    Air con drain holes VT

Thanks mate, should've asked if someone had replaced the heater core. You've actually seen the parts so that'll do me.Fingers crossed I'll sort it on Sat. I haven't considered the core because it only happens when the humidity is really high.I ran the thing for 2 hours this morning,heater...

    Castrol Magnatec vs Mobil 1

I use 10/40 Valvolene semi synthetic. 470,000km quiet as a mouse tells me it must be ok.Since 400k I reduced the interval between changes from 10k to 7.5k. I reckon that chice of filters filters (genuine) has probably been more important than my choice of oil.

    Replacing coils question?

Absolutely. Check Holmart online store to check the price plus there are heaps on ebay (just make sure that they're genuine and new) A coil pack (DFI + 3 coils) will probably cost you less than 3 individual coils My Execs done 470,000km and I've replaced 2 coil packs and have been rewarded each...

    Air con drain holes VT

Thanks wrx884,I'll have a look on Saturday and see if I can do it properly this time. For interest sake I believe that the VR has one on each side.

    Air con drain holes VT

Thanks accentstencil, that's what I suspect too but would prefer to find that I hadn;t found something rather than that I'd done a crap job.I Think that perhaps I was fooled into believing that I'd cleared it well enough because of the amount of water that was draining out. Then again it was a...

    VT Ecotec stuttering under load

Don't ignore the possibility of a DFI module.I reckon plugs and/or leads may be most likely but my Vt has done a lot of k's (470,000) but I,ve replaced a couple of coil packs in that time.

    Air con drain holes VT

Wondering if someone knows for certain how many drain holes there are for the A/C evaporator overflow in a VT.I've located one on the passenger side of the transmission tunnel and it appears to be clear and drops plenty of water but if I run the A/C,especially with fresh air,I still end up with...

New tyres for a '01 VX Commodore S

I have 235/45/17's on my Exec and previously I'd run Dunlop SP Fast Response which I thought were pretty good. Don't everyone laugh at once but last year I fitted a set of "HiFly 805's".Ridiculous name but....in a word ...great!!! The Dunlops cost me $250 each and I was thrilled when I managed...

L67 + LSD Towing Caravan around Australia

Mate,I also don't know if you're going to average 10km per litre towing a van.I know that this isn't what your thread is really about but if you manage 6km/l you should be thrilled.I've done extensive towing, including Brisbane to Darwin each year with a big tinnie, 2 adults and bugger all in the...

    Ecotec Coil pack Intermittent

Have you checked for spark at the plugs?I personally can't imagine your problem being a coil pack.Check the plug/wiring to the crank angle sensor. There are many threads explaining how to do a fault diagnosis with a paper clip so you might wish to do that before spending any cash.Good luck

    VX DFI & Coil Pack

I just checked Holmart but couldn't find a coil pack.Another suggestion if you're concerned about buying online would be Bursons Spare Parts.I think your closest will be Townsville or Brisbane From memory a coill pack (3 coils and the DFI module) are around $370 plus freight from them.Genuine...

    VX DFI & Coil Pack

For genuine parts at a reasonable price go online to Holmart. You can get them even cheaper elsewhere and most of them are genuine but for peace of mind I'd suggest Holmart cos they've been around forever.Delivery may take a couple of days longer than some of the other online suppliers.

    lagging automatic gear change

These gearboxes are very sensitive to engine tune.Probably due for a service but it's very likely that a new set of plugs and leads and possibly a coil pack will help considerably. If the clunk still seems excessive then check your gearbox and engine mounts.Good luck

    VT Commodore Radio Code

If you haven't had the car since new there's a chance that the radio may have been replaced. If it has been replaced with one from the wreckers the code may be written on the back.Has to be worth a look.

how many kms on your ecotec?

VT Exec, just clicked over 450,000,all original drive train,no weird noises or oil usage.I just replaced all suspension except for springs cos the car feels like another 450,000 is not out of the question. The car's been really well serviced and has never been flogged.

    V6 Mystery Power Problem

For my money your mechanic has hit it on the nose. These things are notorious for chewing through coils. You are far better off replacing the pack(3 coils + DFI module),rather than replacing individual coils.Insulating your plug leads helps them to last longer but at the end of the day they're...

    Brown sludge under radiator cap

Pablo's right. The pellets contain wax,as a lubricant,(hence the name wax pellets)and they contain a filler, similar to Barrsleaks, which will help fill pin holes in the radiator and heater core. But while we're on heater core,it is also a very likely source of sludge. If the heater isn't used...

