    Default Prepping body panels questions

Iv got some sideskirts and stuff that i want to prep so a family friend can paint for me.

Done some googling and there is a lot of info on how to prep, but im a bit overwhelmed by all the information.

Basically i want a shopping list of what to buy. What grit sandpaper should i buy, along with bog and primers? and maybe a simple step by step how to.

any help would be greatly appreciated

    1. plasti-prime
    2. hi-fill
    3. bar filler (if it has little dents and scratches in it)
    4. prepsol
    5. cheap crap "export" can of matte black
    6. scotchbrite
    7. 120
    8. 400
    9. 800

al of it depends though. will be be rubbing off the old paint? or scuffing it up and going over it. will it need a lot of filler to fix the dents/gouges or is it in great nick?

    how i would do it:

step one, whizzy the whole thing off with 120, slap on loads of bar filler, 36 sand to get the shape right, 120 sand to get rid of the scratches, 400 sand to get rid of the 120 scratches, hit it with flexi prime, then hit it with hi-fill. leave it for a while (couple of days) then sprinkle matte black on it, block back with 800 then get buddy-buddy to paint it while you have a beer.

Awesome, exactly the reply im looking for!!!

    Some questions for you
    3. Bar filler <- thats what people usually call bog or whatever right?
    4. Prepsol <-thats pretty much the prep wash stuff?
    6. Scotchbrite <-whats this used for?

Also what do you mean by "36 sand to get the shape right" is that the grade of sandpaper?

Just to make sure i got it right
    Sand with 120
    Put on filler
36 sand to get the shape right (dont know what you mean there with 36 sand)
    120 sand
    400 sand
Put on flexy prime (do I sand after?)
Put on hi fill and wait a few days
Spray on paint and sand back with 800 to smooth perfect finish 

bar filler is like bog but it sets soft, i.e. it is more rubbery when it goes off.

prepsol is prepwash is trisol is wax and grease remover etc etc etc

scotchbrite is what you use to scuff up the paint if you are going over the top of it. it scratches it up so the paint has something to bite into.

36 is a grade of sandpaper

flexi prime shouldnt need sanding, the stuff i have never fully sets so you spray it on then hit it with hi fill really quickly

you must block back hi-fill before painting

ask your mate how to prep it, he will know if he's a spray painter. cause the way ari666 described it sounds like it will be hard, and make your mates job harder.
if the side skirts are brandnew you will only have to scotchbrite using grey, plastic prime and paint. if they're secondhand steps can vary as to what condition they're in. they would have to be fvcked to fill the hole lot with bog

yeah soz OP. i assumed they have the usual gouges out of them from scraping things, like kerbs and driveways.

^^^ what he said is right if they are good.

even if they are fvcked you still dont need to bog the hole thing, you can just wizzy out most scratches and if you cant get them all out just put some bog in and around the scratches, putting bog all over it is way overkill imo
