    Default Suggestion: JC Shoutbox?

Hey guys, Im not sure if this has been suggested in the past but I have been on other forums (non car ones) and they have a Shoutbox. I think they are good because its like an instant msging service to whomever is on the JC site. So if you are working on your car and you need to shout out for a little help you can. Its also good for general discussion. I don't know too much on how its set up or how hard it is, but I can say they are fun and helpfull.

If you don't know what the hell im talking about, here is an example of one.

I think there used to be a chat room as part of the sites main page, but there was no interest in it so it got scrapped.

I can see how it could be helpful, but I think there'd be a huge problem with it just being used for crap talk more than technical stuff.

Personally I can also see it being turned into crap talk too. If you are in need of urgent technical help then post up a thread, a thread also serves as a record for other people to refer to and response times on people asking for help are pretty good these days.

As mentioned, we have tried chat rooms in the past and I have seen shout boxes on other sites and it seems that they are infrequently used by the majority of members and only serve as entertainment for a few who remember that it is there. Stick to MSN or IRC chat I reckon.

Why would it be a huge problem for crap talk though?

Yeah, msn etc is good. But this like like multiple chat for people who would like to discuss technical issues (I agree posting is better because of the records too). It would make JC more active, woudn't you agree. Some general discussion in the Shoutbox would be fun.

People would just use it for silly stuff. And with the amount of members that use the site, and only a small box for the messages, it could be hard to have any sort of conversation with it.

And my main reason for say that crap talk could be a problem was that your main 'selling' point to the admin team was that it could be useful for someone to receive mechanical help asap.

Just for example, someone that isn't known to well round the forum asks a valid question, but it goes unnoticed coz a few members or what not are too busy dribbling crap. And I doubt it would take too long before a few conversations go to far, and cross the line. But thats what I thinking if there was to be one for technical help reasons only.

If it were there for no main purpose and just for something different, then it might be a bit of fun. But you also have to consider the censorship side of things. I doubt word filters and such would apply to shoutboxes or whatever they are called (I forget )

Personally, I wouldn't care if there was one or not, but would it be worth putting one up for a trial?

I suggested this before the members lounge area was trialled earlier on. To be honest I don't think it would be good, I think after seeing how crap the members lounge was that the shoutbox would be worse. I think we have too many immature members for it to be a success and it would require too much moderation.
