Personally i dont even reckon well make it through the group stages, Brazil, Croatia and Japan...good luck...

Pretty much the same thought, if we can win a match in our group than Australia will do well.Originally Posted by _Mukas_

i'd love to see australia kick butt in the world cup, but im sorry to say that i don't think they will. a couple of factors that contribute to this: 1. they're inexperienced in world cup matches (not including the qualifiers, i mean the real thing, this current team hasn't got the experience, so that definitely won't help) 2. The team is not as good as the others in its group
i wish the best of luck to the team, and really hope to see them do well
i think everyone would love for the aussies to do well, and i think it will be a pleasent suprise for some to see just how much Guus Hiddink has improved the squad, but...realistically we shouldnt beat brazil or croatia with japan the only one we may get close to, mind you they were 2-0 up on germany and ended with a 2-2 draw, so they are a good side. we play the dutch on sunday and this will give us, if nl play a full side, a half idea of where we're at...

Australia shouldn't even be allowed in the world cup, they are like canada to the World Cup of cricket

Now that's just harsh, it's good that Aus is finally back in the Cup.
I think Australia has a realistic chance of making it past the group, all they have to do is win one game and they will be in with a shot, and Croatia and Japan are not that crash-hot ... so who knows, i guess we will find out in a little over a week.
we have the number 1st, 18th and 23rd ranked sides in the world in our group...wouldnt call that "not that crash hot"... we will have to play better soccer than we have ever played (which is possible under Hiddink, the mans a freak) to even think about competing, let alone beating them. we are a side on the improve, no doubt, but we have to have improved a hell of a lot from the greece game to stand a chance. the game against the netherlands should be 'interesting'Originally Posted by Jimboss
oh, and although greece are ranked number 20 in the world and we beat them here 1-0, they are on the slide after winning euro 2004, they havent even qualified for the world cup.

Well you Guys are forgetting the ozzie spirit! Aussie Aussie Aussie , Oi Oi Oi! Plus half our team is made up of european league players lol. We Will Win and be the greatested the world has ever seen. Plus it's another excuse to piss up hahaha.
i think people may be surpised, we most certianly wont win against brazil, we have a chance against croatia and japan i reckon, im a aussie threw and threw, dont get me wrong, but i wanna see brazil get up and do it again.
so i do think we may scrape threw in our pool matches, but id say thats about it.
only time will tell, good experience for us as a young team, and we can only get better

You kinda ruined your arguement with that second statement, But you have highlighted a very important point, the FIFA rankings are not always spot on, we were about 20 or so behind Uruguay (not sure exactly), and we beat them. And like you said Greece is on the slide, but so are Japan, they gave gone downhill since the last Cup, despite their good result with Germany (who i think are over-rated aswell, but let's not go into thatOriginally Posted by _Mukas_
).
So to sum up my opinion, Because it's a group format ... anything can happen (including Australia making it past the first round).
its just putting different aspects in thats all, it kinda sounds contradictory but tone is something that cant be read.
noone really knows how we are going to go because we havent been there for 32 yrs, the side is young and inexperienced, yet confident in there abilities. Ronaldinho said we wont be 'easy beats' in todays AGE so theres some credit from the brazilians, after ronaldo's 'i dont know who harry kewell is' comments. lol
either way it will be watched with great interest as to see where we are in regard to the game itself, and our progress (which would be decent considering we have Hiddink) within the sport.
it is possible for us to make it through the group stages no doubt, but its gonna be bloody hard. defending champs france, in there last cup, didnt score a goal in the entire group stage, so anything can happen.

With the calibre of the players in our team we do have the potential to make it through a few rounds. Will that happen? Who knows.
Our biggest problem is the lack of experience as a team but we do have one of the World's best coaches. Remember what he did with Korea?
One thing you can guarantee is that we will not be thrashed by anybody, we may lose games but we will not be embarassed.
World Cup experience what exactly does that entail?
Most of our players have played in front of huge crowds week in week out for their current teams so the crowds shouldn't be an issue.
It is the World Cup so every player from every team will be under great pressure to perform the best they can. Doesn't matter if you played in the last World Cup, you are still going to be under that pressure.
I don't think we can win but I will be backing our team no matter how far they get and I will be proud of their efforts.
Go the Aussies

well, just watched the friendly match between the orange people and australia. 1-1 was the score.
aussie pretty slack in the first half, defence was full of holes.
dutch had a majority of ball possesion
2nd half, australia looked like a stick of dynamite had been put up their butts. they played heaps better. we scored a goal of a vidulka missed penalty shot.
well done to the aussies.
we held of and scored against the number 3 team, im extreamly impressed with that effort. ill be behind the aussies, we wont win the world cup, but by golly by gosh we will be causing a few up-sets along the way.
cheers
garth
oh, and we finished the last 25 minutes with one man being sent off, so no-more 1-1 play.

Chances are about as likely as all so called Aussies barracking for for the country they are actually living in and not the one where their parents were born I reckon.

to draw 1-1 with the number 3 ranked side in the world just goes to show that with a world class manager at the helm and a pretty decent list, we can match it with the best of them...after seeing this, i wouldnt expect us to make it through the group stages but wont be surprised if we do.
go aussies
