    Default welding tiedowns

so after a very good search on the forum and on the google machine, i have turned up with a few answers but not exactly what i needed. i am wanting to weld a few of the tie down hooks back onto my rails (to put a cover and to tie stuff down when hauling) but in a different way from the original so that you really cant see them. but what i want to know is can i weld them on without ruining the paint on the outer side of the rail. i dont care about the inside, and im not fussed if the paint changes in colour a bit, but if it completely ruins it then ill look at something else. also planning on using a gassless mig off a mate.

well if you are asking if itll burn the paint, yes yes it will. if you weld in the inside, then the outside will get burned. the idea of welding is to mix two metals together. so the whole area needs to be cherry red hot and at the melting point. i think (but dont know for a fact) that paint's melting point is significantly lower than steels melting point.

(lol, that was a joke btw)

If the paint is directly on the other side of what youre welding, the paint will melt and bubble and go brown. Look shit. And gassless mig is also shit.

Why not get a hardcover, and put something like these in the tray?

Itll look a lot better, and be as functional..

round up a bit of scrap ie old guard or door and run a few welds on it and see how the welder burns paint off.

Thanks for the responses so far. now for info.

The paint is not directly on the other side, im welding onto an existing peice that it about 5mm thick.

Hard covers are very expensive for new ones and kinda unnecessary for me as i will be getting a sports bar which means i need a special hard cover = more money, plus with tools and other big objects the lid has to be up.

The welds are not going to be long continuous welds but more of an extended tack weld.

Hopefully this gives you guys some better info to go off.

could you maybe drill holes. and nut/washer the bits down?

ive also seen some "roll up" tonneaus that are solid but kinda wierd, might work? (imagine ford ranger style)

bolting them on won't work unfortunatly, already had a think of that. i have seen those roll up tonneaus but arent really keen on the idea.
but today a mate of mine showed me his navara ute, and it had a really good cover on it that had brackets that bolt on the inside of the tray and the cover has clips on it to hold on to the brackets, think ill do a bit of research on that style as it means no welding.

You mean almost exactly the same style VKCOMMO pointed out?

VKC suggested a hard lid/ tubliner which is not what im after, this type of design is much like the style of cover the VU utes use. it has a long bracket that runs the length of the side and then the cover stretches over it and clips on.

have you looked into maybe getting a vu style soft cover?
with the clip in rail things down the sides.
have these where the old hooks would have been. so it blends in.

if a soft cover from another model doesnt fit im sure an auto trimmer (uphosterer) could modify it.

mate i reckon the nutsert would be a winner. youll be sorry if you try and weld something. especially something as thin as panel steel and clips.

    with a gasless mig

    and your first time welding?

i have done a few other welds but they were with an inverter stick welder which is completely different.
im gonna do some more research and ill get back to you. but i do really like the VU style cover but no one makes it for VS, but as drawnnite said i could get it modified by an auto trimmer.