    VT Thermofan problem

Sorry mate, missed that at the start of the thread.Hopefully not,cos it's a pain in the butt but I had a similar problem earlier this year which was fixed by replacing the BCM.I also had an airbag light that no matter how many times the error was cleared would end up coming back on.That too was...

    Brown sludge under radiator cap

You could just do all of the above.New water pump, new inlet manifold gaskets etc etc or you could thoroughly flush the cooling system to remove any left over sludge from pellets, rusting heater core or whatever else and then keep a close eye on it for a few days.If your gaskets are crook there...

    Scratched wheel remedy?

Once you take the wheel/s off it all becomes a lot easier and providing you take plenty of care with the masking up you'll be pretty thrilled with the result.I have just bought a set of new (second hand) wheels that need repairs and I"m sort of looking forward to doing them.Just a hint.When...

    VT Thermofan problem

Sound like they're working just fine.I far as I'm aware both fans operate at low speed and again, both fans operate at high speed. My Exec has never become hot enough for the fans to come on at low speed for more than a few seconds, just like you described off/on/off etc and they only come on at...

VT Not running on all cylinders

I've never had much luck checking coils so to be certain just swap 2 coils to see if it,s the same cylinder that's lacking power. As Tree cutter said,a white plug tip will tell you that your injector may be blocked. If it's an injector that's not a big deal either but you do want to know for sure...

    VX Tappet adjustment

If you remove your rocker covers you will probably notice that some of the rockers will have a burnt appearance.Don't use a heavier grade oil.Change your oil more frequently, especially for the next few services, and use an engine flush and then a top quality oil (perhaps 10w40).You're obviously...

Car is missing and has no power when i accelerate

Perhaps TPS,can you borrow one? It's not too expensive and very simple to replace but you wouldn't change it unless it's faulty.Dual fuel can add a few more possibilities into the equation but again except for plugs and leads you don't want to just start replacing bits with a "Change enough parts...

vt trans not going into 4th (D) untill 75kms an hour.drops back to 3rd under that

I've been wrong before but I think that in this instance,if you fit a new set of leads and plugs and see if you can borrow a coil pack to check your coils and DFI(before actually buying them)there's more than a small chance that your tranny will come back to life There are heaps of threads on...

    Check Alternator / Engine Warning

Just a thought, whereabouts are you.If I ever have a problem that I can't nut out and I need to check for error codes,Peter at Timelord in Thorneside has never charged me anything to plug in his Tech 2.If he finds something though I get him to do the job cos he's really reasonable and I don't...

    :( cracked strut tower

It sounds like you have a good car.not some dangerous piece of crap that we don't want on the road. You don't have to take the car "over the pits".You just need an RWC from a mechanic who's licenced to write one.I'd look for a half dodgy car yard (you have your choice from dozens up here)and find...

    Just bought my VX today

Wheels and tyres would have to be the best single mod you can make to most cars without spending really ridiculous amounts of money.I'm with monkeys 437,I reckon the standard taillights look great and except for a set of stock Monaro lights,I think that anything else looks straight out poxy.

Forget all the crap and start off by servicing your car,inc plugs and leads possibly and then get to know the thing. You'll have plenty of time to consider silly lights and all the other non/stock stuff(some of it may actually be very useful) a bit later on.Congrats, now enjoy. If you have a pocket...

    Road trip to syndey?

    1998 vt commo overheating???

If the thermostat is in good nick and is the correct thermostat, then your engine should reach operating temperature quite quickly. It should not run hot!!! and if everything is spot on it won't.As Jonah 101 said you should not be having these problems when it's been to a radiator shop.
  38. S

    1998 vt commo overheating???

It's not "normal" for any car to overheat and if you don't want to be replacing head gaskets,or worse still heads, then it's really preferable that they don't.Anyway ,I'm very relaxed,as always but, forgetting that last night was Friday night and anyone younger than me(I'm told that that is almost...

    1998 vt commo overheating???

Just another point to note;make sure that you thoroughly bleed the system .There is a bleeder valve on top of the thermostat housing. The engine must be at operating temperature to allow the thermostat to open (which can be sped up a bit by turning on the A/C and you should turn your heater on to...

    1998 vt commo overheating???

I can't believe that no one has replied to your thread.Anyway,I haven't replaced a thermostat for years (must be luck) so I don't remember exactly if you will have an "o"ring or a gasket or both so here goes.Firstly you were correct, you don't have to use a 30cm extension to tighten the bolts but...
