Hey guys, I bought my vx about a year ago with something of a horrible paint job..
it seems to have a layer of clear coat from a spray can over the top of the factory paint job, not sure what the previous owner was going for but it has a horrible rough feel to it and doesn't look any good.
the factory paint has a clear coat already and I have thought about cut and polishing the whole car like my bonnet I did a few weeks ago. got rid of it alright but took forever is there any other way to remove the spray can layer before I restore the underneath?
Rub it back with 2000 grit until its smooth as a babies bum, then polish it with a buffer. Sorry, no, there is no easy way. Hopefully it really is just a crap final coat, you said the bonnet came out ok?
What do you mean restore underneath? Is there damage under the lumpy clear? If not, then all you have to do is rub off the rough surface and polish it, as above. If you are going to be touching up the paint in some way, you dont want to be putting polish on it though, its just going to have to come off again.
ahhh yeah, wet and dry im guessing?
yeah the bonnet came out just ok but underneath is large circular scratching so i may have to cut it back further..
the factory paint job already has a clear coat i'm just getting rid of the coat the guy has put over that again. so once i do a full cut and polish underneath the rough coat do i just seal it with polish and wax?
You need to rub it back with 2000 grit (wet) for a long time. Small circular motions, just keep going. Eventually, you'll have a dead flat finish, with no shine at all, or scratches.
You want to be cutting into the original clear coat (to remove the scratches) without actually going through it.
Then use your basic Kitten #2 cut and polish ( rejuvenator for older cars .. NOT dedicated cutting compound which is more abrasive and will just put the scratches back in for you ) and buff it till it gleams.
Since thats a cut and polish (wax built in), thats it. No more polish or wax required.
Just be careful you dont sand or buff away the original clear, or you will have a spot with base coat with no clear (which will look like a completely different colour than the rest of the car).
If you do go too far, you'll need to clean with prepsol and spray some clear over that patch and rub it flat again, without rubbing it off, then cut and polish again.
