As such they developed a number code, the code for the Ruler of the time was '666' so them saying '666 is the sign of the devil' would be like someone saying that 'GWB is the anti-christ'. now in our context most people would guess I am speaking about 'dubya', (notice how I don't accutally say his name). But if someone was reading this is 1000 years they might lose the context.
