in case anyone else is suddenly having problems with their Apple Carplay - A couple of days ago I decided to update my iPhone 7 to an iPhone 8, so I cloned the 8 off the 7. Both had iOS 15.2.1. The iPhone 7 worked fine with Carplay (2018 ZB Calais V), but no matter what I did, or what...

    Replacement rear compartment courtesy light.

Jack GS, you post triggered a thought, and I searched on Amazon and found some far cheaper than what Holden is quoting - they may not be genuine (they claim to be), but they won't be broken either. Fingers crossed they work ok. I own a few Nissan sports cars too - it's a crazy world when I can...

    Replacement rear compartment courtesy light.

Wow! The plastic interior courtesy light in our Calais (in the hatch/boot area just in front of the passenger tail light) has a broken retaining tab on it, so it keeps falling out. I priced a new one at Holden. Given that it's a piece of plastic with a couple of bits of metal in it to hold the...

Wm statesman/caprice s1 to s2 iq touch screen upgrade

Hi david g - how did you go with this? I have a S1 WM Caprice with a dying head unit (it has stopped playing CDs) so I'm looking at whether to replace it with the same version unit or to try to upgrade it.

Looks like we've just joined the ZB Club.

:) I like that. WN Caprice was still my first choice car wise, but the tech level in the ZB Calais V - plus the lack of price increase of the WN due to the COVID and “Last of the V8s” taxes made the ZB the better value. The look of the ZB is growing on me.

VZ Crewman 5.7 litre LS1 Oil Pressure Issues - wierd symptoms.

In the end, I don't think it was the O ring. I think it was wear and tear on the relief valve piston, from many KM of opening and closing, wearing the piston out of round, and also scuffing the end so that it didn't seal properly. That's the only explanation I can come up with. I ran out of...
