if the speedo and tacho are set out to the same measurements, you could get the triple window cluster, then take it apart a bit as well as ur SS cluster and just swap over the coloured backing plates, as far i know they are the same layout. Someone may be able to correct me the sets out.

otr would be better but in the same position i wouldn't respend that amount of money to get a gain that would barely be noticed. depends on how much value you place on small gains really.

yep, the speedo is all controled by the computer, only difference between the 2 will be that as mentioned the shifter surrounds will be different.

don't think the old mate is chasin power! just do what i did in my ss, unbolt the cats, get a piece of reinforcing bar about 500mm long and just go to town on the cat, bash it out into a plastic bag and bin it!

If memory serves me right the tail shafts are different between utes and sedans. someone might correct me.

With a VU SS as they are getting a bit dated there's going to be a lot of wear and tear parts going soon, so check all the normal things. I'd honestly pay RACV to come out and inspect the car for you before you buy, as it will tell you definitively if there are any problems with the car.

yeah as acarmody said check the vacume lines they can make the car idle incredibly poorly. short of that i don't know. good luck with the fix!
