Hi All,
Well it's been an interesting evening / night to say the least.
Sorry about the downtime, some of you may recall we had an outage going back about a week where the server just shut off with no warning. It seems this was the beginning of the problem.
Earlier in the evening the server just bogged down completely and dropping the speed of the processor back to cope which it obviously didn't. When the logs were bought up it was complaining about the CPU fan not running and the temps were going through the roof as you could imagine.
In I went to change the CPU fan and thought that would all over, how could I be so wrong! I got home some 20 minutes later to find the machine had died again, this time I couldn't even login to it remotely.
Back in I go to find what seemed to be the CPU fan not spinning at all, as these blow directly on to the CPU it makes it very hard to tell so I plugged in another no go and another no go, using the exhaust fan blowing across the CPU and heatsink whilst I thought up alternatives I realised the spare fans which were bought had the negative and positive around the wrong way so off to find a jewelers screwdriver I went, sure enough that was the problem and fingers crossed all is OK from here on.
Once again I'm sorry but these chain of events you don't expect to happen.
Cheers
Darren
it wasn't ur fault so cheers for getting it fixed![]()
It's amusing now but at the time I wasn't as you could imagine, more or less scratching my head thinking why on earth aren't these fans working.
Not being able to touch the heatsink for longer than a second made it very very difficult to swap the fan but all seems well enough this morning.
Out of curiosity if anyone knows of a managed host with generous amount of bandwidth and around I would very much like to hear from them.
