Hello all,
I'm fixing up some of the body work on my skyline and I'm going to spray the front/rear bars, plastic door strips and the number plate garnish blllaacckkk.
I have a new compressor though its fairly poor, I'll be able to deal with it for a job this small (2.5hp 45L tank)
I know I would need a top feed gun, would the normal supercheap job do ok? What does everyone use?
I was thinking something like this?
SCA Air Spray Gun - Gravity Feed, 600ml - Supercheap Auto Australia
Can anyone suggest something else?
Could I get away with using a bottom feed gun? Not sure what the advantage is using a top feed, but that is all I see people use
SCA Air Spray Gun - Siphon Feed , 1000ml - Supercheap Auto Australia

Thanks.

gravity feed - get away with a shitty compressor
siphon feed - cannot get away with a shitty compressor
Buy the best you can afford. Dont buy one from
Supercheap, they're rubbish. You wouldn't put sound4 speakers and a cassette deck on a SQ car- would you.

Very true, thanks for the help. Can anyone suggest good shops / online places to get a decent spray gun?

go to a specialist automotive paint shop they will have a wealth of knolledge and advice for you also they usually sell quality guns thats where i bought my gravity fed gun from but stay away from supacheap guns you get what you pay for..
I got my gun from total tools and I was impressed with it its a gravity fed gun as I only have a compresser the same size as yours.
Ari666 got one of these I think, DEVILBISS SGK 600 1.4 Gravity Spray Gun HVLP paint shop | eBay , and he loves it apparently, got his Impala looking pretty neat. Send him a PM to make sure its the right model. It requires a fair amount of air though, so maybe think about getting a secondary air tank and fitting it up to your compressor, give you longer before you run out of air, though it will take longer to fill back up.

If I'm honest I'll probably end up buying a pretty cheap gun, I'm not willing to spend $200 even though I understand that is still cheap for a spray gun. The car I'm spraying is mainly used for track / drifting, chances are I'll end up ripping the front bar off after I spray it haha. I'll probably go a cheap gravity feed gun and hope for the best, It will still come out better than $2 rattle cans. I'll post up results of what I end up getting for those interested.

meh, the supercheap auto gravity fed gunds are fine. takes a bit more work to get paint to come out right, but they do the job. that devilbliss gun arcamody linked is insanely good vlaue. that gun does most of the work for you. its a pleasure using it.
wouldnt know about suction guns, never used one.
Thanks for the reply ari. I'm getting this gun New Detail Paint Spray Gravity Feed Gun .. Like I said before, if this gun is so rubbish you can't use it, doesn't really matter, I'll probably end up hurting the front / rear bars again anyway haha. But with a bit of luck it will come out better than the faded grey it was before.

Man that's way too good, if you can do that the supercheap gravity gun (which seems pretty similar to the one i'll buy) then i'm more than happy.

I have also been looking for a cheap HVLP and found this gun. How does it spray? Do all the adjustments work well etc? Does it come with a 1.4mm needle/tip?
I couldn't justify spending heaps on a spray gun when it is possible to get a pretty good finish from a cheap HVLP gun.
Pretty much is it just cheap crap or is it good quality for the money?
Thanks, Jeza
HVLP needs lots of air. Dont do it unless you want to buy a top notch compressor.
You've said you just want a basic gun and you arent after a fantastic job so why spend a lot of money?
The spray guns in the SCA $50 airtool multipacks are a waste of time, dont buy one of those kits.
I use the cheapest suction feed gun they have thats not in a kit - it was about $60, sprayed ok pretty much straight out of the box.. had diagrams of what each knob does and how to adjust them even just in case you havent used a gun before. I am using that to apply a quality pearl paint job on my car. The compressor is a crappy little 20L SCA one too, but trust me my paint is turning out rather well
Sure a more expensive gun makes life easier and will do a better job, but for your purposes do you really want to spend a lot of cash? You can get a perfect job with a brush if you want to do enough sanding.. the cheap stuff will be fine for what you need.
I have one of these:
WTD Pro Gravity Spray Gun with fan adjust.
I cant fault it, I can get a good finish with it and Im shit #### at spraying. My brother can get a really nice finish using it, and hes slightly better then me at spraying (hes done it twice haha).
so what sized nozzle does everyone use to spray a standard grade metallic acrylic paint?
VN Calais With All The Factory Fruit I Need!
Star Professional Spray Equipment
Is my choice of gun. Gravity guns get into door jams easier and you have less hitting the job with the pot.
Go a 2mm tip for acrylic the first supercheap gun listed we have 1 and compared to my gun throw it in the bin.
hvlp guns use a lot of air as long as you have an 8 to 10 cfm comp itll be right.
Hey mate you can get a decent one from VG Auto Paints
