    Alternator output low

    Awesome. Thanks guys!

    VS calais

Engine parts and tune cost me about 5 grand. Still haven't gotten around to dyno-ing it. I'm looking at selling it actually, I've recently bought an FG.

    Alternator output low

Alright I had already bought another second hand alternator so this arvo I replaced the alternator, and the charge cable at once. Voltage drop is now 0.01 volts. That's more like it. However, the voltage across the battery terminals is only about 14.4 volts, which then drops to around 14 as...

    Alternator output low

Ok finally got a chance to play with it. Voltage drop is 0.4 Volts. That seems a lot just for a length of cable.

    Alternator output low

You've got to be kidding me! And wreckers wonder why people load up their pockets... Thanks mate.

    Alternator output low

The alternator on my VS was only putting out 13.8v. Obviously it was failing to charge the battery fast enough for normal commuting. So I replaced the rectifier (I believe) on the back and it was then charging at over 14v. After a few drives it's back down to 13.3v. Something is not right, but...

    Cause of ticking

This is different to normal ceramic coating. Some sort of insulation applied to the inside of the pipes apparently. I've never heard of it personally. He also mentioned that internal modifications exacerbate the problem, which sounds logical.

    Cause of ticking

I just had a reputable exhaust shop have a listen. He thinks the top end sounds great and the tick is the sound of the gasses in the extractors. He gave me a number of a guy who does ceramic insulation on the inside of the pipes. Apparently it makes a world of difference. If I get that done i'll...

    Cause of ticking

Well as long as 2 turns is not risking bottoming out the lifters i'll just leave it and send the bastard to the exhaust shop. The car has landed on the extractors going over speed humps so maybe there's a crack that they could find.

    Cause of ticking

By hand tight I mean nipping it up with a short handle Allen key. But it 2 turns sounds excessive, i'll have to recheck the exact amount of turns because I wasn't sure what the torque specification is on YT ultralites. Does anyone know? I have noticed that the engine is now very smooth while...

    Cause of ticking

Ok I put in a new set of Crow lifters and nothing has changed, when I first tightened up the rockers with the new lifters I counted 2 full turns from zero lash to hand tight (25 Nm?). I'm not entirely sure what the torque spec is on those YT cap screws but either way i'm looking at around 2...

    need help on ecotec..... nnnoooowwwwww

Of course new is ideal. But old mate sounded like he was in a hurry, and local stores may not have them in stock. Sensors from a wrecker are a sure find, and would get him out of trouble.

rear main seal replaced.. still leaking

Can you elaborate on this? What tools are there to align the seal with the main journal? Not being a smart ass, just curious.

    need help on ecotec..... nnnoooowwwwww

You need some MAF/contact cleaner to clean the MAF sensor. Super cheap auto sell that. Simply unscrew the maf sensor and spray the hell out of the insides with the cleaner. See if that clears up the errors. If 76 remains you have have screwed the oxy sensors which you would be best to get from a...

    Heater pipe O rings

The other one is 24502846. Just ordered both of them. I figured for the sake of 12 bucks I dont want to risk the RTV blowing out and dumping the coolant.
  16. M

    Heater pipe O rings

I've tried the black RTV, that didnt last 5 seconds. I might just have to get the genuine ones and then order a bunch of them from a rubber manufacturer for the inevitable next time(s).

    Heater pipe O rings

Where do you guys buy the O rings that go on the heater pipes which lead to the lower intake manifold on the ecotec? Mine seem to need replacing every time I pull the thing apart. Do we just have to go into holden spare parts and bend over every time?

Groaning and clunking from rear end

Cost me $800 for all new bearings, backlash reset, and reshimmed LSD. I had the centre rebuilt with new cones 6 months prior for about $350. So it's much cheaper to do it all at once. By the way, forget doing any burnouts with cone LSD's even if they're tight. I had mine done to 100 ft/lb and...

    T5 speedo issues

I believe you can find them in automatics, my memory fails me but it may be the VR or VS S1 that uses the same speedo sender as the manual T5. Mine leaks fluid out of the sender as well, if you find a solution let me know.

    Slow power windows

My power windows in my VS are getting slower and slower, one has even stopped entirely. I know they would never be as fast as new car's windows, but it sounds as if they are seriously labouring on both the rise and the lower. I've also noticed a voltage drop while the window struggles. What is...

Groaning and clunking from rear end

Thanks mate, i'll grab some tomorrow. Hopefully before the diff blows up. :rofl2:

Groaning and clunking from rear end

I just jacked up one wheel and tried to spin it. Doing this made the groaning noise, but jacking up both wheels didn't. So it must be the LSD cones/clutches are too tight. I suspect I may need to add a friction modifier, thoughts?

