Just a question.
I know etch primers are designed for use with aluminium etc. However what happens if you use an etch primer that says its for non ferrous metals like the 3m one ETP4003M on for example the body work.
(Im actually just painting some of the alloy parts on the car - like the windscreen wiper arm). But just wondered what it would do on the mild steel. i.e does it stick properly or cause any problems?
Yes adhesion will be fine so long as your putting it onto bare metal (Not filler or over painted surfaces) the acid needs to react and in effect be "used up" when it comes into contact with metal. While it might work when sprayed on other surfaces you also run the risk of it not working or causing other issues in the long term.
I am doing an old falcon at the moment and am using a specific paint system that the company I work for sells. First coat of primer is etch, after that it is a polyurethane hifill.
Most of the big truck refinishing companies use this stuff.
Why not slap some Australian export on the wipers..
For my wipers, I took them (whole assembly) off, wiped down with Prepsol and gave them 3 coats of Gloss Black.. Didn't worry about any primer and it worked fine..
