How to do a search properly

Ummm.... this is probably a dumb question but can somebody tell me how to do a search properly. I always do a search before asking questions but I get page after page of unrelated ****.
Eg trying to find out how to test a fuel sender. I've tried
"testing fuel sender"
testing AND fuel AND sender
testing+fuel+sender

Am I doing something wrong???

i also have this problem!!! i found that changing the search prefernces to things like 'search titles only' can help a bit, but its still difficult, i supose patience is the key!