Groaning and clunking from rear end

Hi Guys, I just got my LSD diff rebuilt and ever since, there's been a groaning creaking noise coming from the rear while turning, particularly noticeable at low speed. If I turn tight enough I can hear clunking and feel it coming through the gear stick. What the hell does this sound like?

    Diy heads porting and polishing

I did my heads using a Standard Abrasives porting kit, a Super **** die grinder and many many hours. You also pretty much need to get your valve seats re-cut afterwards to be safe.

    vs auto to manual

^ This. If you get lights and then go for ignition and nothing at all happens it is your immobiliser. You can try letting it pause a little longer on the reds or jiggle it a little to make sure there is contact with the electronic key head. If it was the starter jamming or the drive line...

    My sweet new ride

Sup guys Just picked up this VL for $500 as a run around car for now, but i'll probably turn it into a mean project car once i'm not so strapped for cash. The main problem is when I do fishies, the back end has too much roll so i'm thinking I might have to cut some coils off the...

    [Ecotec] V6 Heavy duty clutches

Honestly I haven't even run it on the dyno. I will if someone can recommend a place in western sydney. It's a custom delco tune to suit the cam also.

    My custom airbox design

He may have meant the little air temp sensor on the side of the standard air box. If so, that just dangles inside now with cable ties :)

    Cause of ticking

Thanks MACE, I'm pretty skeptical about sound deadening. That would be a band-aid fix. I'll probably have to take the plunge and get the lifters (yes pun). FYI I noticed while running the motor with the rocker covers off that there was bugger all oil coming out of the rockers. Some rockers...

    Cause of ticking

Ok I just shot 100 PSI up the exhaust pipe and got under the car with soapy water. I found some leaks around the flanges which I have repaired with new gaskets, bolts and high temp silicone. The noise is still identical so it wasn't that. MACE, if I buy your CROW lifters do you have the specs...

    [Ecotec] V6 Heavy duty clutches

I'm using a 1300kg pressure plate on my T5. Things are breaking. :hmmm:
  32. M

    Cause of ticking

I found something out today, I stuck it in 5th at 50km/h, obviously engine speed dropped to about 800 RPM but no ticking at all! It had never been quieter. Why does this occur, when it does tick at idle 800 RPM? Does the extra labour on the engine tighten up the valve train?
  33. M

    Cause of ticking

Here's a movie I made of the noise. It's most distinct under the car, as it avoids the rest of the engine noise. MVI 0028 - YouTube
  34. M

    Cause of ticking

Skimming of the deck and heads was very minimal. I don't remember exact figures, but it was purely for an even surface, not to gain comp. Head gaskets are ACL monotorque. Springs and retainers are 130 lb. Crow and LS1 retainers from MACE. Yes I have a suspicion they may just be crap...

    Cause of ticking

I'm using "Nason" brand lifters. Apparently an aussie company, cost me about $150 for the set. I dont know how to determine preload, but i'm using the Yella Terra ultralite 1.6 RR's with the pushrods and pedestals supplied.
  36. M

    Cause of ticking

Well see if it was something that EVERY ecotec did, I'd just have to live with it or sell the car. But some don't, so it cant be simply a design characteristic. I can't help but think, is there a way I can temporarily disable the PCV and just vent it to see if that is ticking?
  37. M

    Cause of ticking

Ok it makes the same noise without the belt, and disconnecting an injector just slowed the ticking due to the idle dropping slightly. I bought a stethoscope but I can hear the noise anywhere on the engine, it is at its loudest up near the manifold.
  38. M

    Cause of ticking

All journals (mains and big end) were within spec for STD bearings, verified by a dummy assembly with plastigauge. Small end bearings were replaced and reamed to size. But I will try the injector idea, thanks for that! Oils i've tried are 10W 40, 10W 50, 15W 60, 20W 60. I've got an oil...
  39. M

    Cause of ticking

I've replaced the lifters twice to no avail, once before the engine rebuild. So unless dodgy lifters are very common, it's not failing lifters. Ticks with roller rockers or without. It is not the timing chain as i'm running a double row with no tensioner and no balance shaft. Replaced idler...

    Cause of ticking

So we're all aware of the Ecotec tick. I'm wondering if MACE has worked this one out, it has to be valve train related as my engine ticked from the get-go after a rebuild, which rules out bearings or worn components. This was very disappointing as the noise was a key motivator for a rebuild...
