In my opinion if your temperature dial goes up at all, even for a second, then there is something wrong with your cooling system. A hot day should not affect it at all, normal operation temp should be 85 to 95 degrees, then when idling it may reach 104 before the fan kicks in and brings it...

When you changed the coolant did you bleed the system of air? You can think the cooling system is full, but boy it can sure hold alot of air in there, you may even need to do it a few times to make sure it is all out.

if your oil is milky, id say your head gasket is past on its way out, and is most certainly the reason you car is overheating as the coolant is just leaking into the block

It should be idling at around 750rpm give or take 50 when at operating temperature and should feel smooth, even with the air con on.

have you checked your oil to see if coolant/water getting in ?

well i did the coolant change today, and all went very smooth. blasting the heater hose to flush the block seem to work at treat, got lots of crap out of it.

Fan speed Resistor, located behind the glovebox will be the problem. Buy them brand new from holden (currently out of stock aust. wide) or pick one up at the wreckers.

Hi banga, they are behind the glovebox on the right hand side, simply unclip the electrical connection and undo by 2 screws, the ones on the berlina have a white face, and i think the standard air cons have a black face.

Does it have any kind of service history? Id take a car with high k's and full service history over a car with lower k's and no service history any day of the week.

Sounds like bushes to me too, probably the ones connecting the strut bar to the control arms, a quick inspection with the tyre's off will confirm either way. I just replaced mine, $55 replacement kit from Repco, they now come with bends in the rod and different shaped bushes
