i mentioned this in another thread but i doubt any mods noticed, so i thought id post it here. i was thinking that it would be a good idea for JC to have a section dedicated to ecu tuning. at the moment there are way too many threads on tuning/memcals/chips/ecu's in every section of the forum, and its hard to find the information im after when searching for them. could we put all these threads in one section, with a few of the important ones stickied?
im sure it would stop countless threads on the same topics, and less PM's to people like doctor bob and greenfoam

brilliant idea!
......
use the wiki!
... and find those other therads and paste the contents of it into the wiki for a start.
Im going to make a stand here.
The idea of a wiki is to have a stand alone mass user manageable knowledge base.
If we start using it as a point of informaiton, we loose the point of the forum.
A better idea is to document the solutions better. Moderators need to be divided into policy and ocntent.
Content mods are resoponsible for migrating and deleting threads with simlar points and to creat solutions for the already found solved ones.
Ie. Round up all 11,000 manual conversion threads, consoidate any relevant info and post a solution.
If we start out sourceing all the data to the wiki it will become a stretch between the forum and the wiki.
The wiki should be about the site, what we do and some links.
Now, we could run a FAQ Twiki on the JC Server and have publisied solutions there however thats more work and more load too..
A tuning section is a good idea so long as it remains a general tuning section and not 5 million sub forums about the different ecu's bcm's and other electronic units.
My solution? Hire me as a freelance, unpaid content moderator and internal Twiki tech and ill do it for nothing. Ill merge content and publish founded solutions.
Its a good deal!
oh and vote#1 for tuning section.

Edit, relised the wiki is already on jc domain so thats not an issue however the rest of my post still is valid.

If you ever work on an RB motor and/or do some wiring, or convert a RB30 to a RB30ET, or need to know how to convert from auto to maunal on an r31.... you'll appreciate how valuable the above link is
I would have throught getting all the good knowledge and info that comes from the discussion within the forums, and cataloging it into a central knowledge-base made sense.
Saves people having to go through countless threads and jumping from thread to thread to obtain the information they need.
essentially - "Round up all 11,000 manual conversion threads, consoidate any relevant info and post a solution." ... except instead of posting a solution in the 11,001 st thread, it'd get posted on the wiki, so noone had to go through 11,001 threads in order to find the 1 with all the information in it
in either case, I'm not particularly fussed, just drawing on how handy the aforementioned link has been from my experience.
Are we talking about the same thing?
We need the brain slugs from Futurama!
I agree stocky, i have just installed my software and have ran into problems already all this info in an easy to find place would be handier!
The idea is, threads should be deleted. There is no point have 3 threads with 100replys and 3 bits of useful information.
The three threads should be consolated and then have the rest of the "chat" ****ed off.
I forsee the wiki being abused. Its hard enough to moderate this let alone another "site" altogether.
Yes its a good idea if its followed, which it wont be, and it will fail. I can jsut see it is all.
I like wiki's, so long as they are used correctly.

Just in response to this first. When we do merge topics and remove all the chit chat we get abused by pm etc saying how their comment that was useless was helpful etc. So it leaves us in a catch 22. I am sure the original writer of a good thread likes to read thanks for the work put into it.
This being said, I would love nothing more than to have an Index page in each sub category that links to relevant threads, would involve a crap load of work, but at the same time would be so much tidier.
As for a ECU Tuning section, perhaps we could make a child forum of the Holden Commodore How to section?

Tuning section is a sweet idea. I am sick to death of threads like this:
DO THESE CHIPS REALLY WORK, I WAS THINKING OF GETTING ONE FOR MY VN BEFORE I GET EXTRACTORS, EXHAUST, SHIFT KIT, CAI, OR EVEN FRONT SEATS!
*egay link to one of those dodgy chips from the UK*
Seriously though, a tuning section would be sweet. Foamy and Bob would own.
