For anyone that is running Windows XP, the new service pack 2 that Microsoft has produced is not worth downloading at the moment. Too many problems have ben found so far and you will find that some of you other programs will need a patch as well. These problems have occurred in burn programs such as "NERO" and "CLONE". If you can, hold off for a bit longer till all problems have been sorted.
Very funny Scotty. Now "beam" me up my clothes
yes, the choice for the service pack is weather you want the extra security...but it is faily easy to put the patches in fo the programs that stop working...service pack 2IS worth getting but only if yuo want to fiddle round with the patches, there is a list of programs that are affected ill see if i can get that link.
Reason y to get it

Thats all right, thats ok, I drive a commodore anyway!!!!
Unless your running a server/network, the upgrade ain't worth getting. I run a network with win XP on a win98 shell and haven't even upgraded with SP1. Aslong as you run a firewall (black ICE, symantec's) and haven't got any hardware issues, winXP with SP1 is fine. Also the SP2 initiates its firewall from the get go, this l can see as an issue as sometimes with networking/broadband the firewall can cause conflicts. The only advantage l see is the pop up block.... but who really needs that?

it keeps everything intergrated and saves time but the power of the firewall will not be as good as a good brand stand alone one

Well I don't think I'll get it for a while, Firewall is stand alone and theres an external hardware one on top of that, not too worried about security, as for pop ups, just using mozilla, I don't even want IE installed on my system anymore.
I'll get it eventually, but I couldn't give a rats atm.
Have been running the XP SP2 since the RC1 (beta) about 3 months ago on 2 computers, with no probs. (the 2 computers are networked via an ADSL modem/router) I find that if you apply the SP2 to a clean system ie run all adware/virus checkers, delete unwated programs & defrag before install, you should end up with a very stable system.
Just my experience!

I wouldn't bother now. I've never been one to worry about security though, I spend most of my time on computers, working with them etc, and I've never had a virus. If you use your computer properly you shouldn't need to worry. That is why I dont really care about SP2, plus the fact that Microsoft never gets anything right the first time, so maybe when they release SP3 for XP then I'll install the current revision of SP2.

mum downloaded the service pack the other day and its caused havoc with that much stuff its not funny. its pissing me off. i think that she thinks that the service pack is THE best thing to download AS SOON AS it comes out. she doesnt worry about waiting until they fix all the bugs cause she must think the service pack fixes all the bugs from XP. damn i could slap her right now :P
I ordered the CD from microsoft....wont get it for about amonth...so ill see how things progress with it :P

Ive been running SP2 on our 3 computers at home for a fair while now including my brand new laptop and a 5 year old system and have not had a single problem from it.

I don't know whether I like SP2, I am usually one for security updates etc even if they are from Microsoft but this particular one I am not convinced it is rock solid.
Here's something I experienced; shortly after installing SP2 and rebooting after around 10 minutes I lost connectivity to my network ie couldn't ping my loop back, internal machines or obviously external sites, I thought no worries we'll disable the LAN connection and re-enable it, at this point the system became non responsive so I had no alternative but to whack the reset button which is very very unusual for any of my systems.
I tried removing drivers, adjusting flow control and duplex settings which made no difference so I thought it's been 6 months since I re-imaged this system so I went to re-image the system to find problems with the image so I decided to format and start from scratch with my slipstreamed XP SP2 CD to find it did exactly the same thing. At this point I knew it was either a hardware issue or SP2 itself, I thought well not much we can do I may as well install the rest of the apps and stuff.
To my amazement after installing every app on my system things have been perfectly fine so this one has got me beat, it’s now been up for just over 4 days without any problems.
To top it off I had a customer ring up at work who had exactly the same problem so there is certainly something weird going on that's for sure. I have grabbed his contact details so I’m going to give him a buzz and see what Microsoft suggested to him as despite being a qualified Network Admin / Computer Tech this one was beyond me.
