hey guys i have heard about 2k paints and they should only be used by pros with proper booths im wondering what the danger would be spraying in a back yard whats the chances of getting cancer from breathing in the fumes while painting and kicking up over spray years down the track or even while mowing the lawn?
im thinking about spraying i have used 2k once before but s****** my self about using it again could i get away with using epoxy enamel?
If you can get the non-isocyanate 2k paint, it would be a lot safer. Also, always wear a proper face mask designed for spray painting.
Also massive fines if you get caught.

lol just the scent creeps over the fence "ahh hes at it again"
I'd be more worried about getting stuff on the wet paint, like leaves, dirt and whatever else, it is a car your talking about right?
Actually lucky mine do... years ago... just the hi fill rub down in the water flowed under the fence, killed his lemon tree, 1/2 the veggie patch and another ornamental tree he had.. we have fixed the problem since but don't kid yourself the stuff is deadly whether in the air or on the ground.... aside from maybe getting cancer there is the asthma, dermatitis and other problems that are sure to come... trust me.

It's not only breathing the crap that hurts you. Isocynates are also absorbed through your skin into the blood stream. The problems don't start straight away, but 10-15 years down the track when your diagnosed with EMCPD( emphysema ) when your a non smoker, you'll know exactly what the cause is. Motospray make an excellent ISO-FREE 2K, which is no more hazardous than acrylic. Plus the added bonus is you can apply their ISO-FREE clear directly over acrylic base coat.
Is the ISO-FREE 2K as good as the 2K with isocynates in it? Like same finished product but with a similar MSDS as acrylic paint? Where do u buy Motospray paint from?
Also...I guess whats the price difference between iso-free 2k and acrylic?

ISO-FREE 2K gives just as good finish as your normal 2K. Just do a google search to see who's the closest to you.
Made some calls to paint shops today searching for some iso-free 2k, found some think it was 120 more than acrylic for 4 litres. I also found out that there is no iso-free 2k clear coat. Which to me, kind of defeats the purpose...so acrylic it is then.
I like safe. Some people wear dust masks when they're sanding stuff...some people don't...some people wear safety glasses when angle grinding...some people don't...I'm a safety kinda guy. Got kids n stuff too so really...if its toxic nasty poison...I can't use it.
There definitely IS an iso-free 2k clear, I use it all the time it's made by Hi-Chem Paints in melbourne. And it's not that much more expensive than acrylic. Also you can use an acrylic base coat and then the iso-free 2K clear over that. Go to HiChem, MOTOSPRAY automotive refinishing paints and associated products and you'll find your closest retailer. If not PM me and I'll give you details of how to contact their Sales Rep.
Hmmm. That sends me back to the drawing board a little. I was looking very closely at doing an acrylic gloss black and a pearl or flake in the clear and lots of clear over that. I have a mate with all the hardware, i think he bought a 300 dollar spray gun, and has a cheap one for primer he's had plenty of experience spraying acrylic. He reckons acrylic is just a lot more forgiving if u stuff something up and have to sand and go again sort of thing.
Also to consider is the fact that while 2k is better and lasts longer before fading and stuff...the chances of having a 2k paint job staying unscratched long enough to outlast an acrylic's lifespan are slim to fk all.
There is the price difference to consider/work out. I made some calls the other day to a paint joint in salisbury qouted me around 450 for a group 3 colour clear and primer 4 litres of each and 20l thinners. If i went black it would be even cheaper. All acrylic.
For my whole car.. (outside only + inside bonnet ) $70 4l untinted white acrylic. $25 250ml green pearl. $100 4l clear acrylic. $60 20l GP thinner. $30 wet&dry sandpaper. $5 2 rolls masking tape.
Total $290 for full external respray in white pearl, totalling about 10 coats. You can double the price of the base coat for black, still cheap.
Of course you can just go a black with no clear too, which will save some cash, but pearl then clear over black looks wicked, black shows pearl stronger.
I chose white to save doing the inside of engine bay, doors, etc, but the same quantities would do those too, just a couple less coats.
The paint is less hard wearing (still pretty tough though) but either way I will have scratched and dented it a million times in 5 years anyway, its what I do best
2pak is toxic. If you can afford to pay a pro to spray it, its a better paint and you wont have to breathe it or suck it in through your pores. Let the pro take his chances. If you want to paint at home, acrylic is the go.. just my opinion.

I was actually tossed up between white and black myself. The ute is already in white and to change colour after looking at it i think i could manage to leave the dash in rip the rest of the interior out not sure about whether the glass would come out but doors off, headlights and tail lights off. Im thinking of a black with a pearl or flaked clear, and then lots of clear on top of that. But the inside of the tub probably wont worry about the pearl or flake, just primer black and clear, i have a tub liner anyway so never gonna see it. The under the bonnet bit perplexed me...I dont really wanna take the engine out. Maybe i could just paint it black with brushes or something lol I dunno yet.
Sand and re-paint the rims silver...
I dont dislike white...but i just reckon if im gonna put in the effort of spraying it it might as well be with a colour i will be reeeally happy with. I've never really seen a pearled or flaked white i liked.
I should look more closely at pearls over black really I was looking at flake but most people use shitloads of flake and blockout the black behind it...I want something more subtle than a disco ball for a car...So either...a little bit of purple blue and black flake or some pearl maybe.
Pearl is much more noticable on black. You can adjust how much pearl you put over it of course. If you add a lot, then the pearl starts to dominate. If you only add a little, just a dusting over the car, then you get little sparklies instead. This randomly searched google image is purple pearl over black base. I think I would have used much less pearl personally, because the pearl on this car is taking over, but it will give you an idea.

daksters ... where did u paint it ?? in a booth ?? have you got any progress pics or before and after ?
Stroker ... fun or work ... Both can be done Sideways !!!

In an open carport .. its just acrylic but the project has kinda stalled at the moment while I keep changing my mind lol
Theres a few pics of different pearl and metallic effects I was playing with in my ride thread, plenty of before and afters. Tomorrow I'll be posting a bonnet I painted today in acrylic on my back patio after stripping back to metal with paint stripper. Its in Masai Red, a metallic burgundy type colour on a VR Acclaim.
Isocyanate paints contain cyanide, which apart from being poisonous to breathe, can even be absorbed through your skin. Plenty of people in here paint with it in their sheds, and get great results, but I get good results with acrylic, no safety equipment, and no fear of cyanide poisoning.
I havent tried ISO Free 2K, I might give some of that a go sometime soon.
Hey Daks, I use ISO Free clear all the time. It goes one nice and easy, flows out well, has exceptional gloss straight off the gun and doesn't kill you dead as a dodo.
Cool mate, I will definitely give it a go. I've never argued that acrylic is better than 2k, my argument has always been that acrylic is better for the DIY sprayer.. I find it easy to use and at least it wont poison me (as much! ) as an ISO 2k.
Acrylic is incredibly fast drying too, better if you are painting in an open space as I do... less chance of crap getting into it.
ISO Free 2k skins after about 5 minutes and is hard enough to handle after about an hour, re-assemble after 24 hours and full hardness in 7 days air drying. Blew over my plenum cover today. 14 degrees and wind as fk, crap blowing around everywhere. As you can see good gloss and no debri.
