    Installing own exhaust

Just wanted to say that tip about using a jack to crack the cat bolts was gold! Just make sure you put a block of wood above the bolts so the whole exhaust doesn't get lifted and all force gets applied to the bolt.

    Temp gauge reading to high.

Just under 1/2 while driving is a little higher than my VS which sits on just over 1/4 at speed. The gauge will climb up to 3/4 though when the fan kicks in at traffic lights (if there long enough). I wouldn't worry though as long as the fan kicks in around the 3/4 mark and can bring the temp...

Advice on coolant loss and head damage

Hi all, My brother's 2002 VX has coolant loss and he took it to a mechanic who said the heads are rooted. There was a rupture in the radiator. It's going to be a $4500 repair bill. A couple of questions. 1) I thought the VX has a coolant fluid level or am I thinking of the VY? 2) I...

VS V6 ticking all of a sudden

Glad you got it sorted. Yeah I seem to remember pricing the lifters up many years ago and they were quite expensive. Well worth trying other methods before replacement.

VS V6 ticking all of a sudden

I know this isn't what you asked but it may help... I've never taken the cover off to see if my engine has the gunk but two things that have worked for me is lifter additive then a big drive and the brand of oil. 5 years or so I had the ticking sound and as it coincided with the timing of...

    Garden hose and running engine?

Thanks guys. That's great the heater tap isn't an issue when the engine is off. The top heater pipe seems to connect just below the thermo housing at the top of the engine. Does that mean I could use that connection to flush both the heater core and block? Thanks

    Garden hose and running engine?

Thanks guys, this was the info I was after. Getting the coolant out of the heater core was why I wanted to run while engine on but I'll fill with clean water and then start to open tap and circulate, let it cool down and repeat until clean.

    Garden hose and running engine?

I'm about to change coolant on my VS and my bro's VY. His water is particularly dirty so I want to flush it properly to get all the **** out. I'm gong to clear out the block, radiator and heater core as written here but I'd like to then run the engine with the hose to really give it a good...

    Why 5 litre coolant bottles?!

Thanks VX, I'll check it out.

    Why 5 litre coolant bottles?!

Thanks Hot-Rod. That makes sense. I guess as my bro's VX has dirty coolant I'll have to get that topup bottle as it'll need a full flush. Out of interest, does anyone know how easy it is to remove the overfow tank of the S2 VX? Thanks

    Why 5 litre coolant bottles?!

I see most brands have coolant designed for the Commodore series which has taken 12 litres of 50/50 for years now (at least ecotec range). So why are they are 5 litres? Do you guys just run slightly less than the recommended ratio or do you get a 1 litre "topup" bottle? Interested to know....

    Speedo reading low

OK, I took the speedo unit apart including the centre threaded plastic guide and lubed it all up with silicon spray. I also widened the hole slightly in the guide as it looked like I slightly bent the pin when removing the needle when I fixed my odo cog. Put it all back and noticed that...

    Speedo reading low

Yeah that's exactly what it does...does that mean that the mechanism needs lubrication? Has anyone managed to fix this or do I need a new speedo? BTW, Holden quoted me $470 just for the speedo unit!!!

    Speedo reading low

Hey guys, I've compared my cluster speedo to the speed warning unit and its lower by about 5kms. When I bang the dash it comes up and reads correctly. I've tried soldering the voltage regulator as has been suggested but no good. Is there anything I need to do to the speedo unit itself...

    Quick cluster question

Thanks. What about starting/driving the car with surround (headlight/AC/hazard buttons) removed? Any idea if that is ok? Thanks

    Quick cluster question

Can the VS be started and moved short distances without the Level 2 (that has tacho right?) attached? If not, can it be easily reattached so it's drivable but able to be removed easily? Planning on taking it apart tonight to check the cog as odo is busted but need to move her tomorrow...

    Transmission problems - advice

OK, reporting back. After the usual shennigans I have with getting the damn level right (it's supposed to be easy right?), I've taken her for a spin and all feels good. Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions!

    Transmission problems - advice

Hey Hako, Yeah dropped the pan and the filter and seal came along with it! As greenacc suggested, I used a hammer and flat metal rod to beat the seal into position. I still managed to remove some of the rubber from the base of the seal but not where the filter comes in contact so hopefully...

    Transmission problems - advice

Started the car when i got home and within seconds I can see bubbles in the ATF. After I first did a service I drove 24kms and ATF was perfect. As there are no leaks, it has to be seal or filter IMHO as can't be foaming from too low or high. I left the car running long enough to put her...

    Transmission problems - advice

Thanks for response. I did all those things you mentioned. Old seal was removed, used Dex111 and the pan was spotless. I did disconnect a return line to drain the pan but I checked and verified that it isn't leaking. The only issue I can think of is the seal not going all the way up but it...

    Transmission problems - advice

Hi Guys, It's been 2 weeks since I serviced my transmission and all has been ok. Just yesterday I noticed the first gear change after starting was strange...like it was slipping. Seemed to be ok after that. This morning, it was really slipping in both reverse and drive. I just got out of...

Trans service, not sure where oil went...

All looks ok now. After a long drive it's slightly over full but not too much so I'll leave as is. Thanks for all the help guys.

Trans service, not sure where oil went...

Yeah I've dumped in another 200ml so I'll take her for a spin tomorrow and check. Thanks

Trans service, not sure where oil went...

Hey Oz, The car has the standard auxiliary cooler in front of the radiator. I did loosen the top radiator hose to pump out the ATF but I did collect it all so still a total of 4.8 litres lost in the service.

Trans service, not sure where oil went...

Hey Haks, thanks for the input. I thought I drained most of the oil from the filter but now that I think of it, the newspaper I used while dicken with the seal could have absorbed a fair bit...I'll add another 100ml and go for a drive. Thanks

Trans service, not sure where oil went...

Thanks for the response. I'd say 8cm for the pan, definitely under 5litres out. filter looked identical to the original . Thanks

Trans service, not sure where oil went...

Hey Guys, I'm stumped...need some advice. I've just done my transmission service, all went well except it was a right pain in the arse to get the filter seal out. My oil pan shows I removed around 4.8 litres of ATF. I closed everything back up and added 4.5 litres. Went for a drive...

    Source new seat belt assembly

Thanks, I'm in Perth. I tried a few wreckers yesterday but they were closed. I'm also speaking a forum member who may be able to help. Any idea what something like that would cost from the wreckers? Thanks

    Source new seat belt assembly

The back right seat belt is buggered in my VS exec. I've spoken to two Holden dealers and both have confirmed that the part is no longer available. For safety reasons, I'm reluctant to get one second hand or from the wreckers but am starting to think that may be my only option. Anyone got...

    Adjusting stablizer link pins

Thanks, So if just the top two bushes are loose, do I just need to tighten the top nut while stopping the pin from turning?

    Adjusting stablizer link pins

I've had a knock when turning in my car for about 8 years, I've had the bushes on the stabilizer bar replaced but that didn't fix it. I decided to look at it myself on the weekend and noticed that the right side link bushes up the top are pretty loose. Left side are much tighter. Can...

    Oil on plug threads..valve covers?

Hey guys, I've been noticing some poor engine performance lately so I've taken the plugs out to inspect them. They seem fine but all of them have their threads covered in oil. The plug wells also have oil so I'm guessing its from an external source and not from the cylinders. I'm going...
